Help! MN haircut = mullet!

BrittaPerry · 22/05/2012 13:36

ARGH! I gave myself the MN haircut, dyed it all black/purple, and it looks like a mullet! The short layers are kind of more "pouffy" than the others.

I have a work thing to do tonight where I need to look good (hence the haircut, and I have tried to dye it purple but it has turned nearer to black and so I will have to wear more makeup just to look alive)

WHAT DO I DO????

Yeah, a pixie cut would really suit you. Can't you just take the DC with you to the hairdresser on the promise of a DVD and chocolate and crisps when they get home?

BrittaPerry · 22/05/2012 14:20

I always thought my face is a bit too masculine for short hair. I'm not the most girly girl anyway - I love makeup, but I tend to wear DMs, opaque tights, colourful dresses and suit jackets, so wouldn't a short do look odd?

Do old lady hairdressers understand these things? Or do I need to go to the one that does hair extensions and vajazzles?

Masculine?? You look more the slim, fine boned and elfin type to me!

But, don't let a bunch or random internet women talk you into a haircut you don't fancy, shortening up the back would be fine.

Get a pixie cut, go on, it'd suit you

ProcrastinationEatsTime · 22/05/2012 14:23

Old lady salon with give you an old ladt short do if you ask for a pixie, I fear. That'd be awful

LumpyLatimer · 22/05/2012 14:23

Short styles can be lovely and feminine, as long as they are all sort of soft and elegant. Think Audrey Hepburn and Michelle Williams!

For a short haircut do NOT, I beg you, go to an old lady hairdresser.

I bet you fifty quid you will end up with The Lady Di.

pictish · 22/05/2012 14:24

Go to the vajazzle salon - an old lady salon will not help you today....uunless you want a Pat Butcher.

ProcrastinationEatsTime · 22/05/2012 14:25

Oh hell, Latimer has it one. Would indeed be a Lady Di do

BrittaPerry · 22/05/2012 14:25

My figure is the kind of curvy type... I got measured for a vintage style dress recently and it was Bust 36, waist 31, hips 40. Don't you have to be a bit more straight?

I speak from bitter experience Sad

Take lots and lots of pics, and check out the wondrous Karla's CLoset blog for inspiration. Her hair's growing a touch now but by God she makes you crave a short 'do!

Although obviously it's entirely your decision blah blah Grin

LumpyLatimer · 22/05/2012 14:27

Damn you! Delightful elfin features and slim-yet-curvy physique - come down to where I live and let me play with you immediately

KellyKapowski · 22/05/2012 14:27

I'd be careful about going too short, your hair looks quite wavy and 'pouffy' in the picture, I think short cuts tend to work better on very smooth straight hair, especially if you don't own any straighteners.

ProcrastinationEatsTime · 22/05/2012 14:28

I have a friend who is tiny (under 5 foot), very curvy and rocks her longish pixie cut. She's less fine featured than you too...

havingabath · 22/05/2012 14:30

I did this too:)

I took more off, thinned out some parts, washed, put some curl encourager in and tousled as it dried then defined with wax. Looked like the first link from lumpylatimer.

Was given compliments on it and even told it was well cut!

QueenieLovesEels · 22/05/2012 14:31

Well, for now try and cut about five inches off so it is more bob shaped. Wear over one side.

I really think you could carry a pixie too but more of a bits and pieces semi mussed up one. Wax will be your friend to make it a bit more alternative.

Can you bob it yourself or grab a neighbour to help?

Really though try and wedge yourself in at a hairdressers and print off a great cut from WIP HAIRPORT. No biddy cuts then with a bit of luck.

LumpyLatimer · 22/05/2012 14:33

Deffo mussling and tousling. I am going to keep saying this in case you take any notice of this hair straightener nonsense Grin

You could also try Wahanda.com for vouchers for your local salons.

Last year I went to some swanky Westminster place and had a Director-level cut (full restyle), half head of highlights, Morrocan oil treatment and blow-dry for £49.

I think they were doing cuts alone for about £19.99.

ProcrastinationEatsTime · 22/05/2012 14:34

Nooo! Don't cut any more off your self and certainly don't attempt a bob - 'tis the hardest cut to get right.

I've been doing the MN haircut on myself for yonks, it's a peice of piss and always looks good. If you've managed to make it do that, it'd be best to never cut your own hair again leave well alone and Seek Professional Advice Wink

CaptainHetty · 22/05/2012 14:38

I had a pixie cut a few years ago and am seriously considering doing it again, it's fab. And I'm the least girly girl ever...

I'd second the advice to avoid straighteners and try to tousle it a bit, pin the back to make it a bit shorter, don't cut any more yourself. All is not lost! :o

FaceForRadio · 22/05/2012 14:39

Can someone point me in the direction of the mumsnet haircut?

BrittaPerry · 22/05/2012 14:40

I live in a former mining town (emphasis on the former...there's not much else round here except a car factory) - hairdressers are old lady, vajazzle or mens barbers. I could get into newcastle later in the week if the cut won't cost too much...

OP posts:
LumpyLatimer · 22/05/2012 14:43

There. Pin it up tonight, and then next week treat yourself to a trip to Newcastle. You're bound to find a really fab voucher for a salon there, and come home full of style and good cheer.

QueenieLovesEels · 22/05/2012 14:44

I cut my own pixie and it isn't hard. I cut the top to about three inches and go over the last half an inch with thinning scissors. Then I use wax to define the ends. I just feel my way around the back.

LumpyLatimer · 22/05/2012 14:45

I think we should see some photographic evidence of the success of this venture, Queenie Grin

CaptainHetty · 22/05/2012 14:47

Wow you're brave, Queenie! I cut layers into my own hair but I'd never be brave enough to do that :o

QueenieLovesEels · 22/05/2012 14:47

You can get it done at a biddy hairdressers. Just ask for a long pixie cut. Then when you get home restyle it to your liking with some thinning scissors and some wax. You will probably have to depooof the sides a tad....
