Does anyone, apart from Bridget Jones's mother, still 'get their colours done'?

You know - those consultations where they tell you that you are a 'Spring' and should only wear pastels (or something like that). Just idly wondering if people still do this.

Seems to still be quite the thing on here, yes.

AmberNectarine · 18/04/2012 18:10

Yep, a great deal of M'netters have had it done. I had mine done a couple of months ago and was declared a Winter. It has been a great help when shopping and has helped me understand why I wasn't wearing things in my wardrobe even though I ostensibly liked them.

AmberNectarine · 18/04/2012 18:11

Although there is no season that should only wear pastels...

Hopefully · 18/04/2012 18:30

Yup, I think it's actually on the rise again (based purely on threads on here). I found it absolutely amazing, and it's not like they tell you that you can only, e.g. wear pastels or only black and white. Style day a la House of Colour is also fabulous.

MsNorbury · 18/04/2012 18:42

I did. Was sceptical.
Has transformed shopping.

DarrellRivers · 18/04/2012 18:44

Cod was a big fan-[expects to see her here, klaxons probably sounding on twitter]

mindthestep · 18/04/2012 18:53

Sorry! I should have looked through the 'Style and Beauty' threads before asking the first random question that popped into my head. (I'm only an occasional visitor to MN, and hadn't come across this section before.)

Interesting to hear that the colours thing is still popular - and less rigid and more helpful than I had assumed. Thanks for setting me straight on this.

Would a colours/style day or something like that make a nice gift for a friend, or might some people take offence - perhaps seeing it as a criticism of their dress sense, or just a bit didactic?

I would love it! but only if I had never had it done before. Mebbe ask if they want it?

anniewoo · 18/04/2012 19:46

How much is House of Colour? Do they do a Style Day and a colour day?

Buying it as a gift for a chum, beware. Whilst I would personally LOVE it , a pal of mine was given a styling/shopping session for a birthday present from a group of girlfriends and was MORTALLY offended, as she is a stylish girl who needs no such assistance unlike me.

It actually caused quite a lot of bother, and a bit of upset so be careful.

Kittykatzen · 19/04/2012 07:50

I had them done in school at 17 as part of a 'school leavers preparation course'. I'm a summer apparently.

PerryCombover · 19/04/2012 09:07

I did, it was really worth the cash and has made shopping and wardrobe miles better

BirdyBedtime · 19/04/2012 09:17

Was a real eye opener for me as i wore lots of black - am a bright spring so black is the devil colour for me !!! Certainly feel that most of the colours in my palette suit me although am very annoyed as there is lots of coral in the shops recently and I don't have any money to buy clothes - Grrrr. Must say that you should give it a try - although steer clear of the scarves in the bumpf you get sent - they are so 70s and fit for pensioners! I went with a friend (both got it from DHs as birthday present) and it was good fun. Haven't done a style day though as I think that is a step too far.

mindthestep · 19/04/2012 09:45

Thanks again everyone. And thanks claudiaschiffer - I'm sure many people would love this as a gift, but it seems I was right to worry that some might take offence. I think I'll bring up the subject casually in conversation to find out if such a gift would be welcome or not. Might spoil the surprise a bit, but at least I won't hurt anyone's feelings!

Actually, it sounds as though it might be quite a fun thing to do WITH a friend, providing the consultants (or whatever they're called) don't take themselves too seriously. Are they frightfully earnest about it all?

mindthestep · 19/04/2012 09:52

Sorry BirdyBedtime - we posted at the same time. Glad to know it is fun to go with a friend.

I have to admit that 'bright jaunty scarves' sounds like something my grandmother would tell me to wear!

Where do you go to get these things done then? Im rubbish knowing what looks good on me and what doesn't. Its a skill I always wished I had. At 33 Im not too late am I?

GinPalace · 19/04/2012 10:06

I scoffed my head off at my sis when she had this done - then she made me go, and I have found it invaluable as my wardrobe is finally starting to see some sort of cohesion and it has helped me make much better choices.

I sort of would like to try the style day but am still sceptical it would be worth it so until someone shells the money out for me I will be remaining ignorant. Grin

Zombie Go to the House of Colour website and they will show you the nearest consultants to you. We went in group of 3 - it took a fair amount of time but a nice lunch was laid on as part of the cost so it was a nice girly day - I'd even venture it'd make a good hen party activity with the right people.

It wasn't too late for my retirement age mum and she has dressed much better since and now only looks like a mad-old-cat-lady occasionally!! Grin

2ombie5layer · 19/04/2012 10:08

Thanks Gin I saw HOC, but didnt have a clue what that meant. Will take a look.

noddyholder · 19/04/2012 10:10

They love a jaunty scarf Cringe!

GinPalace · 19/04/2012 10:17
