DD (14) wants belly button piercing - would you say yes?

my thinking is that its her body, and in the great scheme of things its not that bad, (i would have felt quite differently had she asked for a tongue piercing for instance....on that i would say NO) Plus i absolutely do not want her to sneak off and get this done behind my back....not that i believe she would. She is well behaved and not a difficult teen by any stretch.

i had booked her into a tattoo/piercing parlour, but when i arrived there was a sign on the door saying they were closed today Hmm

so, thought i would take the opportunity to find out what others think and ask those with pierced belly buttons if they regret it?

cheers

No, sorry I'd wait till 16, but I'm so old fashioned I'm making my dd wait to get her ears done
Expect others will dusagree

Hebiegebies · 03/04/2012 16:43

Disagree sorry :)

noddyholder · 03/04/2012 16:46

I would say no. My friend had the mother of all infections from one and she is an adult who looked after it properly. Also young girls don't need adornment they are already beautiful. I think they look cheap sorry

Karbea · 03/04/2012 16:47

No I definitely wouldn't.

nickelhasababy · 03/04/2012 16:47

"you can have it done at 18. and you can pay for it yourself"

KristinaM · 03/04/2012 16:48

What hebiegebies said. But if you are ok with her getting it done, i dont see what the problem is. its not like its visible most of the time

nickelhasababy · 03/04/2012 16:48

(i also know 3 people who got bad infections. 1 didn't look after it, but the other 2 did, properly)

Jackstini · 03/04/2012 16:48

No - I would wait a couple more years.
I have a couple of friends with bits of scar tissue and they regret it.
Maybe at 16 she can make the decision. Hopefully at 14 she has not got her belly out too much anyway?

TheMonster · 03/04/2012 16:49

No.

HandMadeTail · 03/04/2012 16:50

I have a tattoo, which I have had for over 20 years, which I sort of regret now, but, surely with a piercing, you can just remove the jewellery if you don't want to draw attention to it.

If you have gone through the hygiene with her, and trust her to look after it, then why not?

McQueasy · 03/04/2012 16:50

Hi, I had it done at 14 and it grew out so that by the time I was 18 I had to get tiny bars from a special retailer cause nothing else would fit.
This is probably a more persuasive argument

Clownsarescary · 03/04/2012 16:50

Non

LaVitaBellissima · 03/04/2012 16:50

I regret having mine pierced, loved it when I was younger. I'm back to a size 10 after having twins but the scar from the piercing looks terrible!
I can text you a photo if you think it will help Grin

DurhamDurham · 03/04/2012 16:50

My dd2 is 14 and she has hers pierced, I caved in much earlier than with dd1 as I made her wait until she was 16! It doesn't bother me as long as they know they have to keep it clean and hygienic. Most of the time it's covered up so it's much mre preferable to me than facial/tingue piercings.

Eggsits · 03/04/2012 16:50

Another here who will not let DD have her ears done until 16, so a definite no from me.

ClaireFromWork · 03/04/2012 16:51

No. Not until she's 16 and she pays for it. I'd be tempted to show her pics online of ones that have gone gammy but I'm a meany like that.

violetwellies · 03/04/2012 16:51

No no no no no no no. I worked with a girl who was permanently disabled following infection from a belly button piercing, she went from being a fit active independent person to an incontinent wheelchair user dependent on family and paid carers for all her personal care.

NettoSuperstar · 03/04/2012 16:52

I would.
I have mine done, plus various other piercings.

BreeVanDerTramp · 03/04/2012 16:53

I had mine pierced at 14 with my mothers permission. I have not yet turned into a cider swigging, drug taking wild party animal and infant have allowed the piercing to close over since having DS1 as it looked hideous with my strechmarks

If she is mature enough to look after it I would say yes, I used contact lens cleaner to aid healing.

BreeVanDerTramp · 03/04/2012 16:54

Infant? In fact Blush

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/04/2012 16:54

That must be pretty rare though Violet surely.

I had mine done years ago and didn't like it so just took it out.

I'd rather my DD didn't do it when she was 14 but well there are bigger battles to fight I guess.

Mopswerver · 03/04/2012 16:55

No. At any age. Heard all sorts of nightmare stories including one about 2 yrs ago where teenage girl was in crash in Spain. The pressure on her abdomen (pierced naval) caused a ruptured spleen.

Meglet · 03/04/2012 16:56

Not at 14. Wait until 18.

I had mine done when I was 20 at a fab place in London (Into You). It healed really well, IIRC they gave me a herbal lentil weavery lotion to help it heal. No salt water and certainly nothing strong on it. It came out after 13 years when I was very pregnant, the scar isn't very big TBH.

I chipped my tooth on my toungue piercing (so it was only in there for 6 months). And I still have a small hole from my lip peircing even though it came out 9 yrs ago, although it doesn't bother me.

Byeckerslike · 03/04/2012 16:58

I went to have mine done at abouy 19/20 and passed out before she got anywhere near me with the needle, didnt get it done and am very very glad now as scars i have seen are hideous.

I did however have my tongue pierced about 4 years later, kept it for about 3/4 years then removed it, no scar, not that i am saying encourage her to do that... In fact not sure what the hell i am blathering on about...

In short, no i wouldn't Grin

doctordwt · 03/04/2012 16:59

I've got one.

I'd point out to her that if she has it while she's still growing, it might grow out. Better to wait until 16 really.
