Never underestimate the power of a bit of lippy

My Mum taught me everything I know ( expensive skin care & lippy habit )! She is 88 & very frail & over the last few years has not cared about any of this. She went into a care home 3 weeks ago & the change is marvelous. Cue to today, she has rifled my Lipstick Queen shade ( a tasteful nude ) and my BM blusher.

After I applied them she was like a new woman, gone was the depressed, sad Mum and back was the woman I knew of old. I direct you to the subject title. For anyone one who says this doesn't matter, speak to her.

Oh that's lovely to read. I hope she's settling in well.

Must confess that I always wear make up even the day after my c-sections I was to be found applying lipstick.

enthusiasmcurbed · 19/04/2012 19:54

Thank you, she is like Mum of old. I couldn't believe it today when she raided my make up bag ( though if it's reasonable to have 8 lipsticks in your every day bag is questionable ) When I was ready to go home from hospital ( pregnant ), a bit of make up did the job.

That's really nice, glad she's feeling better

madmomma · 19/04/2012 20:51

That is lovely to hear. I am just like your Mum in that I feel like a different person with my make up on. I find it massively therapeutic to be able to paint my face. Fake it til you make it I say!

enthusiasmcurbed · 19/04/2012 21:04

madmomma, that was her! Her make up and mine, was about us and how we felt.

Jessicaalbastwin · 19/04/2012 21:42

Aaaaaahhhhh thats sweet Smile

EllenParsons · 19/04/2012 23:49

Lovely post :) I agree makeup does matter if it can help people feel pride and confidence themselves or just gives them a bit of oomph. It certainly makes me feel a bit better when I have it on.

Schmaffy · 20/04/2012 09:45

That's just lovely. Go your mum!

emrys · 20/04/2012 09:49

Lovely! I have a big smile now also feeling inspired to go and get dressed and put make up on even though I'm alone and working from home.

madammecholet · 20/04/2012 13:25

I went and bought a new lippy today - must have been inspired by your Mum enthusiasmcurbed.. tis gorgeous MAC Lustre SEE SHEER, it's a coral sheer. Delicious. :)

NoMoreInsomnia12 · 20/04/2012 13:27

I don't do lippy for every day wear, I always feel too made up with it on. I just wear concealer and mascara with a bit of Vaseline on my lips.

enthusiasmcurbed · 20/04/2012 14:09

Madammecholet, that sounds a lovely shade. Mum is quite dark skinned so corals look lovely on her. me, I look terrible. Damn my pasty skin

Thanks for telling us all about this.

Heres to a (literally) brighter time for your mum. And long may it continue!

Guinnessisgoodforyou · 20/04/2012 15:04

Your mum sounds so lovely. I'm just the same, without make up I have zero confidence, with a bit, just a bit, I feel ready to face the world. I applied make up after I gave birth to all my children. Made my top half feel good even though the rest of me was in agony :o)

Originalplurker · 20/04/2012 15:09

never do now that im in 30's

ans recently discovered how fantastically different i look n feel if i have 'me brows' on, dud them once and learnt how to properly, thiness had crept in, i swear it takes 5yrs off me especially if no grey rootsshowing BlushWink

enthusiasmcurbed · 20/04/2012 15:13

Original my brows are looking crap atm. Am looking into having somethinganything done to them.

I love lipstick - always makes me feel better - narrowed it down to about three shades now. Hope I'm still going for it at 88Smile

Originalplurker · 20/04/2012 21:40

Enthuse mine need minimal plucking but are thin so learnt how to use eyeliner pencil, I recommend starting with a very mid grey or brown til u get used to it, if I'm wearing heavy eye make up I use black but I'm dark headed.

Go for it I swear by my eyeliner on the brows. I have looked into having individual brow hairs semi tattooed on, but happy with liner tbh.

Originalplurker · 20/04/2012 21:42

Hastty I have three shared too that I use for every day use. Getting fed up of lipgloss hair is always getting stuck to lips and it irritates me, too older for this....Hmm

enthusiasmcurbed · 21/04/2012 10:43

Original thanks for the tips, will give it a go. Might try & find a dark blonde or light brown. Smile

I had a similar experience enthusia.

My dear Little Nan went into a care home for her last 4 weeks, I went to visit her often, but she was looking frailer and was missing her trademark brooches on her blouses and lipstick.

I offered to take in some nail varnish and tidy up her nails, and this did her the power of good, she always had very neat nails with a pale pink polish.

Glad your Mum is looking like her old self :)

And for more power of lipstick, an extract from the diary of Lieutenant Colonel Mervin Willett Gonin DSO, who was among the first British soldiers to liberate Bergen-Belsen in 1945. Gonin writes about the arrival in the camp of a very large quantity of lipstick.

"I don?t know who asked for lipstick. I wish so much that I could discover who did it, it was the action of genius, sheer unadulterated brilliance. I believe nothing did more for these internees than the lipstick. Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet red lips. I saw a woman dead on the post mortem table and clutched in her hand was a piece of lipstick. At last someone had done something to make them individuals again, they were someone, no longer merely the number tattooed on the arm. At last they could take an interest in their appearance. That lipstick started to give them back their humanity."

worldgonecrazy that is so moving!

enthusiasmcurbed your mum is inspiring, what a lovely read this thread is :) I hope she's settling in well.

My mum loves lipstick too and is never without her Boots no 7 sweet sizzle. They discontinued that shade so I buy her it in bulk on eBay whenever it comes up. Eventually she'll have to give in and get a replacement but for now she refuses! :)

I'm more a lipgloss or balm girl but have been toying with the idea of trying lipstick again.
