Is it time for mummy hair??

So, for the last 27 days I've pulled my hair into a ponytail repeatedly as the bands come loose and pinned my fringe back of my face with 4 grips. It's not nice or flattering. Consequently I've not needed to wash my hair much as it is so stuck to my head.
My hair is longish - past my shoulders with some layers, thick and dark (with due on top to cover greys). I have a longish fringe that covers my eyes about half way and a side parting.

I'm not adverse to something shorter and funky would be amazing. I've had my hair broadly like this for about 5 years. I'm 32.

Any suggestions for something easy maintenance but actually nice? My baby is only 27 days as I say so I've got a lot more maternity leave to enjoy non smart work hair

Please help!

It's never time for mummy hair - never.

The only thing I would caution is going for a style that needs styling if you don't have the time. It's easier (and looks better) to put you hair into a ponytail rather than having to do the whole dry/style thing every morning.

A choppy bob might work? But make sure it is choppy/coloured or it really will be mummy hair IMO!

cybbo · 10/04/2012 09:17

Why not just a textured bob with a heavy fringe

She's got her fringe slicked over in this but you get the picture

Heswall · 10/04/2012 09:30

HOw much do you want to do to your hair ?

I found anything shorter than sholder length requires daily effort and is a pain in the arse.
But you'll have more time to do it on mat leave than when at work.

HettyKett · 10/04/2012 09:46

long layers and this sort of fringe looks fab if you 'do' it and also looks good if you don't have time to do anything but wash your fringe and bung it up in a pony tail.

It's NEVER time for mum hair.

noddyholder · 10/04/2012 09:49

It is never time for that!

McFluffster · 10/04/2012 09:53

Noooo to Mummy Hair!

ggirltwin2pinot · 10/04/2012 09:58

what is mum hair anywya?

yes to choppy bob

but tbh i think you should it wash more if it's sticking to your head... stop being gross girl!

cocolepew · 10/04/2012 09:59

I've started a thread about what mummy hair is. I think Sarah Millican.

Msarsebiscuit · 10/04/2012 10:10

Aged 45 and I would rather wear Crocs than have mummy hair - you are a mere babe in arms. I told my hairdresser that I specifically wanted to avoid the whole ' sensible-middle aged-mum-I-might-as-well-start-reading-The-People's-Friend-and-joining-the-National-Trust' look - she gave me a layered, choppy shoulder length cut that can either be blow dried or left to dry naturally and still looks ok.

tentative123 · 10/04/2012 10:11

I have no actual idea what mummy hair is!

It's not actually stuck to my head, it's not getting greasy cos it's just tied up all day and night.

Is the consensus that shorter is more work? I'm feeling quite up for it now, and thinking it might cheer me up given not a lb of pregnancy weight has dropped off yet.

Choppy bob might be a winner..

I agree that shorter hair is more work... I have very long hair and it's so much easier to just pull it back, and I can definitely get away with not washing it as often.

I'd experiment with more flattering ways to pull it back, and invest in a stock of nice hairpins, barrettes, scarves... on my worst days, I just twist my hair up on my head, pin it, and wrap a scarf or ribbon around as a headband. It takes two seconds but looks quite jaunty (I hope anyway!)

ggirltwin2pinot · 10/04/2012 10:29

yup agree with dreaminbohemain
keep the length and head scarves or scarfy type head bands are everywhere in the shops atm

BalloonSlayer · 10/04/2012 10:32

What's a choppy bob please?

< wails as also needs new haircut >

Gapants · 10/04/2012 10:34

You want to go and ask for the Freja cut which is this <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=i188.photobucket.com/albums/z67/designscene/designscenealbum/DSNEW2/FrejaBehaErichsenForTheLastMagazine.jpg&imgrefurl=www.designscene.net/search/label/Freja%2520Beha%2520Erichsen&h=676&w=500&sz=82&tbnid=Xb8FIO3X8Y1FxM:&tbnh=91&tbnw=67&zoom=1&docid=Zn7VAw4SmEskJM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Gv6DT66LDZLA8QOHr-m1Bw&sqi=2&ved=0CE0Q9QEwBg&dur=638" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> LUSH

Do not under any circumstances go for the following mid life crisis hair

Wig on wig--dark on the top and blonde underneath, or vice versa
Short and spikey- usually accompanied with a very red/purple dye job on a partial front bit.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 10:35

My hair is thick and dark and layered too OP...and I HAVE to advise you that ALL bobs "choppy" or not will look like Mummy hair....I've been there and done it all.

I am older than you and had my DC at 30...now I am 38 and have tried it all.

The ONLY answer when you have thick ark hair is to make the effort and do it up in a nice style daily. I go for a 60's style bun or a bouffant bit on top with a low ponytail. Yes...it takes time and hairspray but really...NO to the bob.

If you need to make things easier all round then loose some length...get it cut to shoulder length...but do it in the morning...thats the key. Bobs are even harder work to maintain when it's thick...you'll end up with a big ol' mushroom head.

Agamumnon · 10/04/2012 10:38

I was bored of the ubiquitous greasy-ponytail look. I did NOT want to go 'mummy'

So I went from bra-strap length to a really short cut and I feel fucking rock and roll again and what's more it's a piece of piss to style and maintain. It looks better when I haven't touched it for four days Grin

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 10:39

sticky couldn't agree more although having to dye it need not mean cutting it...I have had grey since I was 20! Long har is fine on older women if it is maintained and "done".

noddyholder · 10/04/2012 10:40

I am 46 and my hair is still in good shape so am keeping it longish too. No grey yet and still glossy and thick. I don't think I will ever cut it too short as I like to wear a chignon and hope to still wear it like that as I age.I think condition is important if you keep it long as some of my rl friends went a but stringy and thinnish and chopped it all off and look great!

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 10:40

But is your hair really thick Agamumnon? Or are you under 30? Cos' if you'e older than 30 then it's hard to leave your hair undone and still look good. And thick hair is HARD to manage when short unless it's REALLY short a la Mia Farrow.

Agamumnon · 10/04/2012 10:47

It's neither thick or thin really. I've got a couple of good products which I throw at it every couple of days.

I'm 35 but am probably kidding myself that I look a bit younger.

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/04/2012 11:10

Mine is really thick (I'm old - 46) and, until recently, was really long (and dark). Now it's shoulder length and auburn. I do favour "on air hair" (ie newsreader hair/Rene Russo in Thomad Crown Affair) when I do this look but I am waaaaay older than most of you.

I agree that bobs can go mumsy if you have thick hair but if you have a stylist not afraid to thin it out a bit, and get it cut regularly you should be ok.
