Help! Are fascinators really "out"? Wedding tomorrow...

Violetroses · 04/05/2012 19:42

I was planning to smarten up my slightly dull breastfeeding navy dress with a pink fascinator in my hair and pink pashmina. Now everyone (well, my mum, the paper and today's Woman's Hour) says fascinators have had their day, and no self-respecting woman is wearing them any more.

Is this right? I've never worn one before, but don't want to embarrass myself at the first exciting social event I've been to in two years!

Can anyone advise me???

went to a wedding last week. London wedding so moderately fashionable guests. Not one fascinator. Not a one.

AngelWreakinHavoc · 04/05/2012 19:45

I'm not sure. I wore one last week and so did my sister in law. There were other women wearing them too...... Confused

I had been to Debenhams and was dressed by the personal shopper, she did not mention anything like that.

Bugger! Thanks for quick reply. I'm off to ponder my options...

My cousin wore one to my wedding and spiked me in the face with it. I hate the bastards.

NotMostPeople · 04/05/2012 19:48

Considered naff I also heard the woman hour program and tbh if woman's hour says they're 'out' then they are most definitely out.

FauxFox · 04/05/2012 19:49

what about this? all the style of a hat with the convenience of a fascinator Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 04/05/2012 19:53

I've bought a fascinator for a wedding next month and I don't care if it's considred naff. It suits me.

Gapants · 04/05/2012 19:58

Totally naffola, sorry.

What about a nice slide instead to lift one side of your hair off your face?

Good idea but am trapped in b and b with baby whilst dh does the rehearsal. Now am worried that pink nail varnish is too garish....grrr, am so out of date!

Too matchy matchy I think.

Navy dress- lovely, pink pashmina is fine. I would then go plain nude/clear nails. What shoes?

What about a wasit cinching belt with your dress?

Tranquilidade · 04/05/2012 22:09

Who cares if somebody says they're in or out? I went to a lovely Barmitzvah last year and there were loads of them. I have to say the ladies were all stunningly dressed too so not a naff style event.

Wear what you feel good in and you'll look great whether some so-called expert says it's in or not.

im with tranq

I personally loathe fascinators I'm afraid and was delighted when I heard the Womans Hour piece but plenty of people clearly don't and I bet you'll find others have them too. So if you feel happy in it wear it with confidence.

I'd change the nails if you can - you can get nice nude polishes and some remover pads quickly and cheaply in any Boots or local chemists and do a quick job in the morning - have certainly done this sort of thing myself a few times!

Violetroses · 05/05/2012 09:28

Just seen this re the nails! Aaaargh! (runs away shrieking).

Just wear what you LIKE Jesus, why do people care if something is in or out!! Go and enjoy the wedding, hat or no hat. Who cares

EdithWeston · 05/05/2012 09:37

Agree, just wear what you want.

There are still plenty of fascinators on show. Personally, I like the ones which look like little hats.

Gapants · 05/05/2012 09:44

the poster did ask, so I assume she cares Confused. Obviously it is not that a big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

noddyholder · 05/05/2012 09:50

Awful things never been in get a lovely hat or clip or nothing

ggirl · 05/05/2012 09:54

imo they ruin a nice outfit not smarten it up , they look stupid
nice clip or flower in your hair much better

EdithWeston · 05/05/2012 09:55

At least they're far less common than nude shoes....

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 05/05/2012 09:58

if you like it, wear it. there is a weird snobbery around fascinators...

lucyellensmumnamechange · 05/05/2012 10:09

they aren't even that fascinating - i don't get it. But then i don't get fashion either. All it means to me that because soeone decides floral dresses will be in (for example) this summer, you will only be able to buy floral dresses or the equivalent of. So if its skinny leg jeans, then you'll have to search for loose ones. Its sheep making.

Violetroses · 06/05/2012 08:01

Just a quick update - wedding was fab, and there were about 20 fascinators on display, worn by ladies in their 20s as well as the mother of the groom and the older relatives. Actually, they looked great, and lent an appropriately festive air to the proceedings. Glad I didn't go bareheaded, although a little hat would have been more chic. And nude nails were the way forward.

Thanks for all your help!
