How old is too old to have long hair?

I mean hair past your shoulders, rather than right-down-your-back long. 30? 40? 50? Just wondered what you lot think.

i think if you have good hair then having it long at any age is fine.

dexter73 · 09/04/2012 18:46

I think long hair looks good at any age as long as it is in good condition.

whitelillies · 09/04/2012 18:48

Agree as long as its in good condition and suits you it s fine

TheCrackFox · 09/04/2012 18:57

I don't think the age thing is applicable anymore.

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/04/2012 19:03

Seriously - am just growing mine back down to past shoulders and am nearly 40 apparently.

bringbacksideburns · 09/04/2012 19:04

Jerry Hall's age?

MissGreatBritain · 09/04/2012 19:06

Glad to hear those comments. In my mid early 40s and am trying to grow my hair a bit longer, mainly so I can wear it up more. But I find it quite hard to tell if I'm trying to be mutton dressed as lamb. My hair is coloured a kind of natural-looking brown and is slightly curly, so nothing too "out-there". Thanks for your help everyone, will continue to grow it [busmile]

Totally agree - so long as hair in good condition age is irrelevant

empathyismyname · 09/04/2012 19:10

I think it depends on your style generally. I personally don't think long grey hair is attractive but if you dye it to maintain your original colour and the condition is good you can keep it long indefinitely.

DarrowbyEightFive · 09/04/2012 19:13

YY to being good condition whatever the age. I'm growing my hair long again at the grand old age of 41, it's currently about 18 inches from scalp to tips. I keep it in good condition with rather expensive shampoo and conditioner and don't blow-dry it or wham mousse/hairspray about, but it is dyed (a hopefully natural shade of) reddish-brown. The quality isn't quite as good as when I was 20, but it's still quite nice and shiny. At the point where I start getting lots of broken ends and frizz I'll get it cut back to chin-length bob.

MyleeneCrass · 09/04/2012 19:15

Liz Jones' age.

Seabright · 09/04/2012 19:16

Mine is mid-thigh & I am 41 - is that OK? [bugrin] It's never seen a hair dryer, straightening tongs or been coloured, so am assuming it's condition is pretty good. I don't think it would get to mid-thigh otherwise

EndoplasmicReticulum · 09/04/2012 19:17

My mum tells me I'm too old. I'm 38 and ignoring her.

I'm intending to keep it long, it's easier for me than short as it grows so quickly, and I don't have time or money for haircuts.

It's dyed at the moment (I started going grey at 16) but intend to have long grey hair at some stage. Or long purple hair.

What I don't want is a "nice neat bob", thankyou mum.

ANTagony · 09/04/2012 19:18

My grandmother had the most beautiful long thick hair up to the day she died. It was a rich silver but really thick and healthy. I used to love brushing it and helping her pin sections of it.

OddBoots · 09/04/2012 19:18

I'm 34 and my hair is waist length, it's thick, glossy and not a grey in sight well, (there's one but I pluck it, no more have followed yet!), while it is still thick and healthy I will keep it long although I usually have it in some kind of plait or bun, especially for work.

As long as it's healthy it doesn't matter
I'm mid 30's with natural blonde hair half way down my back and can't imagine it being any other way. It's in good nick though, suits my face shape and whilst my hairdressers still jealous of it - I think I'll be keeping it Grin
DH was convinced I'd chop it off when I had DS but actually I find it less maintenance than a shorter style

mosschops30 · 09/04/2012 19:37

Im growing mine at 36, but have very fine hair. Im sure it would look better if i just kept it in a bob. I need to accept i will never have long bouncy locks.
I do think there comes a point where women should go shorter, but i suppose it depends on hair and style.
Agree Liz Jones looks awful, ditto Helen Mirren with her longer locks looks ancient and haggard, i think Arlene Philips would benefit from shorter locks.

Mind Ruth doodah off this morning looks dire since she had her hair cut, i snigger whenever i see it

Bletchley · 09/04/2012 19:39

About 40. Pamela Stephenson, for example, should get hers cut.

PerryCombover · 09/04/2012 19:40

FamiliesShareGerms · 09/04/2012 19:43

I had waist length hair until my 30th birthday, when I chopped it off (initially to shoulder length, now jaw length). I didn't cut it because I thought I was too old, but because I fancied a change (always had long hair). But I do think that my shorter hair is more flattering - that would depend on face shape etc, though!

Agree about it needing to be in good condition. I wanted to take a pair of scissors to a really thin and scraggy plait I saw today!

Penneyanne · 09/04/2012 19:44

Worst one of all is Hilary Clinton! She looked so much better and far more attractive when her hair was really short. I think short hair really suits some women far more than long hair as they get older but I also agree about Ruth from This Morning-long hair is much nicer on her.

Squitch · 09/04/2012 20:48

I occassionally get comments along the lines of 'when are you getting your hair cut' and mines mid back length and I'm 40 this year. I have NO intention of cutting it (I've been trying to pluck up the courage to have a fringe put in for about 10 years). I am seriously hairdresser phobic, I don't own a hair dryer or straighteners or any of the other hair paraphenalia (sp?) (although I am lucky as it is fine but thick (if you know what I mean) and if i brush it when damp it is poker straight, but if I leave it it has a sort of 'surfer' wave to it) but it is my best feature. It's in lovely condition. I keep it looking up to date and am very good at 'long' styles. My favourite at the moment is a slightly messy fishtail plait to one side.

I think long hair is a real divider of taste. I can't imagine having shorter hair. The shortest my hair has ever been is just past my shoulders and I absolutely hated it.

I also appear to have some sort of brackets fetish - sorry
