I need some comfy shoes for sightseeing: Fitflops?

We're going to the States at half term - east coast cities so it'll be warm. I was going to take my trusty gold birkies which go to everything & always used to be comfy (have had them 2 -3 years). However, I've been wearing them today for the first time this year and they're really making one of my insteps ache. I do have some very soft suede brogues which feel like slippers but I think I'll be too hot in them (I was earlier today) plus they won't look right with some of the clothes I'm taking.

So, are Fitflops comfy? I don't want to look too frumpy.

I got a pair of fitflop trainers from tkmaxx yesterday for £29.99..they gave me a blister on the back of my heel .

springaroundthecorner · 22/05/2012 19:22

I love Fitflops. I wear them as often as I can and find there is nothing better than putting them on after a day in office shoes. Its like a foot massage. I dont think you will go wrong with a pair OP and they do look really nice as well as being comfy.

(If anyone does want Birks TK Maxx have them in at the moment.)

Why not go for Fitflop mule type sandals- they have lovely silver ones, glittery ones and raffia style ones with no toe post. I love love love my fitflop boots esp my fur lined mukluk fitflop. So comfy tho not stylish. Or try the fitflop plimsoll in a pewter colour. Shoetique are good and so are harvey nicks for stylish ones. Have a great holiday you lucky thing. Envy

I have just ordered these merrell siena

I have high expectations. And personally prefer the look of them to fit flops.

I have Sketchers tone ups, and they are the most comfy thing ever on my poor old feet. The thick sole, and the variable density stop that walking on marbles feeling

Fitflops are in TK Maxx at the mo - new and miles cheaper than rank ones on ebay. I bought the Goghs (black, bliss) for £19.99 and brown (not a ghastly brown) for 24.99, as opposed to £85 each.

Classic walkstar flipflops are £14.99 - seen in black, red and blue. And mens for £30.

I have put my elderly pairs in the washing machine for years even tho they tell you not to.

Corygal Damn you! Had told myself no more trips to TK Maxx until I actually need something, now I'm going to have to see if there are any bargain FitFlops.

I love my fitflops and this post has reminded me I need to purchase a new pair as the toe post on my last ones didn't last long.

Bluestocking · 23/05/2012 13:11

There you go, scamp, I'm 47 too! It's Fitflops all the way for me now - I can't even wear MBTs any more, they make me feel like someone is beating the soles of my feet and not in a good way.

polyhymnia · 23/05/2012 13:21

Funny this quesion of age has come up. I'm older than 47 and purchased some Birkies last year, as serious walking sandals, after raves on here. Liked the look and they seemed comfy at first, but the sole just seemed too hard after my Fitflops which are so well padded. Glad it's not only me anyway!

ACoiledThing · 23/05/2012 13:39

I have never been able to wear anything with a toe post but my Fitflops have proved to be the exception. After a shaky start I wore them solidly all last summer and they were fantastic and versatile. Even prefer them to my trusty Crocs which I have to admit are not the most elegant of footwear. Enjoy your holiday, lucky thing.

steph124 · 23/05/2012 15:17

These FitFlops don't have toe posts so might be comfier?

I have some Lollas from last year. Very cnmfortable but for serious walking I prefer a back to my sandal. But for people who don't and are quite happy with mules/ slides they're good.

There are a couple more 'backless but not toepost' styles this year which look nice and I'm going to try on because they might feel more secure than the Lolla does on me.

This is pretty:

and this is a plainer version:

Am definitely going for a pair of these, which do have a back strap:

and maybe these:

I bought the fitflop walkstar slide ones today in black patent and think they're going to be fine. I like the one with the toe posts better but have never found any flip flops that didn't wear holes in the sides of my toes. I didn't even try the fit flop toe post ones as just presumed I'd not be able to wear them. Might give em a go though. I love the padded soles. I've worn MBT trainers for years and can walk for miles in them. Tried Sketchers version and they made my feet roll inwards and the tongue gets all squooshed up and the trainers themselves slip off after a while. They were a total waste of money for me.

BasilDonna · 23/05/2012 20:07

Love them, I walk an awful lot and they are the most comfortable ever.
Got mine from Boots.
Will investigate TKMaxx though, would be rude not to.
