Is this dress too boring for a wedding?

Here from Hobbs www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0112-5407-3579L00&productvarid=0112-5407-3579L00-NAVY-12&refpage=dresses/smart-dresses

How could I make it more interesting? It fits really well but it's just smarter than the look that I was going for - the wedding will be fairly relaxed I think. Does anyone have any ideas?

Funeral Yes wedding no way

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 25/05/2012 08:02

Depends how you accessorize it TBH, I mean it's always going to be a very formal dress but it'd be festive enough for a wedding with less formal acessories - for example silver sandals, a patterned shawl maybe this in the navy (you need to click the swatch) and a bright bag.

or

coral sandals, striped scarf and a cream oversized clutch

If you feel great in it go for it!

MaryMaryOnTheContrary · 25/05/2012 08:06

Lovely dress but if the weather's bright and sunny, all the accessorising in the world won't make this say "wedding". I think it'll look like you've used a lovely dress but something you just have in your wardrobe, not something special for the day.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 25/05/2012 08:08

Yeah, that's true.

Bluestocking · 25/05/2012 08:36

It's beautiful, but it depends what kind of wedding it is. If it's a city register office followed by lunch at a smart restaurant, that dress (with suitable accessories - Procrastination, I love the idea of coral sandals!) would be perfect. If it's tepees, homebrewed cider and a shaman from Glastonbury, you might feel a bit over-formal!

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 25/05/2012 08:54

Erm - I disagree with my last post!

I do, in fact, still think that it can be just grand with the right accessories - coral sandals, the zara scarf and a good big clutch in a neutralish colour (say cream or beige) and it'd be quite appropriate.

chocoroo · 25/05/2012 08:56

I don't think it's the right look for a wedding. Looks like a work dress to me.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 25/05/2012 09:00

The Davina is a work dress too, I've seen that recommended for weddings about 3472 times...

Bunbaker · 25/05/2012 09:09

I adore that dress. I want one now!

But, I don't think it is a wedding guest dress. You don't have to go all floral and Per Una, but it is too sombre for what should be a happy occasion.

passivehoovering · 25/05/2012 09:11

I like it, simplistic and linen, which will be cool. Try a bright fluro modern necklace from COS or h&m , with one of their handbags which have a bit of fluro in too. What shoes have you got to go with it? There are some on primark, featured in the Libertylondongirl blog which I think would go well if you haven't any.

MaryMaryOnTheContrary · 25/05/2012 09:13

Ah, it's navy....not black.

It.....might....just.....work!

nothingoldcanstay · 25/05/2012 09:15

I think it's nice for a wedding but probably better if you are blonde?

You could offset it with a pretty hat or some of those IC shoes. Classy and understated with fun and pretty thrown in. I think weddings are one of the few times you can't look too smart. The casual ones always look out of place IMO.

Bluestocking · 25/05/2012 09:28

May I disagree, Bunbaker? When DP and I finally tie the knot, it will be a very grown-up affair (city register office and smart restaurant) and I would be very happy if our female guests were wearing that sort of dress - with appropriate accessories. It totally depends on what kind of wedding fruitcorner is going to. I hope she comes back and tells us ...

AuraofDora · 25/05/2012 09:36

I like your dress, what about fancy hair do , beautiful bright scarf, handbag, sandals huge brimmed hat, it could be the basis for a lot of coloured accessories in your favourite loud colour
I dont see what is wrong with using a good basic dress and accessorising

nilbyname · 25/05/2012 09:40

A bit boring and severe.

I like this more but only if you like green

AuraofDora · 25/05/2012 09:43

i really like green but I am sorry that green is putrid nilbyname

dark colours are elegant and can be accessorized well, not everyone feels comfortable in floaty flowers n pastels

dexter73 · 25/05/2012 10:19

You are wrong Aura - that green is lovely!!Grin

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 25/05/2012 10:37

I like that green but it depends on your colouring.

The original dress might be a bit plain for a country-type wedding, but for a city one would be great, I think.

fruitcorner · 25/05/2012 10:44

Thank you for all the replies and the different views! Wedding is not very formal, it's in hotel but will be relaxed rather than posh. Ideally I would wear something less stuffy but I haven't found anything that suits so far. I actually tried that green dress on in Hobbs ( and the rest of the other dresses there! ) but wasn't convinced. What about this dress, solar but less worky?m.hobbs.co.uk/product-detail?productid=0112-5363-3501L00&productvarid=0112-5363-3501L00-NAVY-10&refpage=search-results&view=3&searchpage=1&pagesize=12&searchterm=Caroline
Or this reiss one ( but slightly see thru)

Thanks

The Reiss one is very pretty and I can imagine you'd wear it again loads.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 25/05/2012 11:13

I think the dress in the OP is way more suitable than the ones in your last post.

How about this or this? from damsel in a dress. this is quite like the reis one but less day-ish (loads of bargains on there).this? looks balck online but is navy, quite a few in budget on there actually.

But, the original hobs dress really would be fine.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 25/05/2012 11:24

Oh, the second hobs dress is navy too - thought it was black. So yeah, that's doable. Looks ever so middle aged though, would be fiine for mother of bride / groom.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 25/05/2012 11:49

The Reiss one the OP linked to is VERY suitable for a wedding, I think ? the model in the picture is even styled a bit wedding-ly.

fruitcorner · 25/05/2012 13:32

Thanks for all the comments, food for thought, veering towards Reiss one now ....
Enjoy the sun everyone!
