Is it unrealistic to expect make-up to stay put?

I find that after one nose wipe and one cup of coffee I may as well not have bothered, no matter how daintily I try and perform the above operations.
Do the rest of you touch up more than once a day or is there some magic in a bottle that I just haven't tried yet?

I find primer helps it stay put for longer.

Frog253 · 16/05/2012 13:46

Primer has crossed my mind BUT my nose is a dripper AND is one of the bits that I like to cover because it's red.

I've tried a green primer but I have to put it on v. thinly otherwise I have a green noes instead so it doesn't seem to help.

Mineral foundation? If you do it properly - and it only takes 10 mins once you've got the technique, it stays for ages.

dexter73 · 16/05/2012 13:50

I suppose if you are wiping a lot then not much is going to keep the make up on. I get this in the summer with hay fever so can sympathise with the red nose.

astreetcarnamedknackered · 16/05/2012 13:53

I know what you mean. no advice here.

Sometimes I think I'll just go for mascara and that's it. Then I realise I look so horrendous Sad without some slap. Bear

Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation (and primer underneath). Any Estee Lauder counter will be happy to give you a generous sample so you can test it out.

IME it stays on perfectly all day and it is definitely my favourite. Over the last few weeks I have had days where I was blowing my nose every 5 mins, but Double Wear can take it. With other foundations (or tinted moisturisers even more so) I would blow my nose and find the tissue covered in foundation!

Frog253 · 16/05/2012 14:18

Am currently using mineral foundation but it seems a bit patchy on my skin.

I will try Estee Lauder next as it is so well reviewed here (but then so was mineral foundation).
I know that wiping my nose isn't helping the situation but since make up is only properly removed with a make up remover rather than with a dry hankie surely it should stay put a bit better.
My skin is on the dry side and my age is the wrong side of 40.

Reading with interest as I'm the same as OP. Never heard of mineral foundation Hmm must google and might be tempted into visiting estee lauder counter too

I've tried mac make up base/primer and tbh didn't do the job enough for me to warrant bothering

QuinnFabray · 16/05/2012 14:31

MAC pro longwear is also good, or double wear light. MAC spf 50 primer is brilliant at keeping foundation stuck to your skin.

reastie · 16/05/2012 14:33

Interesting quinn as I've tried that primer and double light wear together and still it won't last on my skin. Maybe it's just me and OP with dodgy skin Hmm

whackamole · 16/05/2012 14:41

Mine just slides of the oil slick of a nose. When I have a cold I must look crazy because I try very hard not to wipe my nose and just dab it very genteel-like.

I quite like MAC Studio Sculpt for a longwearing foundation. They always match me really dark in the shop for some reason. Must be the lighting.

Frog253 · 16/05/2012 14:42

Will look up the MAC primer thanks Quinn. If it has a high spf it sounds doubly good.

Looking forward to going to an EL counter now. Do I need to take a little pot with me?

OP posts:
Frog253 · 16/05/2012 14:44

whackamole I know I shouldn't but I do tend to sniff a lot too (when noone else around of course).

Frog, EL normally have their own pots so you should be fine, but can't hurt to take your own just in case! I also like that MAC SPF 50 btw so I will agree with that recommendation.

EclecticShock · 16/05/2012 16:23

Primer and EL oil free foundations are good.

EclecticShock · 16/05/2012 16:24

Doublewear stays on better than the light and be careful what face cream you use, might be too rich. Clinique gel is very good.

AuntieMaggie · 16/05/2012 17:06

I've been trying mac studio fix whixh looks great at first but patchy by the afternoon especially on my nose.

Double wear is great though - i normally use the light version but used to use the original in my clubbing days (sigh)

ListeringArnacles · 16/05/2012 17:08

What are you using to apply your make-up? Best to do the following:

  • Use primer (MAC's new Prep and Prime Moisture Infusion is fab - I recently switched to it from their standard non-SPF Prep and Prime for the face and refuse to look back!)

  • If you have extra-oily skin (like I do!), follow this up with MAC's Matte (matte-ifying cream)

  • Use brushes rather than sponges or your fingers - you use less make-up overall (meaning you can save a hefty ton on replenishing your stocks) and the make-up you do use stays on longer

  • Mineral and powder make-up will last longer than liquids/creams

  • Buff the make-up into your skin using circular strokes (this applies to powder foundations and blushers)

I have yet to go through a single day without having to blot/touch up my make-up. Rather than blotting paper, use one ply of tissue (any brand will do) to blot any oil off. Press it gently firmly against your skin where you want to take oil, but without rubbing/sliding it around. Some of the make-up will come off but less so than with blotting papers (despite appearances to the contrary) and what makeup remains on your face will still look good.

Most importantly, figure out how to blow your nose without grabbing it so hard with your tissues - press tissue against the under-side of your nose when blowing, as opposed to against the sides of your nose. Short of showing you a video of me doing this(!), I promise you it can be done without leaking snot everywhere Grin

QuinnFabray · 16/05/2012 17:15

I still have to blot and touch up a couple of times during the day, no matter what I use.

Tip for the MAC spf 50 primer. The packaging is crap. Once you can't squeeze any more out of the tube, cut the bottom off and decant the rest into the pot. There's still atleast a third of the product left.

piggysarah1 · 17/05/2012 14:39

Estee Lauder double wear is the best , iv tried them all and i'm a beautician ! put some loose powder over it also helps .. tho they will say at make up counter not gto do that ! when i had my salon all my brides wore it .. i did too on my big day .. it is the best
mineral make up irritates my skin, even tho my skin is not sensitive!

suburbandweller · 17/05/2012 15:40

I've been using sudocrem as a primer after seeing it recommended on here and have found it makes a huge difference - my makeup nows seems to last all day instead of just for the morning commute. Am a nose wiper (hayfever) too.

CMOTDibbler · 17/05/2012 15:47

When I need lasting foundation, I use L'Oreal studio primer, then use a stipple brush (from ELF) to apply foundation (currently No7 mineral liquid). The stipple brush really seems to make a difference.

Max Factor liptint stays put all day too

Frog253 · 17/05/2012 20:49

Thanks for all your replies, loads of ideas for me.
Will have to retrain my nose blowing technique. Also I think that my moisturiser is too rich making my skin seem greasy when it is actually dry skin.

OP posts:
AuntieMaggie · 17/05/2012 21:14

Right tomorrow i'm going to try sudocrem as a primer!

reastie · 18/05/2012 13:39

Whenever I've put sudocream on my face in the past it's always made me a bit sweaty under a layer of something like sun cream does to you Hmm maybe that's just me
