Should I get a short pixie cut?

I currently have long-ish hair, which is all one length, with a short blunt fringe. I blow dry and straighten it every day, then put it in a pony tail, partially because I have to for work, partially because I'd have to straighten it for even longer not to.

I've started to wonder about having a short pixie cut, kindof like Winona Ryder, Mia Farrow etc. I'd love to have more of a hairstyle, but obviously worry that I won't like it.

I'm in my early 30s and have relatively thick fast-growing hair.

Hmm... Ageing might be okay, I look pretty young, and quite like the idea of a grown up hairstyle Grin.

The overgrown mushroom look doesn't sound good Sad. That's worrying about the colour as well, I have boring mid-brown hair, so I'm considering having it coloured dark brown... Is thick hair okay when it's cut regularly though?

Oh yes, I don't have much of a chin at all, so hopefully that would be okay?

I was going to start a thread asking the exact same thing. Even took a photo yesterday but not got around to uploading it.
I'm sure the answer will be no because I'm a very long way from slim but working on it!

RecursiveMoon · 03/06/2012 13:20

Tortoise, it's really difficult to decide to do, isn't it?

I've pretty much always had long hair though, and it would grow back if I hated it, so I wonder whether I should just try it. I've tried a few different long hair hairstyles, and think that I've found my mojo at the moment - very blunt cut, similar fringe. I don't like layers on other people or on me - I like very simple, clean lines / styles.

I've added photo to profile if anyone wants to give opinions. Limited time only! Normally slightly shorter, over due a good cutting!

Tortoise · 03/06/2012 13:22

I've always had short hair but not as short as a pixie would be. It is really hard to know what would suit.

RecursiveMoon · 03/06/2012 13:29

Hi Tortoise, I've just been checking out your photos Smile. Isn't your hair pretty pixie-ish in the photo with your lovely kids (I think from a couple of years ago based on the children's ages in the text)? Did you like it then?

Okay, I'll try to be brave later and post a photo. I don't have any on this phone of me, so I'll use DH's phone when he gets back... Please be gentle and tell me that I'd really suit a pixie cut!

Moon Just had a look, and yes I guess it is. Forgot what photos were on there lol.

Bonsoir · 03/06/2012 13:52

NO NO NO. Pixie cuts, aka short hair, is truly unsexy and unattractive on middle aged women.

RecursiveMoon · 03/06/2012 14:01

I'm not quite middle aged yet Grin!

Nor am I!

TheSmallClanger · 03/06/2012 15:53

Well I have very short hair, am 38, and look bloody marvellous. I feel much more confident than when I had a supposedly flattering and age-appropriate bob.

Go for it OP- it grows out really quickly anyway if you don't like it.

cocolepew · 03/06/2012 15:57

I've just grown my hair but have had it short for years, i always go back to it.

I have a face like a chipmunk, nowhere near elegant, but it suits me:)

Dont leave it fluffy though. Style it with wax.

cocolepew · 03/06/2012 16:00

The first picture you linked to isnt short enough to be pixie, but its lovely and a good one to start with if you dont want to go for a really short one straight away.

True fact once you go short you go shorter and shorter each visit to the hairdressers!

WizardofOs · 03/06/2012 16:15

i had a very short pixie cut from mid-teens to late 20's when I started growing it for my wedding. I would be too scared to do it now (knocking on 40) as I am worried it would age me. All the photos of celebs shown here are young.

I think when I am older and I give in to the greyness I will go for it again in a Judi Dench kind of way.

I have a pixie cut. <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=michelle+williams+hair&hl=en&sa=X&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7GGNI_en-GBGB443&biw=1600&bih=688&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnso&tbnid=tnWtiS_bj2m6TM:&imgrefurl=shelbydoeshair.blogspot.com/2010/11/michelle-williams.html&docid=QamiUln8xzt8PM&imgurl=2.bp.blogspot.com/_Sm0ZkRMd5Is/TONtMsdKt-I/AAAAAAAAARU/4lpRndjqbUs/s1600/michelle-williamsshort.jpg&w=400&h=400&ei=qW7MT5z6Acut8QP5ssDuDw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=434&vpy=111&dur=141&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=96&ty=132&sig=113009520490002199739&page=2&tbnh=153&tbnw=136&start=32&ndsp=40&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:32,i:192" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">This is my hairspiration- I think she looks absolutely stunning. I started with a bob, and went shorter gradually- pic on my profile of my first shorter haircut. I now have it shorter than Michelle Williams on that other picture!

I also have thick, fast growing hair. Ask them to really thin it out, especially since you are likely to have a sort of side parting- one side does mushroom a bit by the end of of it, make sure you keep straighteners handy to flatten it! Invest in a couple of thick hairbands- on bad hair days as it gets to needing a new cut, it flattens it down a bit, and keeps your fringe trapped behind your ear a bit, rather than in your face. Sort of like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=michelle+williams+hair&start=218&hl=en&sa=X&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7GGNI_en-GBGB443&biw=1600&bih=688&addh=36&tbm=isch&prmd=imvnso&tbnid=9QCU03AuUFFArM:&imgrefurl=www.elleuk.com/beauty/news/hair-rules-at-the-golden-globes&docid=li-CY97QWZGSDM&imgurl=www.elleuk.com/var/elleuk/storage/images/beauty/news/hair-rules-at-the-golden-globes/michelle-williams/13216430-1-eng-GB/michelle-williams_GB.jpg&w=278&h=361&ei=9G7MT6WuDciK8gOtysEL&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=301&vpy=314&dur=328&hovh=256&hovw=197&tx=132&ty=221&sig=113009520490002199739&page=7&tbnh=151&tbnw=117&ndsp=38&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:218,i:105" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this.

Have a think about your colour. When it's short you can get away with colours which look ridiculous on long hair. I currently am white blode, and I love it! It has also changed the type of clothes I wear- I now wear lots of peter pan collars and round necks, and tend to wear more fitted things. I feel a bit 'boyish' wearing baggy clothes, which I could get away with with longer hair. Still wear them occasionally, but nowhere near as much.

Oh and finally, before you have it cut, go on a hunt at the front of your hairline for any calflicks, or whatever they are called! They are so hard to straighten out when your hair is this short, so make sure you put your parting at the opposite side!
