Taming things down below (Possible TMI)

Help!

I need to "tidy up" down below but I'm not really sure what the done thing is. Wax is a no no. Do most people shave, trim, veet or wax? I've shaved before but can't be doing with the stubbly stuff that comes within a couple of days.

I need to get Bikini ready and would appreciate any advice.

Why not wax?

suzikettles · 16/05/2012 09:57

I don't bother really (shave the worst bits before I go swimming, maybe a bit of a trim), but I have to say the one time I did get a bikini wax it was much, much better than any other method.

Get yourself down to a salon. They've seen it all before and it's only about a tenner I think.

HairyFairy16 · 16/05/2012 09:59

Oh god I honestly don't think I could take the pain. It's just about manageable for my eyebrows!

It's not really that bad tbh. Ibuprofen beforehand, and because someone else is doing it you don't have that problem of chickening out half way through pulling the strip off and make it 100x worse .

morecoffeemorecoffee · 16/05/2012 10:12

Marking my place as I also in need of tidy up ready for holiday in 2 weeks! I don't shave (hate stubble down there!) And find veet only makes the area its used on look good for a day before the growth occurs (which looks as bad as shave stubble). I usually trim and then home wax (veet bikini strips) just the bare minimum!

AKissIsNotAContract · 16/05/2012 10:13

I go to a salon that does hot wax.

HairyFairy16 · 16/05/2012 10:14

...and how long do you leave the remaining hair? Do you trim it right back to bare minimum?

Elma Cream is meant to numb the pain.

RetroMom · 16/05/2012 11:15

If wax is out of the question just watch out if you go the Veet route. It can burn your undercarriage something horrible!

I have a home salon and do mobile waxing, but I don't wax myself, I shave, every day! It's the only way to stay nice and neat with no stubbly re-growth. I don't have the patience to wait for regrowth between waxing, hence the reason I shave. I use a 4 blade razor with a lubricated strip to avoid getting razor rash. I shave it all off (TMI?) because I feel cleaner without it, especially around that time of the month.

I shave but I wax my DP -Crack, back and sack. He's a sissy when it comes to pain but still lets me wax him. It really doesn't hurt that much if you don't tense up. Promise.

GetTheeToANunnery · 16/05/2012 12:43

I use DPs hair trimmer thingy on mine and then shave the under carriage. Sometimes wax my bikini line if it's getting a bit wild.
Everyone's different, do what feels comfortable for you

GetTheeToANunnery · 16/05/2012 12:45

Ps shaving isn't that bad if you do it properly, plenty of hot water etc

sugarice · 16/05/2012 12:50

I've got an epilator with an attachment head for the bikini area as I have never waxed. It's painless and does a neat job. Mine's a Braun Silk-Epil.

Peppin · 16/05/2012 14:23

Wax. It only hurts in the second the strip comes off, it isn't bad at all.

If you live in London, go to Sajna in Tooting or Clapham. £10 for a Brazilian instead of £40 everywhere else. And they're good. Open every day.

You can also get your eyebrows threaded there for £3.

I wouldn't recommend the £20 haircut though.

oasisinthedesert · 16/05/2012 14:46

veet not painful to do and no stubble

mpiskoto · 16/05/2012 15:01

I had lots of laser sessions to remove the hair permanently and it was the best thing I ever did. You only need a session every 2 months for about a year and a half and afterwards maybe once a year to remove any reappearing hair (which is too thin to be considered a problem, unless you are going to appear in a swimsuit). I also did this for my armpits and they are clean and smooth, with almost no reappearing hair at all! Heaven!

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/05/2012 15:06

Hijacking thread to ask about shaving! I use nair and rarely burn myself now but I then put up with regrowth until it grows long enough to nair again! Can't afford waxing anymore! I have tried shaving a few times and even with a new razor/cream I get horrible red bumps or even lumps under the skin that take ages to go down Confused am I just doing it wrong or something?!

FateLovesTheFearless · 16/05/2012 15:56

Maraki · 16/05/2012 16:11

Emla cream (get it from chemist), apply 15-30 mins before wax, WASH YOUR HANDS after applying and get a wax. You wont feel a thing.

morecoffeemorecoffee · 16/05/2012 16:49

fate I have the same problem with shaving Confused

retromom what brand of razor and gel/foam do you use and do you shave against the grain? Do you really shave everything every day?!

ujjayi · 16/05/2012 18:59

Can I just ask....is it the done thing to give yourself a trim prior to a wax? I usually only get it done once a year for beach holiday (and shave the rest of the year.) Just wondering what the etiquette is? And if it is easier for the therapist if the hair is neater, iyswim?

lumbago · 16/05/2012 19:01

yes it is

i DONT GET why people bleat about the pain. I though it was a big non deal

GetTheeToANunnery · 16/05/2012 19:13

Yes it's easier to wax with shorter hair, but not too short.

ujjayi · 16/05/2012 19:14

Thanks lumbago.

I don't get the pain issue either. It is over in seconds. The only time I have felt any real discomfort was when I decided (bravely or stupidly) to try a brazilian. Still wince at the memory of it!

lumbago · 16/05/2012 19:18

no - even that didnt hurt, unless you lot self hospitalise for taking a bloody plaster off.

sinkingflameofhilarity · 16/05/2012 19:36

I'm going to watch with interest too- I get the most god awful shaving rash, even with gel, a new razor, hot water, exfoliation, moisturiser etc etc. unfortunately the only time I got a wax all the pulled out hairs left little bleeding spots that took ages to heal...

I've decided my skin just doesn't like defuzzing and get by by shaving the visible bits pre bikini (just pre- before the lumps appear)

I'd be delighted if anyone has a miracle solution- I thought about laser, but can't afford it!
