What do you keep your make up in?

I had been keeping mine en masse in cutlery trays in a bedroom drawer.

However I've now moved the mirror in there that was in the good light, the littlies have done a bit of a raid (think loose powder all over drawer - not good Grin),and basically the whole thing needs a bit of a re-think.

Do you keep a bag with you and keep the surplus and/or duplicates elsewhere? Or keep just one bag? Are you a bathroom or bedroom maker upperer?

Inspire me with your storage solutions! (please!)

I'm a bedroom girl (light no good in bathroom), but was thinking yesterday I need to sort things out.
Atm I have a make up bag with 'stuff I use daily,' but can be awkward to scrabble around in when I'm in a hurry.
Then a see-through acrylic chest thing containing the odd impulse buy/'going out' colours.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 20/04/2012 09:07

Something like this but with three drawers.
Not the prettiest thing for the dressing table but I like being able to see everything.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 09:13

Thats nice actually Shotgun, but I imagine it gets to look a bit dusty and powdery.

I forget what I've got.I must have 3 or 4 mascaras on the go.I also have 'going out' colours (languishly dustily somewhere since the last time I went out before Christmas )

Its bedroom for me too, as better light and theres a seat.

I have a small make-up bag thats goes with me everywhere, that holds my daily essentials.

But then I have 4 large drawers each side of my dressing table, 3 of which I fill with make up in these kind of things

Its all divided by type so nails, blushers, lips etc. I do use a kind of cutlery thing for all my brushes and another drawer organiser which is is little squares for eyeshadows which I organise by colour.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 09:38

See,nailvarnishes,thats another thing too.
Mine are currently in a plastic box on a high bathroom shelf (not wishing the kids to try the same trick on nail varnishes that they did on my loose powder)

Ruby,do you keep duplicates of your make up bag,or just use those in there and fetch it from your handbag?

I keep mine in the ensuite.

I have a bag with everyday stuff in then about 4 other bags with extras and going out make up.

Nail stuff is in a vanity case.

anniewoo · 20/04/2012 10:34

See through small pencil case from Tesco.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 11:04

So definitely see through bags/cases of some type seem to be a theme....

Look on YouTube or makeupalley for make up stashes... and be amazed!

EllenParsons · 20/04/2012 12:06

I keep mine in my bedroom. Most of it is in a sort of leather tray with dividers for different sections (hard to describe, bit like a Bento box... it's a Raymond Waites one from TK Maxx if anyone has seen them). I put a few things into a small makeup bag when going out but I don't really have duplicates.

Astr0naut · 20/04/2012 12:11

Glad its not just me who has a whole drawer for make up.

Lipsticks start off in the drawer, then migrate to various handbags, only to be collected together on the mantlepiece and put away, then the cycle begins again.

LookAtAllTheseFucksIGive · 20/04/2012 12:21

I have a see through vanity case, numerous Soap and Glory vanity cases one of these on my little make up area I have created on a shelf as I don't have space for a table. It does get dusty but I give it the once over with a babywipe every now and then and its fine.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 12:24

AstrOnaut sounds like a working system to me!

Sorry skinny had to make an emergency tampon run isn't it lovely having a teenage daughter

Yes I do keep duplicates of my essentials. I use the same eyebrow stuff, mascara, eyeliner, concealer and corrector everyday so keep doubles of them. Also I flit between 3 foundations/tinted moisturisers depending on my skin and have a go to lipstick and eyeshadow so keep doubles of these.

I suppose some people think its excessive and does seem expensive when you go out and buy the doubles but after that you're only replacing one each time so its sort of a one off cost.

I live in hackney and theres nowhere to just pop in and pick up mac or bobbi brown or whatever so I find it keeps me ticking over until I can go and get what I need or wait for it to be delivered.

If i ever find I don't want a duplicate eg I discover a better product I just give it to DD to use or DD2 to play with.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 12:35

Thanks Ruby! I reckon I could do duplicates with what I already have.

I know you should chuck out any make up that's past a certain age,but I'll confess to a couple of occasional lippies I use being around 20 years old....Blush

OP posts:
Astr0naut · 20/04/2012 12:39

Until I let ds play with it last week, my oldest lippy was 14. It was Black CHerry, Rimmel. Wonder what the same shade is called now.

Blush 8 drawer storage unit from staples Grin

Am currently planning turning a walk in cupboard into a make up storage. Having a dressing table with chair, big mirror, daylight bulbs, 2 x 4 drawer storage units and shelving

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 12:42

I just let DD1 have one of my pale 'iced' lippies to play with.

Thats got to be from over 20 years ago, thinking about it....

Really brighthair?

I'm Envy not Shock

Good on you,it sounds lovely!

RubyFakeNails · 20/04/2012 12:44

Well my mum has a Mary Quant eyeshadow palette she bought in Biba in the 60's!

She still uses it every now and again but both me and now the DDs have played with it as children.

I think it may be our only family heirloom Blush

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 12:49

Sounds much better than a lot of the usual horsebrasses and ornaments tat people normally inherit Grin

RubyFakeNails · 20/04/2012 12:55

I've just had a quick look online, think this could easily become a new obsession but this is actually a quite cheap and really good way to store make up. Think I may buy it then put it in the wardrobe.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 12:58

OMG that is fantabulous Ruby!

I need a locking version though Sad

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 20/04/2012 13:24

Right I'm actually off to do my sort out.

Poor,I use empty ferrero rocher containers for loads (I think my corsages are in one). Its a dirty job having to empty them though.Grin
