Its probably been asked many times, but which gives the best results. Who' s used what and how'd it turn out? Oh and tips. I have very pale skin, no pigment. So no deep brown please.

I too have tried loads over the years and recently bought the St Moritz one as it was so cheap and wanted to see what it was like - was most impressed.

I also use the Garnier Summerbody stuff in dark - the light are too yellow for me despite being fair skinned.

I buy a box of surgical gloves from the chemist and use these to put the stuff on with - they are cheap and last a long time

ujjayi · 05/04/2012 09:23

bunbaker might be worth another go or try the medium to dark option?

minimammoth I love yoga :). Particularly ashtanga which is great for toning.

HappyGirlNow · 05/04/2012 10:56

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze gel is fab! Sooooo easy to apply evenly, dries really quickly, nice natural colour and isn't expensive.

Minimammoth · 05/04/2012 19:52

Ok. I shall purchase this weekend and report back.

i just bought clarins tan gel heard it doesnt smell or patch, still to test it!

bigpants103 · 05/04/2012 20:53

St Moritz best fake tan I have ever tried. Slap it on with a mit and never get any streaks and love the colour. Only £2.99 and just as good as st tropez and fake bake.

Minimammoth · 05/04/2012 21:01

Jan2011. Do tell us how it goes.

I am very pale too and the only fake tans that have worked for me are Clarins and St Tropez gradual tan in light to medium.

Tuppence2 · 06/04/2012 18:22

Another St Moritz convert here. It's only ever gone wrong once, and that was when I was being lazy and just slapped it on, having not showered Blush where it went over deodorant, it went green!
Other than that you can just slap it on (I also use latex gloves) and I find it helps that it goes on coloured so you can see if you miss anywhere.

LolaAnn · 06/04/2012 21:32

St tropez mousse or st moritz + tanning mit. Both equally great.

Minimammoth · 09/04/2012 13:45

Have made special journey to the duty to buy stuff. Got mitt and St Tropez, cream though not mousse and build up version.( thought I would start with something a little less expensive before committing. So I will do a test patch. Then I' ll be off to the bathroom to prepare. To shed first to get sandpaper for knees and elbows. Will report back.

Tch. Not duty. City. Stupid ipad.

Test patch is working! I definitely look a different colour on that but. Almost normal not my usual nosferatu look.

On that bit. Sigh.

just done the clarins tan this morning. its the instant gel :) very impressed. have tried fake bake, lancome flash bronze and lancaster tans and clarins is better.
i just exfoliated, moisterised and then put it on, no mits or nothing, didn't take that much care when i put it on as i couldn't be bothered lol, and it came out really nice - very subtle and natural, - i put it on my face too and my husband commented that my skin looked nice! (i swear i have had little sleep these days and skin looks awful) and i didn't wear my usual foundation.

however if you want a darker/more noticeable tan, you would have to reapply it and build it up. the best thing about it compared to others is the lack of strong smell on my clothes.

Minimammoth · 09/04/2012 19:43

That sound really good jan. Our town is not v. big. So the place selling Clarins was closed, so had to go for st Tropez, but it was not so expensive but I bet the mousse is easier.

im sure its gorgeous on you :)

choux · 09/04/2012 20:11

I'm a fake tan mixer. I mix L'Oreal Sublime Bronze gel (medium) with Garnier Summerbody - the exact ratio depends on how dark I want to be but usually about 50/50. I then slather on and top up for a few days with Garnier summerbody to maintain / deepen the tan.

I find it never goes streaky, looks natural and is easy to top up with daily Summerbody applications. The trick though it to mix it in a ramekin or small bowl to get it well mixed. You need to make enough to do your whole body as well or you will never get the same ratio when you make a second batch and one arm will be a different shade to the other! Grin

EmptyCrispPackets · 09/04/2012 20:21

Fake bake instant tan in can is brilliant, as you literally spray and can see where it's going. Great colour too.

On offer in boots at mo, think £13 instead of £20

Minimammoth · 09/04/2012 20:22

Oooo that's brave Choux. .
Anyone got any tips on shoulders and back. Where to stop and how to blend? Don't want to to do whole bod. Can't be bothered.

OP posts:
Minimammoth · 09/04/2012 20:24

It was £30 in our boots today ECP. Shock

This is the one - it's £13.66 here www.boots.com/en/Fake-Bake-Beyond-Bronze-Airbrush-Self-Tanner-210ml_1039806/

choux · 09/04/2012 20:37

Not brave at all - i think neither product streaks when used alone and by mixing you are less likely to go too dark / orange in one session.

For my back I have a St tropez back applicator like this

Minimammoth · 10/04/2012 19:57

I am now bathed, exfoliated and have spread stuff on. Does it have to be slathered, I have only put a thin film really. Now nervous.

I am super-pale & freckly.

San Tropez lotion - fab even result & fading, but colour way too orange in daylight. (I looked great indoors if that makes sense?)

San Tropez Mousse - supposed to be easier, went utterly streaky and I was forced to wear long trousers for a week because my legs looked like I'd dripped gravy down them. Apparently this Just Happens to some people who should avoid the mousse (my DP called ST helpline for advice as it was that bad!)

Fake Bake Fair - far and away the best colour for me, but even with exfoliating it was difficult to get totally even coverage. I'd risk it again when I could change my choice of outfit but not for a big day unless i could get it consistently right.

Xen - half-way between. Better colour base than ST but not as believable as FB fair. Easier coverage than FB but fading was patchy. Still have some so considering trying it again as in my experience application is difficult to get right first time with fake tan if you don't know the product.
