Children's suncream recommendations please

I bought Nivea children's suncreams for DD1 (4) and the baby version for DD2 (10 months) and they've both come out in rashes which aren't heat rash. I'm going to buy them new ones so any suggestions would be really helpful. Both DDs do get eczema sometimes.

we use Uvistat. Up until recently we got it on perscription but i think you can buy it in Boots, its about £12 i think.

Best I found for DS2 who is v sensitive and ezcema prone, is from Lidl of all places. The sensitive range (white bottle).

kickingKcurlyC · 25/05/2012 20:43

I use Sunsense Toddler Milk. Or an Avene spray one in an orange bottle.

wildstrawberryplace · 25/05/2012 20:43

Ultrasun range is fabulous.

ihearttc · 25/05/2012 20:56

Proderm Sun Mousse-amazing stuff! Comes in a canister like hair mousse and doesn't leave a sticky layer on your skin. DS1 hasn't got eczema but it's literally the only suncream he doesn't react to so we all use it now including DS2 who is 18 months. School were very impressed last year as well with it!

Pelicano · 25/05/2012 20:58

I would like to use Piz Buin Allergy but can only find SPF30....anyone else seen SPF50?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/05/2012 20:59

Ultrasun is the only one the DCs and I can tolerate.

poshbeaver · 25/05/2012 21:01

I've just started using Boots Once 8 hour factor 50 and I think it's brilliant. My 4 and 1 yo have worn it for 4 days and neither has any sunburn despite spending the majority of their tine playing out. would hotly recommend!

COCKadoodledooo · 25/05/2012 21:09

Funny you should start this one NotSoGrumpy, only ds2 came home from nursery all blotchy and swollen looking the other day. It had been overcast in the morning so I hadn't put any cream on him, so when they took them out to play when it was sunny later on they slathered him in Nivea. That we'd used on him last year with no problems at all. Clearly they've changed their ingredients.

He's fine with the Boots Soltan one we usually use.

vix206 · 25/05/2012 22:14

My DS has also reacted to the Nivea for kids one. All blotchy on his face and a rash on his neck and arms :( I'm now trying Banana Boat for babies which so far has been better. DS is 21 months.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/05/2012 22:20

We used to be fine with Nivea until about 3 years ago, then it started bringing me and DD out in a rash. Trouble is it's so expensive to have to keep trying new ones. We didn't get on with Banana Boat either, can't remember if it was a rash or just the feel of it (it was like a gluey layer).

girliefriend · 25/05/2012 22:22

I bought the worlds most rubbish suncream from Wilkinsons - its like war paint and doesn't even flipping work my dd has come out of school with sun burn to her cheeks even though I plastered her in it this morning Sad my own fault for buying one of the cheaper ones, will be going to boots tomos!!!

SearchSquad · 25/05/2012 22:31

Johnsons & Johnsons suncream for kids (SPF 25 & 50) works really well for my DC. We tried several brands but this one (and the J&J suncream for babies SPF 50+) were the ones that suited my DC the most.

It isn't sticky and is quite effective at preventing sun burn.

fragola · 25/05/2012 22:35

Green People works very well on my sensitive ds. You can buy it at Waitrose or online:

teejwood · 25/05/2012 22:48

Another vote for green people unscented here for dd with eczema. Also lavera spray has been good but just SPF 20.

yummumto3girls · 25/05/2012 23:23

We use P20 for all the family, husband is sun intolerant and gets heat rash really easily so this is really light, soaks in quickly and highly water resistant. DD also gets really bad reaction to most creams and this is one that she doesn't react to. It is once a day but we tend to reapply, have used it on all 3DD's in Tenerife for last 4 holidays and no burning! (it does stink though!)

euphrosyne · 25/05/2012 23:27

bepanthen baby sun cream spf50
Very very good.

boringnamechange · 26/05/2012 00:13

Nivea brought my two girls out in blotchy red skin too luckily only used it when slightly sunny and they were in shade mostly so know it wasn't sun burn. That was two years ago. Last year and this year I used loreal kids spray really good, good application and doesnt affect their skin.
Nivea cream did the same to me last year but not the Clear spray so obviously something in the ingredients.

busymummy3 · 26/05/2012 00:22

Boots Soltan is the best, have tried nearly all the other competitors eg Ambre Soleil , Nivea etc and although no allergic reaction Soltan just better rubbed in easy lasted a long time.
Banana Boat the worst made my childrens faces sting.
Have never tried the once a day sunscreens like p20 although very tempted just not sure whether I am confident that they can actually only be applied once a day would panic that I missed someswhere resulting in Burn/Blistering

nobodysfool · 26/05/2012 07:23

Another vote here for green people .ny son used to react the same as yours have and after trying all the ones on the shelf at boots and spending a fortune I stumbled upon green people. More expensive than the high st brands but worth every penny as my son has never had a reaction .

The3Bears · 26/05/2012 07:56

Ive been using the new boots Soltan 8 hr play for ds while hes at school etc he has v sensitive skin and it's been great for him.

GiantPuffball · 26/05/2012 08:05

I've always got on well with Soltan.

QuinnFabray · 26/05/2012 08:08

I second Proderm sun mousse. I never use anything else now, on the kids or myself. It's so easy to apply, and gentle enough for dd's eczema.

GodisaDj · 26/05/2012 13:06

I've been using P20 too on 9.5 month old dd and she has mild baby eczema. I was worried it would be a bit harsh on her but it hasn't bothered her at all and she was in the paddling pool yesterday too, so water resistant.

SaraBellumHertz · 26/05/2012 13:32

I live somewhere very hot and totally recommend the ultrasun clear mist in factor 50. It is brilliant - they never burn and there is not application - literally just spray and go and never had any rashes/reactions even when small.
