Perfect shoes, but a bit too high. Risk it or not?

I have just taken delivery of some new shoes which are absolutely perfect for an outfit I'm planning on wearing to a wedding on Saturday, but... the heel is seriously high. I've just measured it and it's 5.5 inches, with a 1 inch platform at the front. I've been wearing them round the house for a little while and they are comfortable, and I've not fallen over yet, but I really can't decide whether to risk it or not. I don't want to look like one of those TOWIE wannabes who can't walk in their heels, and I can't work out if I'm walking oddly in them or not.
I'm also going to the wedding with DD1 who is a pre-schooler and dd2 who is nearly 1 and I will be carrying for at least some of it. WWYD? Is 4 days enough time to practice walking in them so I don't look like an idiot or fall over? Or should I just go and buy some more boring, sensible shoes with a slightly lower heel?

Do you know what the wedding format is? IME weddings tend to involve 2-3 hours of standing around in between the ceremony and the meal, which could really kill your feet in 5.5 inch heels. (I speak from experience!) Soo, it's not really the walking that's the issue, it's more the standing around. Especially if you are holding a little one.

Being honest I would probably get something else ... sorry.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 02/07/2012 16:17

How about taking some fold up flats with you as a back up?

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/07/2012 16:57

Can you post a link before we decide if it's Gypsy wedding or not?

HipHopOpotomus · 02/07/2012 17:53

Nothing ruins a beautifully dressed woman faster than a "toddle" walk in too high shoes. If you can pull it off go for it, otherwise something less high that you can walk elegantly in all day will be much more "perfect".

PrincessOfChina · 02/07/2012 17:57

I think it's too high. But I struggle with the now ubiquitous 4" heels. I found a lovely pair of nude heels with a 3" heel at the weekend and they seem low!

I do usually take flip-flops or ballet flats to weddings as a back up, especially if we have to take DD.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 02/07/2012 18:00

mmm, but 5 1/2 inch with a 1 inch platform puts the foot in the same position as a 4 1/2 inch shoe without a platform.

If your not sure then don't do it.

I'd love a link - but just 'cause I'm a nosy old bint.

chaosisawayoflife · 02/07/2012 18:31

Ok, I'll post a link in the knowledge that they won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I love them! They are these and I am wearing a simple, just above the knee, Jersey wrap dress in the same bright orangey red as the flower, and possibly a soft silky navy blazer if it is chilly.

Hecky thump, they're fab Grin

With a chunky heel like that 4 days should be fine to get to grips with them.

minipie · 02/07/2012 18:36

Hmm, they look fairly comfy actually for super high heels. I have a super high platform pair and they are surprisingly some of the comfiest heels I own, because of the rest of the design.

How wide are they - is there plenty of space for your feet to spread during the day? And how much padding is there under the ball of your foot? That's the area that really kills after ages standing.

One other thing... will it be warm enough to go tightless... as peeptoes don't really work with tights. (I have tried the toeless ones, they are rubbish).

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 02/07/2012 18:38

yeah, those gel pad things you put under the ball of your foot might be worth a go.

UnfortunatelyNotAMummy · 02/07/2012 18:53

They're lovely. I'd chance it. There's plenty of time to sit down later and they look comfortable.

chaosisawayoflife · 02/07/2012 20:30

Thanks all. I had a very depressing trip into town earlier to see what other navy shoes I could find. They were all crap and I've come to the conclusion that it's these or nothing, I won't be happy with any compromise. DH has seen them, and although he is a proper man's man and not in the slightest bit interested in clothes or shoes, he loves them and thinks I should go for it. I've practiced walking a bit more and apparently I look normal! So...I think I'm going to keep them!
Now, I need jewellery. I did see this necklace in Accessorize earlier, which is nice. Has anyone seen anything better? I'm thinking statement necklace, with blue/navy stones, and simple earrings. My dress is quite simple and low cut so I think I need something at my neck.

Excellent. I wouldn't compromise if I had those shoes waiting for me. No way!

Could you link to the dress?

maybe?

chaosisawayoflife · 02/07/2012 21:10

Dress is this one. Yes, the £1.99 dress! It is more orangey red than scarlett red. I've agonised for ages about what to wear for this wedding. Am still bfing 1 year old DD2, and really struggled to find a bfing friendly outfit that I liked. Then I went through my wardrobe, found this, and though, sod it. I love it, it's flattering, comfortable and easy to bf in. And with fab shoes....

Sorry, I should have said thank you for the links. It's a bit late to risk online shopping now, but I'm going to pop into HOF today to see if they have an east concession. Some lovely ones there.

Love the shoes and I think they will look fab with THE dress which I also have but did not think of upgrading with statement accessories Grin

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 03/07/2012 14:10

Yeah, genius plan to dress it up like that Grin

chaosisawayoflife · 03/07/2012 18:52

Not sure about genius plan, more desperation for something, anything to wear!! Still wondering about accessorising. Not sure now if blue/navy jewellery might be a bit 'matchy matchy'? Neckline is a deep v, so any ideas on necklace, bracelet, earrings, hair bits etc etc? Don't want to over do it but don't want to look dressed down either (not sure if that's possible in those shoes!). Thanks in advance.

OP posts:
ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 03/07/2012 19:16

Mm, matchy match not good. no. But I'm not really sure what you're wearing so can't say if it would be with blue necklace or not. So, many questions follow...

What colour is your bag?
The navy blazer - is that a definite or a maybe?
Would you stick on a navy shawl/scarf/wrap/cardy thing if you didn't wear it?
Are you wearing any sort of headgear/hair decoration?
Tights?
Earrings/Bangles/broach?

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 03/07/2012 19:17

aaaaand, could you maybe stick up an ingognito photo of self in the clobber and shoes ?

cerealqueen · 03/07/2012 19:28

have you some long beads which you can knot at the front? I would not match too much though. Shoes look great and I'll be fine due to platform!

chaosisawayoflife · 03/07/2012 19:35

Thanks procrastination
In answer:
The way the weather is, I think navy blazer is a definite. Certainly some sort of navy cover up anyway.
Bag is a giant tan affair crammed with nappies, changes of clothes, snacks etc which will mostly be hung from the buggy.
No head gear planned, but not averse to it. I have bra length dark blonde straight hair.
No tights.
Earrings will probably be simple diamond studs if I'm doing big necklace. No plans on bangles or brooch but am open to them.
Budget is small, say up to £40 in total for accessories but pref less.
May get brave and do pic tomorrow, but I am pj'd up now.

OP posts:
chaosisawayoflife · 03/07/2012 19:41

Oh, and if it helps I'm 5'3 (5'8 in the heels!), size 10-12, b-c cup, slight spare tyre round the middle but will be wearing spanx to combat that, and bfing a fiddly little girl so necklaces can't be too expensive or delicate as they are likely to get yanked.

OP posts:
ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 03/07/2012 19:51

Excellent. thanks. You need a 3rd colour. Am ruminating...

minipie · 03/07/2012 19:52

With navy and orangey red, the third colour should be turquoise, gold, or nude/pale tan.
