Self tan question

Minimammoth · 03/04/2012 20:48

Its probably been asked many times, but which gives the best results. Who' s used what and how'd it turn out? Oh and tips. I have very pale skin, no pigment. So no deep brown please.

I've used cheap and expensive ones and seem to always go back to the Garnier spray for fair to medium skin. There's a face and body tan and I always seem to get a good even coverage that's not too orange. Tipswise, all the usual ones apply (exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate...) and I also always put it on at night so that it develops whilst I'm sleeping.

emsyj · 03/04/2012 21:54

The Lancome Flash Bronze is good - I am very pale and it's a nice colour and not dark. Also Boots No.7 (Not No17!) the spray one in a can is good. I use a Velvo-tan mitt to spread/blend it and both dry really quickly.

I've read good reviews of the Garnier gradual tan one but not used it.

As a self confessed fake tan addict I would undoubtedly recommend St Tropez Bronzing Lotion every-time. Believe me I have tried a staggering amount throughout the years and always go back to this. Its quite intense for those with paler skins however so would only really try this if you have a yellower base skin tone.

TheCraicDealer · 03/04/2012 23:35

St Tropez have launched a new range for people with fair skin who just want a bit of a glow. Might be worth a wee look

Naturals Self Tan

whackamole · 04/04/2012 01:21

The St Tropez mousse is very good, although strong smelling.

St Moritz, super cheap but really very good. Just exfoliate a lot, then some more, then moisturise. You can buy one of those velvety mitt things - I would - they are brill.

TheCraicDealer · 04/04/2012 01:40

Ooh yes, get a mitt, they avoid orange-palm syndrome. Just make sure you fake tan your hands though (especially in-between fingers), otherwise you'll look like you're wearing gloves [waves]

I do not recommend St Moritz though- it turned my best friend and another girl I worked with green. I shit you not. There's a reason why that stuff is so cheap!

Minimammoth · 04/04/2012 07:02

Thanks for the suggestions. Can I get a tan mitt in boots.? Anyone tried the Clarins tanning mousse. Will avoid St Moritz.

Is it for face/arms or legs or all over. I can't be arsed doing top half anymore. I used Dove on my legs; two coats on consecutive nights.

Minimammoth · 04/04/2012 07:54

Am thinking legs and possibly arms shoulders.

Do some practice runs before any big nights out! Hands, underarms and bingo wing areas can all be tricky.

MistyMountainHop · 04/04/2012 08:02

another st moriz devotee here! its brilliant, and IMO just as good as st tropez / fake bake etc

but you MUST exfoliate beforehand. thoroughly.

and use a mitt.

4aminsomniac · 04/04/2012 08:32

I've bought Fake Bake, after a recommendation on here, and it is brilliant! The most natural looking tan I've ever seen, and so easy to apply right.

MistyMountainHop · 04/04/2012 09:33

yeah fake bake is fab but its expensive :(

SephoraRosebud · 04/04/2012 11:02

St Tropez self tan is very natural looking for pale skin but I'm sure you could get something cheaper that is just as good if you want to fake tan regularly.

whackamole · 04/04/2012 12:57

Really?! I'm surprised - St Moritz is the only one that doesn't go orange on me - I think maybe because the others are warmer toned.

Minimammoth · 04/04/2012 19:22

Is the spray better than cream or mousse to apply? I am afraid over going over some bits and undergoing others. Just not very confident or competent.

OP posts:
emsyj · 04/04/2012 19:52

I prefer a spray just because it dries faster - I think a mousse is harder to spread, but it's a personal thing so you need to have a go and see what you find easiest to use.

I find it easiest to do one part at a time - so one leg, then the other leg, then arms, then belly, then back, then face and backs of hands. I normally sit or stand on a big old bath towel and concentrate on misting evenly all over the relevant area, then use the mitt to blend all over that part before moving on to the next bit. Make sure you're completely dry before dressing.

Bunbaker · 04/04/2012 20:08

I bought some San Tropez for fair skin and it did precisely nothing for me.

Minimammoth · 04/04/2012 20:59

Did you find anything that worked Bunbaker? Don't want to spend loads of dosh on a product that doesn't work.

OP posts:
angelinterceptor · 04/04/2012 21:03

I love St Tropez mousse.
It's really easy to apply and I'm not even that particular with exfoliating etc.
It dries really quickly and not streaky.

Bit smelly though but worth it.

Bunbaker · 05/04/2012 07:15

I'm watching this thread for other recommendations.

ujjayi · 05/04/2012 07:31

I am pale skinned and use St Tropez Everyday Gradual Tanner for fair skin. I only use the medium to dark if I already have a good natural tan to maintain the colour (I would feel too self conscious suddenly appearing bronzed!) I have had so many streaky leg incidents with full-on fake tan that I prefer the slow build up. I apply for two consecutive days and then every other day thereafter. Boots usually do a special offer around this time of year so worth looking out for.

Bunbaker · 05/04/2012 07:38

That's the one I bought ujjayi. Perhaps I should persevere with it and use it every day for a week. I put some on my legs two days running and it made no difference whatsoever.

Minimammoth · 05/04/2012 08:36

I think a gradual tanner would be better for me I am very very pale . Interesting name you have Ujjayi(spelt right too) are you a yoga fan perchance?

OP posts:
Minimammoth · 05/04/2012 08:38

I have only ever tried the garnier cream, is the smell similar?
