I need some comfy shoes for sightseeing: Fitflops?

We're going to the States at half term - east coast cities so it'll be warm. I was going to take my trusty gold birkies which go to everything & always used to be comfy (have had them 2 -3 years). However, I've been wearing them today for the first time this year and they're really making one of my insteps ache. I do have some very soft suede brogues which feel like slippers but I think I'll be too hot in them (I was earlier today) plus they won't look right with some of the clothes I'm taking.

So, are Fitflops comfy? I don't want to look too frumpy.

Not that any of you are interested (passive-aggressive emoticon) but I was wondering about these:

Fitflops are supercomfy, much more comfy than Birks, but remember to take elastoplast, because the toepost will chew your toes up the first couple of times you wear them. fitflop lace-ups are brilliant too - I have a pewter pair which look great now they are a little creased and worn.

scampadoodle · 22/05/2012 18:11

Thank you! I might order them from John Lewis as it's free postage & try them around the house.

I wore them for almost all of last year (we were abroad in warmer climes) and found them extraordinarily comfortable. I can hardly bring myself to wear anything else now. But it did feel very odd at first, and took about 48 before I felt ok in them.

Having said that, everyone I see wearing them looks like a unfashionably dressed middle-aged woman, like me. I might have to move on to something else less comfortable.

scampadoodle · 22/05/2012 18:16

I bought these last week but am worried about the comfort factor although they feel fine. Haven't worn them yet so can take back.

Agree Fitflops super comfortable - the thick sole really cushions your foot well if you're dong lots of walking. Can't cope with toe posts myself so have to go for their sandals with a strap or slide. Also have the lace ups which I agree are very good for walking .

ggirl · 22/05/2012 18:20

I live in mine in the summer but the toe post was agony for a few weeks.I emailed the co about it and iirc they told e to take a nail file to it to soften the toe post

M&S do some nice comfy footgloves sandals in the summer that are also really comfy...even dd wore them on her gap yr travels and said they were comfy.

scampadoodle · 22/05/2012 18:21

Lady Peter: Grin

I've ordered them so we shall see. Need to remind myself that I am 47 and blisters on holiday are No Fun.

ggirl, what do you actually do with the nail file??

ggirl · 22/05/2012 18:22

these or these

ggirl · 22/05/2012 18:23

It was a bit scratchy so filed it down to soften the plastic of leather or whatever it is.

cocolepew · 22/05/2012 18:26

It sounds like your birkies are just worn down.. i'd buy a new pair of them.

happywheezer · 22/05/2012 18:26

I have a spangly pair, the ones with the gems on and an orange pair.
I love them and took them to Cornwall for a weekend.
They are comfy, I'm not sure about the style factor but I'd rather be comfy.
I don't have any issues with the toe posts.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 22/05/2012 18:26

I have a pair of fit flops and a pair of the M&S ones. The M&S ones are far better - I have had no problems with the toe posts but have had huge problems with the Fit Flop toe posts.

HelgatheHairy · 22/05/2012 18:27

I wore fitflops (with a toe post) all through my 10 days holiday to New York last year and not a blister.

I wore them ONCE for about 4 hours a few weeks ago when we had nice weather, 2 huge blisters.

I would just make sure they are broken in properly.

Zoze · 22/05/2012 18:28

I love my fit flops, couldn't be more comfy. Would ave no problem wearing them fora sightseeing holiday.

scampadoodle · 22/05/2012 18:31

coco: yes, I did wonder that & I may end up getting another pair but fancied a change. I'm fine with birkie toeposts.

ggirl: yes, they're both nice. My holiday wardrobe will be tapered chinos/leggings with linen shifts/vintagey dress & skirt.

Can I ask how old you are, scampadoodle? I used to be fine in Birks but haven't found them comfortable enough for a long day out for a few years now. I think feet stiffen up or something and we need more cushioning between sole and hard, hard pavement as we, ahem, advance further into our prime, and Birkies don't provide much in the way of a cushion.

DelGirl · 22/05/2012 18:40

I bought these recently and I live in mbts normally. They are very comfy though I admit i've not walked miles in them I do live in a cobble stoned hilly village where comfy shoes are a must. Definitely recommend.

Eegh no.what are davina brand things like ? Is pic of her on some ? Leopard toe posts I like

BikeRunSki · 22/05/2012 18:46

Fitflop sneakers are probably the most comfortable thing i have ever worn on my feet. I can wear them for hours of chasing the DC and pram walking.

scampadoodle · 22/05/2012 18:46

Ha ha Bluestocking! yes, strikes a chord - I'm 47. The Fly sandals & the fitflops are so lovely & padded and birkenstocks just look so...hard Smile

I've also ordered the M&S ones so just time for a big try out (and a big return-to-shops before we go on Friday.

Delgirl: I wanted a paler colour, or dark blue at a push but thanks for the suggestion.

FitFlops are fantastically comfy and the cushioned soles prevent shin splints if you're walking on hard surfaces for long periods. Also can be scrubbed in hot soapy water if they get mucky/sweaty. I would never go back to Birkenstocks, the suede sole is hard to keep clean and fresh.

Strawbezza · 22/05/2012 19:04

M&S also do clear gel toe-post cushions that fit around the toe-posts on shoes, very comfy and no blisters. About £3 for a pair I think. Used them last year and they were great.

doglover · 22/05/2012 19:11

I have 11 pairs of Fitflops!! Their non-toepost sandals are bliss - like walking on clouds! You won't be disappointed ....................
