Should I get a short pixie cut?

I currently have long-ish hair, which is all one length, with a short blunt fringe. I blow dry and straighten it every day, then put it in a pony tail, partially because I have to for work, partially because I'd have to straighten it for even longer not to.

I've started to wonder about having a short pixie cut, kindof like Winona Ryder, Mia Farrow etc. I'd love to have more of a hairstyle, but obviously worry that I won't like it.

I'm in my early 30s and have relatively thick fast-growing hair.

Do it! I had my waist-length hair pixie-ed about five years ago and I've never looked back. Quick wash, quick blowdry, tiny dab of product and I'm good to go. The only downside is that I have to have it cur every five weeks, but that's a small price to pay for the daily convenience and general stylishness.

With a pixie cut, it's not about your hair, it's about your face.

Pics please!

Bluestocking · 02/06/2012 22:53

Or cut even - where did cur come from?!

RecursiveMoon · 02/06/2012 22:53

Winona Ryder

Pics of you, I mean...any on your profile? Off to check!

Okay Grin, I've been reading about this a bit in relation to pixie cuts, I think I have quite fine features. I'm towards the cute / quirky part of the scale rather than the beautiful end.

I'm not 100% sure about my face shape, does anyone have a link descriptions + examples?

I know you meant me Pennie, we cross-posted Grin!

I think you need a small, fine-boned, elegant face, and a longish neck (or at least not a fat stumpy one). You also need to be comparatively slim. Or not-big, at least. Bigger folks (ie me) need plenty of hair to balance them out a bit, and prevent pinhead....

But of course I cannot say for sure without a picture

I am a BIG fan of short hair btw and suggest looking at the Karla's Closet blog for inspiration (her hair is growing out now but look a few pages back and you'll see some lovely styling).

Ooh, how amazing does Natalie Portman look?

I'd say go for it. I had one and I loved it, but my hairline at the back of my neck is not nice and it constantly needed trimmed/tidied; someone with a more normal hairline wouldn't have had that problem. My face was small but quite square jawed (plus slightly plump) and from the front it looked fine!

bigkidsdidit · 02/06/2012 23:06

I did this last month - I had wavy hair to my shoulder blades and k now have a cut like Audrey tatou. I am not exaggerating when I say it has changed my life. I always wore it up in a bun or pony before so having it long was pointless. Now I just wash it, comb and leave, and it always looks good. It is AMAZING

RecursiveMoon · 02/06/2012 23:07

Thanks Pennie, I'll check out that blog.

Hmm, I'm not sure that my face is elegant Grin...

I don't exactly get the benefit of having long hair as I always wear it in a ponytail, so I feel very liberated and excited about the prospect of having very short hair. I like my fringe to be pretty short too, although this would be taking it to a whole new level! Hey, it's fast-growing anyway .

PissyDust · 02/06/2012 23:07

I did it last Easter and haven't looked back although I've started growing it out a bit so it's all mad & curly at the minute.

bigkidsdidit · 02/06/2012 23:08

X posts. I felt like you do and I can't rave about it enough. It is hugely freeing. And also pretty :)

PennieDreadful · 02/06/2012 23:08

You should go for it. I have the face (I think Hmm) but alas, alas, not the frame! Ultimately, it is only hair...

RecursiveMoon · 02/06/2012 23:09

I'm loving the positive stories! Thank you!

That's interesting Nyx, DS has a funny hairline at the back, I wonder if I do as well. I'm just going to bed, so I'll ask DH to check.

I'd love to do this, and I know I'd suit it when I'm at my ideal weight. It is not a great look if you are carrying any extra weight though- you'll just feel mumsy.

daenerysstormborn · 02/06/2012 23:10

i would say yes. i had my hair cut from a chin length bob to quite short in september, not once regretted it.

RecursiveMoon · 02/06/2012 23:11

Pennie, the front of house lady at our hairdressers has a lovely short pixie cut, and she's of slightly larger build. She looks absolutely lovely.

It's only now that I'm noticing all of these lovely Pixie cuts Grin.

Oh, I REALLY wish that dd would have a pixie cut, Emily Watson looks amazing with hers! DD has fine features, a nice jaw line and a lovely neck. She is skinny, and really elfin anyway. She would look AMAZING! But she just won't do it! Kids today have no sense of adventure! Sad

RecursiveMoon · 02/06/2012 23:20

Okay, I might have the face for it, and I have the build and hairline for it Grin.

OP posts:
RecursiveMoon · 02/06/2012 23:23

I agree Saggy, she looks lovely (photo).

Charliefox · 03/06/2012 10:58

No, don't do it. It's ageing. Grow your fringe out and have soft layers put in. Far more flattering.

DialMforMummy · 03/06/2012 11:21

If you have thick growing fast hair like me, be wary of the overgrown mushroom look and be prepared to go to the hairdressers often.
You also need to have a smashing colour for it for and not a big chin.
I wish I could do it but have a big chin...
