Is it possible to "dress down" a pencil skirt?

I mean a sort of jersey fabric one, pref black.

I'm sick of jeans and I struggle to find casual clothes that flatter my hourglass shape. I'm really into 50s feminine style at the mo, so am wondering if skirts could mix things up a bit?

Yes, if you team it with a simple silky best tucked into it. Light pastel colours work well and if you don't want to show your shoulders and bare arms if it's chilly wear a long cardi over it to dress it down even more

FauxFox · 15/04/2012 07:44

yes...with slouchy knit or with white T and a denim jacket?

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 15/04/2012 07:48

I have a stretchy black pencil skirt that I bought from warehouse in 1999 and still going strong! I've worn it for work, but also worn it casually, with sandals and a t shirt + nice scarf etc. Think I've even worn it with trainers/converse. I wore it all through my pregnancy too as the waist was elasticated! The elastic is finally starting to go, so I bought a new, more tailored pencil skirt but it has already started to split at the back! I need a new stretchy one. Where did you get yours?! Grin

What about this one?

Mine was more of a slouchy, a line, below the knee stretchy one iyswim? But the fabric was nice and thick so it still looked smart if necessary.

Mombojombo · 15/04/2012 09:28

Yes, I've got a couple of jersey stretchy ones from good old Primark. One sort of camel coloured, the other black & white horizontal stripes. Both can be smart with blouse, heels & jacket, but I tend to wear them with sloppy sweaters from Zara and chunky boots.

SaltResistantSlug · 15/04/2012 10:11

Thanks all! I'm excited now. Was convinced everyone would say it would just look too formal!

Real I've not made the purchase yet, but I'm thinking of this one from DP - in fact they have loads so I might get a few styles.

Thanks for the link always but £98 is a bit steep for me whilst on mat leave - unless I'm getting several, that is...!

I keep meaning to have a look around Primark Mombo. What's the quality like?

Salt - I got the same skirt too! but I bought it to wear out with a few blouses that have been lurking in my wardrobe. ankle boots might help dress it down?

CuttedUpPear · 15/04/2012 11:36

I wear mine with a big jumper and black wrestler boots.

Mombojombo · 15/04/2012 14:26

Primark's hit & miss to be honest. Some of their staple stuff is better than it used to be (simple vests, long-sleeve tshirts etc) so its cheap to stock up on layering bits. You may find you have to gather your thoughts and prepare for a bit of an assault on the senses depending on the branch. I've never been in one that didnt have piles of clothes knocked off the hangers and shelves, big queues for changing rooms and tills etc. it is amazing what you can get for such a small amount of money though (my shopping ethics are temporarily on hold while on statutory maternity pay!!)

Havingkittens · 15/04/2012 15:35

If you're into 50s style but don't want to be too dressy you can wear it with a fitted t-shirt. Dorothy Perkins have some really cute slash neck T Shirts at the moment which are only about £4 each and look great with a pencil skirt of capri pants. You could also try with a little shirt, knotted at the waist - leopard print, hawaiian, gingham etc., bowling shirt, fred perry type polo shirt, halter tops, gypsy tops etc.

For casual shoes, something like low cut Converse www.office.co.uk/womens/converse/dance_lace/20/10311/30728/1/1?fs=10311

Or rafia wedges.

Or some Miss L Fire lovelies

I dress in a rockabilly/50's pin up fashion and have a couple of pencil skirts at the moment. My denim one I wear with white or navy t shirts, a cropped cardigan, pumps or wedges and getting some converse next week to go with. My leopard print one I wear with black t shirts and cardigans and black pumps or wedges, I wear a bandana or hair flower to accessorise.
Im hoping to get one of the pencil skirts with braces soon too.

SaltResistantSlug · 15/04/2012 16:33

Good purchase Moo! Bought mine this morning online. Wink

Mombo exactly the same reason I'm considering Primark!

Kittens thanks so much for all of that. Loving the low cut Converse, didn't know they exist. Also thinking of some [http://m.asos.com/mt/www.asos.com/Lacoste/Lacoste-Ziane-CA-Plimsolls/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2012757&SearchQuery=lacoste%20shoes&sh=0&pge=1&pgesize=12&sort=-1&clr=Navy Lacoste ones like these].

Stella I'm looking to get a denim one too. Any suggestions? And stupid question - but
do you tuck t shirts into the skirt?

I give up on the link.

SaltResistantSlug This is the same as mine, I was very lucky that they were £9.99 with free p&p when the £5 eBay voucher was available so only cost me £4.99! I wear my t shirts tucked in and sometimes with an elastic waist cincher belt, I wear them high on my natural waist rather than low slung.

SaltResistantSlug · 15/04/2012 20:32

Thanks. Speaking of waist cinchers I bought this from Zara.
