I need to get my hair cut but I don't understand technical terms or know what to ask for. I am going to Bluewater to try my luck there so any tips would be gratefully received.

My hair is a good 3 months past its due date for a cut. it is past collar length but I am not bothered whether I have 1/2 inch or 3 inches off. The top and fringe are a mess. I am 40, not attractive and pretty rubbish at hair styling. Lost cause [bugrin].

Search for styles online and take a pic with you on your phone if possible. Or buy a magazine, or just flip through the ones they will have in the salon.

talkingnonsense · 06/04/2012 08:53

I can't think of a single hairdresser at bluewater! Where ate you planning to go?

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 09:09

There is Toni & Guy (rubbish) and a Supercuts (adequate) but I am hoping there might be more or else I will have to leave it.

The best hairdresser I've ever been to - Fresh - is only 20 mins drive from Bluewater in Blackheath. It's an Aveda salon and busy usually but they're brilliant and are very helpful. I'd avoid Toni &
Guy anywhere if you can.

pootlebug · 06/04/2012 12:47

Monkeysmama - do you have a recommendation for a particular stylist at Fresh?

savoycabbage · 06/04/2012 12:52

I always get a magazine and pick something out of that. I am rubbish at hair too. It's all so complicated with the different products and stuff.

monkeysmama · 06/04/2012 13:35

Pootlebug - Charmaine works magic with my long straight hair but I've never heard bad things about any of them.

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 13:40

Had to go to Supercuts. Had a very long wait. Had hair cut. Hairdresser moaned. Hate my hair. [sob]

she moaned? how rude, why?

you sound like you need a hairdresser that listens a bit and suggests certain styles.

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 13:54

I said I had washed it and just brushed it so she could see it in all its craziness. She complained half way through how it was like cutting half way wet and the other half dry but I had said to her she could rewash it if she wanted. She said several times it was really thick. Told me I really need to find the time to straighten it every day and said my fringe was too long. I said I wanted a couple of inches off and she pulled a face. I said I didn't want a bob as I didn't think it suited me, "but you want 2 inches off?" she said. She also pulled a face when I said I was happy to be guided by her as I wasn't very good at doing my hair.

I have come home and straightened it but tbh I feel like crying. It is awful and wonky.

Find a good hairdresser by recommendation and make an appt and talk it through with them about what will work well with your hair in the short term and the longer term.

Sorry to read you're very unhappy with the cut Sad

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 14:07

I might have to go and get it cut again tomorrow.

southeastastra · 06/04/2012 14:14

i wonder if your hair it like mine, really fine and hard to cut right

i found a fab hairdresser, then she left and i'm stuck again! it's really annoying!

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 14:19

ggirltwin2pinot · 06/04/2012 14:42

christ she sounds lovelyHmm

do you have fine hair but lots of it maybe??

if so , layers are you friend

Eliza22 · 06/04/2012 14:46

Bloody cheek! She moaned about your thick hair that she says you MUST make time to straighten? SHE'S IN THE WRONG JOB.

A decent hairdresser will look at your hair and advise you of suitable options. I too have fine hair, pokerstraight and loads of it. I tell my hairdresser what I'd like. He tells me what I'd need to do to have THAT "do" or, gives me less painstaking options to choose from. That's what you need. I live in Cheshire so, no recommendations but please avoid Supercuts from now on. Book in for a consultation prior to your appointment and take pics of any hairstyles you like, to give her an idea of how you're thinking.

southeastastra · 06/04/2012 14:48

you could get a stick on \link{http://www.hothair.co.uk/images/D/fringe-steps.jpg\fringe} instead, i have one Grin

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 15:34

I won't be going again. A different branch is nearer and my kids used to go there until a trainee cut my little boys ear. I didn't know she was a trainee.

you sound so upset, is it really that bad? washing it, then re-styling usually helps...

IDontWantToBeFatAnymore · 06/04/2012 16:32

I will rewash it asap.

pootlebug · 06/04/2012 16:50
