Welly Advice. Hunters or Joules?

I have decided the time has come to buy some decent wellies. Today I have seen both Hunters and the Joules Premium ones. There is a big difference in price, but will I really notice the difference? When I asked in the shop they said the only difference was in the length of the guarantee. I know they aren't really stylish or beautiful, but I could do with some help.TIA

My hunters a few years old and I LOVE them. They are still in perfect nick and I wear them at any opportunity! They are the Regent riding boot style ? narrow top and more fitted so more flattering I think.

Incapinka · 10/06/2012 21:03

Another vote for Le chameau if you want hardcore Welles. Had mine 12 years and been used a lot. Still in immaculate condition even though they have been abused

BetterOnACamel · 10/06/2012 21:03

I only do (poncey) little dog walks so not judge of hard wearing wellies - but dear god do I love my Hunters! Happily go walk dog in pissing rain in these babies link

Hunters.

I bought some neoprene lined ones - green with purple lining back last September. I have worn them nearly every day since for at least an hour a day and they are still perfect and I didnt have cold feet once all winter.

They are expensive but so comfy and worth every penny to me.

Maywills you seem to be advertising on here ...

Or splash out and go for leather wellies. Le Chameau, Hunter, Barbour, Sherwood Forest, Toggis. You simply cannot go wrong with leather boots. Warm, waterproof, much more comfortable than rubber. Will never go back to rubber wellies.

I too have heard that recent Hunter wellies are much more mass produced for the fashionable market and are shit compared to what they used to be. Same with Joules, they're just fashion wear. I don't think they'd stand up to working outside all day throughout the winter. I don't think they're really intended to.

threebee · 22/11/2013 21:21

I had Joules wellies, sent first pair back when one boot split open after a few months (wet feet!) and the replacement pair did the same. Have had my Hunters now for the same amount of time and no signs of wear or tear.

Em2010 · 22/11/2013 23:17

Reading with interest! All my pretty wellies kept splitting. I've never had Hunters but had some lovely Joules ones a few years back which lasted a bit better than the supermarket cheapies but I reluctantly had to bin them eventually. That was 18 months ago and as an interim measure I nicked dh's £10 home base wellies (he has v. small feet!) Homebase wellies are still going strong and I still haven't got around to buying myself anymore!

VivaLeBeaver · 22/11/2013 23:24

Dunlops. Had mine for years. They keep getting shorter as the dog keeps chewing them but never leaked.

Hunters have leaked with me. I've had two pairs of Joules and both leaked with a few weeks.

frazzeled · 22/11/2013 23:30

Depends how much you use them - I dog walk twice daily in quite muddy/off road walks. Jules willies lasted about a month, hunters two so wouldn't recommend either. Now have le chemeau ones which I picked up for about £50 on amazon - have now lasted four years of battering and look as good as new. Joules ones do however look good it literally to do school run from car in - not good for much else!

frazzeled · 22/11/2013 23:31

Plus are really comfy! I walk miles in them.

Mumof22222boys · 22/11/2013 23:37

My mum died 18 years ago and I inherited her hunters. Still wear them now and they are great. Not exactly heavy use mind you. Hope that's not too morbid!

HotCrossBunsForAll · 23/11/2013 09:16

TK Maxx near me had black Hunters last weekend for £54.

I have some Joules wellies, and some that cost me £9 from asda. The asda ones are brilliant, the Joules ones OK, but all the lining has come away from the boot.

lizzg007 · 29/12/2013 20:07

DO NOT BUY HUNTERS!!! I have worn Hunters for years and thought they were great as they last years. Unfortunately my last pair barely lasted 6 months before the rubber started to get cracks in and wet feet! Apparently they now sub their work abroad and not made in Edinburgh anymore and are certainly substandard. If you complain to Hunters they tell you they are guaranteed for a year but refuse to replace them. They offered me 25% of a new pair!! Too expensive to only last 6 months so don't bother unless they start to manufacture in the old way. Bad customer service.

Mummy22gr8kids · 04/02/2014 21:26

DO NOT BUY JOULES. I bought mine less than a month agao and both boots have split. I am unable to get a response from Joules and dont think I will manage to get a refund. They may be stylish but seem to be rubbish quality.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 04/02/2014 21:31

I need some Welles for school trip to battlefields. Trouble is I have high instep, small feet and fat calves. And not much money. Cheapies I either can't get on or don't fit around my fat legs. Help!

PartyConfused · 04/02/2014 21:35

What size are you OP? Hunters do 'kids sizes' up to a size 5. On amazon they are around £30. Haven't actually justified it to myself yet...still seems a lot.

Eastpoint · 04/02/2014 22:14

Hunters do two different styles, one is for a more womanly calf (like yours Ohwhatfuckery). Perhaps you'll be able to find some on eBay?

clareknights · 15/02/2014 12:09

Don't buy the Joules ones! My Joules wellies are just over one year old and the rubber has cracked so they let in water. Joules won't replace them as they are only guaranteed for one year. I would expect a much longer life from such expensive boots. Probably best to spend much less. I have an old pair of bog standard rubber wellies (Dunlop?) that used to belong to my granny, and which are still going after at least 10 years with me.

Floralnomad · 15/02/2014 12:15

Aigle are much better than either ,but google country boots ,slightly different to wellies but more stylish and very durable .

Eastpoint · 15/02/2014 12:26

Clare the short Joules boots split too, my friend had two pairs go. The first pair they replaced very happily but she didn't bother to send the second pair back as they weren't worth having.

AwkwardSquad · 15/02/2014 15:23

Such a shame about Hunters. My pair cost about £18 from a farming goods store 14 years ago, and are still going strong.

I'd still go to a farming store and see what they've got. Should be sturdy, though possibly not pretty!

crashbangboom · 15/02/2014 15:31

I brought some jileon wellies for my fat calves. Worn once.

Wellibobs I've had years. Obviuosly quality has gone down recently.

SnowBells · 15/02/2014 16:10

I have non-traditional Diesel ones. Worn them alms every day - comfortable and don't age much. The color is actually in the rubber. So no 'color chipping off' malarkey...
