please give me your Coconut Oil tips! What can I use it for?

I've kept this out of date tub of coconut oil in the fridge for about 2 years - used to cook with it but kind of forgot about it, and because it was quite expensive I never chucked it out! It's past the "best by" date so I won't use it for cooking now, although it looks, smells and feels how it always did .... but I am fine about using it on my body!

What can it be used for other than hair conditioner and moisturiser? I have a load to use up!!

I use mine all over. I use it as a hair conditioner, body lotion and moisturiser for my face.

valiumredhead · 06/06/2012 12:26

Hair
skin
cuticles
rough heels/elbows

Someone, on another thread, used it as a face cleanser - I haven't tried it and I'm not sure how to do it but could be worth a go?

NigellasGuest · 06/06/2012 13:41

that's interesting - not sure how it would work as a face cleanser - maybe just rub it in and rinse off. But then presumably you wouldn't need a moisturiser?

Rub it in and take off with a warm muslin cloth.

I have been using it as a leave in conditioner overnight once a week, and putting it on my feet then socks as often as I remember. I might start using it as a face cleanser, am getting fed up with the smell of olive oil.

Vaguely remembering that non-mineral oils can be used as a leather feed I think. How about neglected shoes?

MissFoodie · 07/06/2012 10:32

you can also use coconut oil to make amazing flapjacks/granola Grin

NigellasGuest · 07/06/2012 11:03

thank you all!
I'm reporting back after some coconut oil use.

Worked a treat as a cleanser last night with a hot cloth (I have the Liz Earle muslins) - even mascara came off fine. this morning I went over my face with some Liz Earle toner on some cotton wool just to see if anything had been left behind after cleansing last night. The cotton wool was absolutely clean so the coconut oil obviously had done an excellent job!

Have been also applying a small amount of oil to moisturise my face - i love the feel of it, it's lovely and light and my face feels moisturised. However, I'm worried that it might start blocking my pores - has anyone found this?

I used a tiny amount to condition my (straight, thick but fine IYSWIM) hair after washing this morning. This is not such a great result. It has left my hair looking oily and somewhat unwashed. A shame, because it would be great not to spend ££ on conditioners. Perhaps it works better on more wiry hair?

I put it on me tits Grin

Seriously, it is SO good. You do end up looking slightly like you've been greased up for some super-dodgy wrestling match, but I notice if I stop using it.

I did start using it on my hair but didn't notice that it made that much of a difference, but then my hair isn't particularly dry. I know lots of people with afro hair swear by it.

MistyRocks · 07/06/2012 11:18

its amazing

use as a cleanser, slather it on then take it off with a hot wrung out cloth. you will be amazed at the dirt that comes off ( Blush )

use it as a moisturiser (face and body)

overnight as a hair conditioning treatment then wash it off in the morning

i have read on here it is non-pore blocking so afaik fine to use as a face moisturiser

i use the pink sun extra virgin stuff, i buy it on ebay

MrsWindsor · 07/06/2012 11:48

I have some of this! Will try to cleansing tonight, sounds good

I use the pretty expensive Pureology hair range, but once a week I put coconut oil in my hair, leave it in overnight, wash it out with Aussie Moisture Macadamia Nut shampoo, and my hair feels great. I can't use the coco oil more than that on my hair or it will go lank, but great as a 1/week pamper.

jodie do you have....erm...dry flakey nipples??

NigellasGuest · 07/06/2012 13:16

MissFoodie I am LOVING that Yum blog! Am now tempted by coconut oil with a hint of rose in it....

OP posts:
NigellasGuest · 07/06/2012 13:19

re. the hair, perhaps I should shampoo the coconut oil out after conditioning with it, rather than just rinsing.

I'm feeling disturbed because my main goal was to use up this old tub of coconut oil that's been lurking at the back of my fridge since my last healthy phase (quite a long time back)! and in the process save ££££ by not purchasing cleanser, conditioner etc etc. However, now I've looked at the Yum blog I'm considering spending more £££££ Shock

glad you like :)
yes, I would leave coconut oil in overnight, then shampoo out in the morning
you don't have to spend a fortune to get good quality products without cr*p in them, have loads more, just not enough time.....

MissFoodie · 07/06/2012 14:43

btw you could survive on very little, eg coconut oil, jojoba oil and a water based serum...but we all love the thought of a miracle cream, eye cream, etc.....!

JodieHarshHasALumpyPennie · 07/06/2012 15:08

Nilbyname my nipples are delightfully smooth and dewy, thank you Grin

But I feel, perhaps wrongly, that feeding the skin in some way might help prevent the fearsome Barmaid's Chest.

LemonTurd · 07/06/2012 16:06

JodieHarsh What's a Barmaid's Chest?

I once put coconut oil on my hair before I went to bed. When I woke up it smelled really bad! Has anyone else had this? I'd like to try it again, so maybe I'll just leave it on for a few hours during the day.
