Is it still a dreadful faux pas? I have an extremely posh wedding to attend and have a beautiful knee lenght white shift dress. Can I wear it? Help!

No, you should not wear white to a wedding.

AllPastYears · 09/05/2012 12:25

Don't do it!

ontow · 09/05/2012 12:36

Even if it really accessorised iwth colour? How a about mainly black, with a big splash of colour on the front?

are you the posh bride? if not, no.

CeliaFate · 09/05/2012 12:42

Someone wore a white shift dress to dn's wedding. It looked fine, didn't upstage the bride, if anything it was less conspicuous than the huge array of massive fuschia flowery print dresses.

Northumberlandlass · 09/05/2012 13:04

I wouldn't wear white to a wedding....my MIL wore white to mine Confused

gregssausageroll · 09/05/2012 13:11

Wear what you like. Bridezilla if she says anything about it but TBH she and no one else will probably notice.

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/05/2012 13:25

I think the etiquette is that you shouldn't but its up to you if you do or not.

I personally wouldn't.

AngelDelightIsIndeedDelightful · 09/05/2012 13:36

For me, black is just as bad as white ontow. It's bad luck. My then friend wore a black dress to my wedding and I am still disappointed some nine years later even though we're no longer in touch. She'd asked me what I thought and I'd said I'd rather she didn't but she went ahead anyway. It just reinforced my feelings that she was a selfish cow.

If it was my wedding, I wouldn't mind if you wear bright accessories to cover up the whiteness - coloured shoes, hat, cardi/jacket etc. Coral is very on trend at the moment :)

mirpuppet · 09/05/2012 16:35

Fulhamup · 09/05/2012 17:15

No, it's bad manners. This is the bride's big day. Surely you can rustle up something else?

I have worn black to a wedding loads of times, as have my friends. I thought Red was another no no colour though .....

But don't wear white.

dexter73 · 09/05/2012 18:43

It is considered bad luck to wear green to a wedding.

EdithWeston · 09/05/2012 18:51

Never white (or nearly white) unless you are the bride (or bridesmaid). Never black, as it is funereal and déclassé. Red is a no-no to Chinese, and I think Hindu, weddings.

Other colours do have symbolism and superstition, but none as strong as those.

Of course, if you do decide to wear a frowned on colour, nobody will say anything to your face.

dexter73 · 09/05/2012 18:52

Just googled why!
Green was always avoided, as it was though to be unlucky. To say a girl 'had a green gown' also implied that she was of loose morals, because her dress would be grass-stained due to rolling around in the fields! Hence 'Marry in Green, ashamed to be seen'.

Iwantcandy · 09/05/2012 19:06

No

NovackNGood · 09/05/2012 19:13

Yes you can and don't worry about it.
