Possibly stupid questions about SPF

I'm a bit new to all this game so I thought some of you veterans could help me out. I'm 32, fair skin with rosy complexion. Have just started using SPF in the past year, specifically Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster factor 30. My questions are:

  • If I mix the SPF with my usual day moisturiser, is it just as effective? I use roughly equal parts of the two. I tried using SPF by itself but it stung my eyes badly
  • If I wear SPF30 mixed with moisturiser, and then a BB cream on top with SPF15, what is my total SPF? 30 or 45?
  • Is SPF30 high enough on a bright sunny day?
  • Does SPF lose it's protection as the day goes on and is there anything I can do about this?
  • Any specific products you can recommend for dry sensitive fair skin? I'm thinking of trying the La Roche Posay Anthelios factor 50 next

Thanks Smile

I think dermalogica boosters are designed to be used with other products.

If your wearing 30 and 15 the maximum protection you have is 30.

30 is fine for a sunny day.

Yes it breaks down during the day. You could use facial wipes and re-apply.

I use clinique city block 40spf because it has higher levels of antioxidents.

'photo-stable' - ok thanks, will look out for this! Yes, I always wear sunglasses in the sun, good point. Facial wipes and re-applying is definitely a bridge too far for me but thanks for the info Smile

Any problems with CityBlock 40 making your eyes sting? Do you mix it with another cream or just apply by itself?

I put it around my eyes and I dont get any irritation. I apply it neat onto bare skin i.e I dont apply a moisturiser in the morning.

Adding together SPFs does not work.

The highest figure is the one that is active- so SPF 30 + SPF 15 still = SPF 30.

I think that City Block says avoid eyes- or am I wrong? I find the CB 25 fine on my eye lids but everyone is different.

I wear sunglasses when it's sunny and also use a foundation with SPF on my eyelids.

yes, sunblock wears off on your face just like it does on your body- so applying it at 8am is not going to last 12 hours.

Thanks Fluffy

Hello. We've just clocked this thread and thought it would be helpful to post and say we are already in convos with the folks at Garnier Ambre Solaire about an expert Q&A on suncreams, sunscreen and all things SPF. We'll let you know when we know more...

Lottapianos · 30/04/2012 13:16

Oh that sounds excellent - thanks Helen Smile
