Covering up grey hair

I have noticed a few grey hairs and a few more... I'm not sure if others can see them yet, but I'd like to conceal them before anyone else notices. I fear that one morning soon, I am going to wake up and have a head full of grey hair and it will be too late?

Is the only option to dye it? I have blond-ish light brown-ish hair and have never coloured my hair - ever. It is so multicoloured, I'm worried it will look odd if coloured. I don't want a big change.

Any (non expensive, please!) suggestions for what to do or which colour to choose...etc.

Oh, and I'm 33! Shouldn't this not happen for a few more years yet? Is it possible that these will fall out and the rest of their family will arrive in 10 years time? Grin

I am older than you -40s - but would like advice too. Have some grey at the sides / fringe area. Just been occasionally using wash in/ wash out colour but not wildly effective. Very lazy with hair so want something not too difficult/ time consuming. Minimum intervention approach!

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 21:13

Yes, this is what I'm looking for. What is the wash in- wash out stuff you're talking about?

Should I have posted in S&B?

I have just ordered some Loreal professional Chroma colour care which is supposed to condition and colour hair.I bought it on the strength of a thread on S&B. It is available in different shades.

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 21:22

Thanks! I will go look at that now. Is it possible to do a blonde/light brown colour or do I have to go very blond or very brown if colouring?

I've asked MNHQ to move this to S&B. I hope they can if not too busy :).

Keratina - just googled and it looks great! But... will that refresh my own colour or do I need to colour it first then use chroma care?

OP posts:
HavePatience · 21/04/2012 21:25

Sorry. Kerstina - autocorrect changed it!

OP posts:
SunflowersSmile · 21/04/2012 21:25

Is it permanent though kerstina?
I have been using stuff from superdrug [not great as tends to 'brighten' grey areas but look less grey!]- colour effects washin, wash out. Does say not for grey hair probably for reasons mentioned!

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 21:26

Grin at brightening the greys!!

SunflowersSmile · 21/04/2012 21:28

ooh kerstina, I have googled it too. Tell us more!!

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate · 21/04/2012 21:29

HavePatience, I found my first grey hair at 20 - now, at 39, I'm almost entirely grey Blush, not that anyone would know cos I've been dying it all those years Grin!

Personally I've always gone for a salon dye but it's not cheap. However, I find it gives a much better finish as it doesn't end up a 'block' colour but instead is tinted, highlighted, etc.

It's actually quite good fun now as I can experiment with different colours and looks, although my hair grows fast and managing the roots is a PITA!

cece · 21/04/2012 21:32

I have given up with the dyeing and have embraced the grey. I have a grey badger stripe effect at the front. I like it and several people have complimented me on it.

kerstina · 21/04/2012 21:34

Well I have just been googling myself to find out if it permanent dye and cannot find an answer. I presume its quite gentle though.
I am going to try it for the 1st time tomorrow although my hair is brown I have some greys and am hoping the gold colour one will look like highlights but it might be very wishful thinking Smile

SunflowersSmile · 21/04/2012 21:35

Do you have to order it? How much is it?
Keep us posted!

SunflowersSmile · 21/04/2012 21:35

I would probably be gold colour too.

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 21:40

Where can you order it from kerstina?

I thought it sounded like something that enhanced colour... So wondering if it will enhance natural colour/cover grey? Confused
I cannot embrace grey. I still feel 22! Wink
How do you manage the roots?

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 21:40

Would gold be blonde/lt brown mix? :)

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate · 21/04/2012 21:41

cece, I admire you. I wish I could do the same Blush. I don't feel very attractive at all at the moment (overweight, bad skin, etc), I think grey hair would be awful unless I was slim and attractive, but then I am completely grey so a little different.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 21/04/2012 21:50

I have dark blonde/light brown hair naturally with grey bits. The most natural look I have found is a mixture of blonde/brown and caramel highlights/tints which disguise the grey and don't leave an obvious line for regrowth. I did try a block colour but that was so flat and also just highlights which accentuated the regrowth. I do like my hair very much, but it's taken a while to get the eefect right Smile

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 22:05

Missbehaving that sounds like me. Do you have this done at a salon? What exactly do you tell them that you want?

OP posts:
MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 21/04/2012 22:34

I used to have it done at a salon, but my stylist left and went mobile so she comes to me now. We worked it out between us but what I have is;

half a head or T section very occasionally I'll have a whole head just to make sure it all blending through properly.
3 colours - one as close to your darkest natural colour as you can get - if in doubt go a bit darker because it will fade. a caramelly colour and a light blonde (which disguises the grey)
she then puts thin slices and weaves (2 different techniques) through the hair alternating the colours - MUST use foils.
on the greyest bits she will put the blonde though so you can't see any regrowth.

It lasts for ages without me noticing any regrowth tbh and it's not streaky or khaki Grin.

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 22:48

Hmmm that sounds like what I'll need when this all gets out of hand (the grey). Thanks, Missbehaving! I don't suppose your hairdresser would travel to me, too? Grin

Beehiving! Sorry. Autocorrect does not like MN names!

BellaVita · 21/04/2012 22:57

I also have mine done at the salon.

I will be 47 in August.

About 18 months ago, I started having a semi permanent tint on my hair along with colours done in foils.

Last week, I went to a permanent colour and this will be touched up on the roots in between my full colours as the grey is just so visible now.

HavePatience · 21/04/2012 23:02

How much does it cost at salon/mobile salon?
