Is there such thing as a sun hat that doesn't make me look like a total numpty?

Well. Is there?!

JennyPiccolo · 23/05/2012 20:56

Don't think so, sorry.

ObamaSelf · 23/05/2012 20:57

If there is, I want one too! Burnt my scalp Monday.

DroughtMyArse · 23/05/2012 21:01

Ouch, burnt scalp Shock

Damnit Jenny, wrong answer, try again.

Maybe a headscarf? I would love to know the answer to this question too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/05/2012 21:04

Straw trilby thing?

CMOTDibbler · 23/05/2012 21:08

You can choose a stylish hat (which may or may not stay on and get crushed easily) or a practical one. I have a huge red straw one like this which looks nice with dresses, but will more normally be found in an England cricket hat which stays on properly when running around. I also have a reversible bucket hat in UV resist fabric, which is deeply unattractive.
I burn vvvv easily, and get sun stroke too, so spend all sunny days in one hat or another

peachypips · 23/05/2012 21:09

Bandana.

DroughtMyArse · 23/05/2012 21:15

Absolutely no to scarves, bandanas and caps. I like that sunhat CMOT but think I am too much of a shortarse to pull off massive hats Sad

It seems to depend on whether you look ok in hats generally. I don't Hmm

I can't find a winter one that's ok let alone a sunhat. I look like the worlds oldest evacuee in woolly winter hats and Secret Squirrel in a trilby.

Summer is worse. I tried on a big straw one today. It looked as though it an enormous flappy object was consuming my head.

CMOTDibbler · 23/05/2012 21:21

Ah, I am tall, so look stupid in small hats, hence the issue with the bucket hat. I like a trilby

JennyPiccolo · 23/05/2012 21:44

What about a Rosie the riveter type headscarf? Only really works if you're a bit rockabilly.

trumpton · 23/05/2012 22:22

DD (30 years ) bought THIS ONE today . I really like it. Much better in RL than in picture.

suburbandweller · 24/05/2012 09:15

I have a Melissa Odabash one. They are stylish but £££ - although I've just spotted one in Debenhams for less than £15 in the "Beach by Melissa Odabash" line. Actually Debenhams seems to have quite a few nice ones

klaxon · 24/05/2012 09:19

Have you considered a parasol instead Grin

thenightsky · 24/05/2012 09:23

TK Maxx. Try to find one with elastic around the inside of the brim instead of that normal ribbon type band. Mine is a floppy blue and natural coloured straw one that stays glued on even in a high wind.

Tannhauser · 24/05/2012 09:26

I have a plain bucket-type from gap (about 100 years ago) that is good, and a floppy straw type for they beach (oddly, also from gap, rather a while ago) the kind you can squish up in a suitcase.

Disclaimer: I probably look like a numpty in each, sorry!

YohoAhoy · 24/05/2012 09:30

I feel your pain. I used to be a stylish hat wearer. I could wear anything. I don't know what has happened to my head as I've got older, but now hats look awful on me.

In winter I seem to look like a burglar whatever hat I wear, and in summer I look like a startled owl in all hats. S'not fair. :(

The closest I can get to not looking laughable is something like this hat

Metabilis3 · 24/05/2012 09:32

Sadly neither headscarves nor bandannas do the job. I look awful in summer hats too but I look worse with sun-stroke which I have had enough times in my life to know I never ever want to get it again.

thenightsky · 24/05/2012 10:14

Like that straw cowgirl hat... very Daisy Duke Grin

crowface · 24/05/2012 10:31

I look like either a farmer's wife or demented folk singer depending on the style of hat. I'd like a trilby but fear I would look like a total wassock.

Straw cowgirl is really the only way I can go with hats. But my head is rather large - so if I find one that fits (a very rare event) I have to buy it.

Huffpot · 24/05/2012 13:03

Shall watch with interest!
I am absurdedly fair skinned and even though will feel a bit silly in a hat while pram pushing I need to protect my skin.
I quite like the trilby hats but do they really give much protection? Love the floppy sun hats but they're so very big

BensonBunny · 24/05/2012 13:16

I bought a trilby style panama hat in France last summer which is great, stays on well and gives good sun protection. I'm sure you can get similar here.

Pinot · 24/05/2012 16:07

I like a right tosser in hats.
