Is it time for mummy hair??

So, for the last 27 days I've pulled my hair into a ponytail repeatedly as the bands come loose and pinned my fringe back of my face with 4 grips. It's not nice or flattering. Consequently I've not needed to wash my hair much as it is so stuck to my head.
My hair is longish - past my shoulders with some layers, thick and dark (with due on top to cover greys). I have a longish fringe that covers my eyes about half way and a side parting.

I'm not adverse to something shorter and funky would be amazing. I've had my hair broadly like this for about 5 years. I'm 32.

Any suggestions for something easy maintenance but actually nice? My baby is only 27 days as I say so I've got a lot more maternity leave to enjoy non smart work hair

Please help!

missbeehiving not keen on that one at all.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 10/04/2012 12:07

I think it could be really awful or really great Grin

BonfireOfKleenex · 10/04/2012 12:13

MissBeehiving - I had a similar style once, it was ok when styled, but had a tendency to become 'horn' like... a bit like this

lovely

Gapants · 10/04/2012 12:30

noddy we are so on the same page

SunshineOutdoors · 10/04/2012 12:45

Do you really feel all bobs look a bit rubbish? I've had layers and a fringe/side fringe for ages, hate them now and want to grow them out. I'd like to have something like this although I am brunette so obviously wouldn't look the same. Is this one length but thinned out at the ends? 'mummy hair'???

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 12:50

I think that's ok myself Sunshine...but it's really just graduated medium length long hair so not really very bob-like though people would say it was a long bob.

At least you could still put it up.

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/04/2012 12:53

I like that one, Sunshine.

SunshineOutdoors · 10/04/2012 12:59

Some of my hair is that length but a lot of it isn't so I need to be patient and let it grow - will be nice to get out of the layers and a fringe either growing out or cut too short cycle that I've been in forever.

op is your reason for wanting a new style because you fancy a change or because of the maintenance with a new baby?

I think anything straightened looks dreadful I just don't get it at all.

SunshineOutdoors · 10/04/2012 13:16

hmmm, see my hair is dead straight anyway, if I had it thinned out a bit it would look pretty similar to how it does in that pic, although I do agree I'd style it with a bit more volume and life to it.... I was looking at the hair cut rather than the way it's been styled, I think there's lots of different things I could do with that hair.

garlicbunny · 10/04/2012 13:28

Mine's very thick, slightly wavy, coloured and elderly Grin

I've just cut it into a bob with layers round the face. It looks OK when it's behaving (I wanted the Twiggy stylishly-messy effect) but that takes mountains of smoothing product, a following wind and the planets in alignment. Most of the time it looks like somebody stuck a yellow candy-floss on my head.

The only style my hair likes is longish, choppy layers - beach hair, basically. It has enough weight to reduce frizz, and the short layers pop into waves. Very similar to Noddy's picture only far less exotic. I cut my own these days, so my layers are a bit hit-and-miss. But have always had ace cuts at Toni & Guy. They must do special training in layers for wavy hair!

In olden days, they used to call my cut a "long shag" Grin Dunno what you'd ask for now? Choppy layers, please cut into the wave?

noddyholder · 10/04/2012 13:29

I also like a long shag (matron). Cut mine myself too

garlicbunny · 10/04/2012 13:35

nudge, nudge, Wink Wink noddy

noddyholder · 10/04/2012 13:36

easy and stylish

theDudesmummy · 10/04/2012 13:43

I am 48, wear it past shoulder length and with a fringe, as I generally always have. It's easy to tie back for working and reading and I'm not planning to change it any time soon. I don't really care if people think I am too old for it, pfffft. I do dye out the grey.

Dotty342kids · 10/04/2012 13:48

As someone's who's had short hair for at least ten years as long = uncontrollable for me sadly, I can confirm that it takes WORK!
If you want easy then stay at least shoulder length, with or without layers then at least you can chuck it up in a ponytail / some other do when you want, but if you want to glam it up then you can go the whole blowdry and glam route.
I love my short hair but low maintenance it ain't. I have to get it properly wet every morning and then mousse, blow dry and wax it into shape.
Good luck!

FaneFeyre · 10/04/2012 13:55

Argh I am a brand new mum too and am in hair hell! Really need to get a chop and colour done; haven't had it touched since August and it's getting really long and looks dreadful. My problem is my hair is SO fine. It's so fine hairdressers feel the need to scold me about how fine it is every time I go get it done.

It looks shite cut short. And I think I need a side fringe but I nearly always regret getting a fringe cut.

Somebody posted a pic of Charlotte Gainsbourg? I LOVE her fringe, but are fringes in general just a bad idea with fine hair?

Sorry to hijack, OP! I think if you are lucky enough to have thicker hair most anything posted so far will suit you v. well.

garlicbunny · 10/04/2012 14:03

Is yours straight, Fane? As it's fine - and has probably thinned out since having your baby - you could carry off Paltrow's graduated bob. Wait until you've got all your regrowth before thinking about multi-length styles.

Heswall · 10/04/2012 14:09

I do also think your hair goes a bit mental for the first two years after having a baby. Mine is just starting to recover now DS is nearly 2.

And it gets finer/thinner with every child along with many other things IME

FaneFeyre · 10/04/2012 14:10

Yep, really straight. I had the Paltrow bob before and I think it was cute so maybe I'll go for that again... Forgot to say am 28 so don't want mum hair but I think that look is pretty ageless :)

wem · 10/04/2012 14:18

noddy do you cut your hair yourself into that style? How do you go about it?

cybbo · 10/04/2012 15:23

Nodders thsose styles you have linked to are all great but if one's hair has

ANY element of frizz they lose their 'just tumbled out of bed after shagfest

with Damon Albarn' look (which I know you channel ROUND THE CLOCK) and

become 'just been dragged through woods by Joe Pasquale.

So they are harder than they look IYSWIM
