Family wedding, advice please?

We have a big family wedding coming up and I'll be meeting up with our gang of cousins. I am 36 and the only one with children. Cousins are all lovely but quite glamorous (think TOWIE) and the last time we got together, I felt like a librarian. I'll be going with DD, 11, who will probably wear short flower print dress and ballet pumps and will look beautiful. So, I went out today to have a look and the highstreet is full of bigger versions of what DD's wearing!

So have come back and had a cry and frankly now have no idea what I should be wearing. Mostly I wear Tesco Jeans and ASDA tops and I have a fifties style dress apart from that which I've been wearing to every other occasion apart from funerals for about 8 years. I want to look fashionable but not muttony - can spend up to £150 if necessary - any ideas would be really helpful, I don't even know what looks nice these days. I am a size 14. Thank you.

Wallis has a sale on at the moment with lots in it which might suit.
If I were you I'd go with a simple grown up dress. Not a wild print and a flattering shape. If your not used to dresses etc. you want to feel comfortable and confident as that's half the battle won in terms of looking good!

This is simple and probably flattering www.wallis.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33058&storeId=12557&productId=5463331&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=215487&parent_categoryId=209167&pageSize=20

or this www.wallis.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33058&storeId=12557&productId=4989486&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=215487&parent_categoryId=209167&pageSize=20

or this is gorgeous if you could wear a maxi length
www.wallis.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33058&storeId=12557&productId=4990035&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=215487&parent_categoryId=209167&pageSize=20

If you prefer a pattern maybe a polka dot like this
www.wallis.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33058&storeId=12557&productId=4712698&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=215487&parent_categoryId=209167&pageSize=20

or this?!
www.wallis.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33058&storeId=12557&productId=4795631&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=215487&parent_categoryId=209167&pageSize=20

Sorry if that's a few too many links!

Do you still like the 50's look? How about this could be stunning and leaves loads of budget for beautiful accessories too. Almost all their dresses are great TBH.

Or, are you after something totally different?

MrsLettuce · 18/05/2012 15:46

Oh, and I'd avoid anything at all like this lovely number. It's a great dress (as are a lot of the other similar ones about ATM), suits a lot of shapes and sizes as well as a wide age range.

Unfortunately the word is that they're massively overrepresented at weddings this season.

UML · 18/05/2012 15:53

Any colour you prefer?

Have a look here www.coast-stores.com/ to see the different colours and styles to see if there are any you lean towards, or to help us find a perfect dress for you.

If you're after a 50s style dress then I'd go for an Emily and Fin dress. They come in some lovely unique prints;

wisecamel · 18/05/2012 19:30

Thank you so much - it was lovely to come back home and have so many ideas. I really like the Emily and Fin dresses and I'd not heard of those before. I like blues and greens as I have red hair. I guess I just don't feel very confident - a bit fat and pastey!

green - my favourite of theirs and a really flattering shape. these and maybe this bag? Or a gold one.

I bet you'd look beautiful!

sweetheart · 18/05/2012 20:17

I ordered this in the cobalt blue earlier this week and it is a really beautiful dress and good quality for the moeny. The colour of the cobalt blue is georgeous and to jazz it up a bit I'm going to swap the belt with either leopard print, teal, grey..... etc. A pair of killer heals and a good clutch and you'd be good to go.

MrsLettuce · 18/05/2012 20:18

gold

joanofarchitrave · 18/05/2012 20:21

Wow MrsLettuce that is amazing.

wisecamel · 18/05/2012 20:52

I agree, the whole thing is lovely MrsLettuce - I will contact them to see if the dress will be in soon -it's out of stock at the moment, I think. But it is lovely, it has a little sleeve and not the high boat neck that everything seems to have right now. I tried some on today and made my bust look like it was a bolster round my waist.

I like yours too sweetheart - I think that I'm going to have to buy some accessories - never bought a belt/clutch bag in my life!

OP posts:
MrsLettuce · 19/05/2012 00:30

ooh, you like it too! Good. Wasn't sure you would.

Yeah, sorry it's out of stock but I think it'd be well worth contacting them. How long until the wedding? They have some other dresses in that style that are in stock - nothing quite as perfect as that though.

BackforGood · 19/05/2012 00:37

I love the green one MrsL has linked to. Colouring wouldn't suit me, but it's a gorgeous dress.

MrsLettuce · 19/05/2012 00:49

Were the shoes too high BTW?

Oh, oh, but how about 40's ish? this blue dress is fab, maybe red stilettos and a satin bag??

MrsLettuce · 19/05/2012 00:53

Oh, but red won't work on your skin tone, of course. Sorry. Erm, silver, black, ur will think.

wisecamel · 19/05/2012 08:45

this rather lovely, I think, but print and colour wrong - I like the back though!

Not so keen on the blue one - I do really like the green dress. Thanks! High shoes are fine if it's wedges, the red ones are lovely, but I think the heel is a bit narrow - I'm not used to wearing heels. The wedding is in three weeks.

sorry, was the sleveless version: here

wisecamel · 19/05/2012 20:07

Lettuce - the one you linked to is nice. I have absolutely no idea, to be honest. God, it's only a dress - I made less fuss buying my house! Blush

OP posts:
LettuceLaughton · 19/05/2012 20:17

Ah, you recognised me good. Forgot to say about namechanging Blush

Evyone makes a fuss about buying dresses, it's the law! Especially if you know your likely to wear it over and over at every special occasion for ages. There's nowt wrong with wanting to feel right.

Did you hear anything from LadyVintage about their green one? I still think that was perfect. A vintage-but-modern much, much is a less likely to date (badly) than any a.n. other highstreet dress, however timeless or classic it looks now, IYSWIM.

wisecamel · 19/05/2012 20:25

I found this but at 34" long I think it will be too short?

OP posts:
wisecamel · 19/05/2012 20:27

Nothing from Lady Vintage - I emailed them. I might call them on Monday just to rule the green one in or out. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

Dont forget to get your hairblowdried on the day and your nails done.

Towie style eyelashes optional!

LettuceLaughton · 19/05/2012 20:35

I get "Unfortunatenly, due to licenses issues we are unable to display our website in NL. " fuckers

LettuceLaughton · 19/05/2012 20:41

Oh, hadn't meant to post so soon - is it any of the ones on google images?

I totally agree about getting you hair / nails done. No scouse brows though hey Wink
