Calling all apples! What to wear when you've a big tum and no bum...

I was just reading another thread about jeans for apples, and noticed one person suggested dresses. I am dying to know which style of dresses since Dressipi has let me down and suggested shift dresses, which I know always cling badly around the tummy and make me look fat.
So, here's my question: fellow apple shaped girls, what makes you look great?

Oooh I'm joining for help. After a few 'congratulations, when's it due?' comments, I am now loosing weight but I'm well aware that I've still got a 4/5 month pregnant-looking tummy.

I tend to get out of the house in the morning but not turning sideways on to the mirror :)

I need to buy a new wardrobe and am suffering for two reasons:

  1. I am humoungous on top. We're talking a 34-K here.
  2. I need workwear. The fashion seems to be to tuck shirts in. This only shows off the tummy. I have no idea how to look smart without doing this so tend to stick to dresses.
  3. I live in a conservative muslim country. Skirts above the knee and low cut tops are no nos. With me nearly everything ends up looking low cut! I'm loving a lot of dressing I'm seeing but most are too short (annoying as I have the apple legs and wish I could get them out)

Any tips? Particuarly anything I can order online?

helloitsme · 04/04/2012 07:01

hi bedubabe. I don't have all the answers, but could you wear shorter dresses with trousers/jeans underneath. I have seen more conservative girls doing that where i live and it seems to work. And of course focus on great shoes :)

Hmm thanks hello, good plan. Does anyone know where I can get apple-friendly trousers? I.e. something with a bit of stretch in it that I won't have to keep hoiking up every five mins (which is not an attractive meeting look).

Stresstoimpress · 05/04/2012 20:49

Help needed please apples! I am going to a wedding. Have a fuchsia sequin tunic dress and can't decide what to wear with as a bit too short for tights. So choices are either white or navy? And wide leg or crop

chelliebellie · 05/04/2012 22:09

Ooh, I have nothing to wear at all for a wedding, so any help (really I mean suggestions) would be really really great!!!!!!

Not sure that I'm the right person to answer you stresstoimpress but I'd probably go for white crop.

Stresstoimpress · 05/04/2012 22:12

Thanks chillies. Think you're right and silver wedges, jewellery and bag.

Other choice is a maxi with shrug thing. Both are in sale on simply be

maydaychild · 05/04/2012 22:31

Just so glad I found you all
Made me feel a whole bunch better about myself!

Can we be one of those regular groups of MN like the nobdies?

CrunchyFrog · 06/04/2012 09:28

I think I'm apple, although I have very broad shoulders.

I am a size 10-12 mostly, can do a size 8 in hipsters and need a 14 in fitted tops.

I mostly wear leggings or skinnies, long vest tops (several) and a long cotton cardy. And cardigan not-uggs.

PinotCantDoEasterNamesSoGaveUp · 06/04/2012 11:38

ooh good thread.

I wear tea dresses, wrap dresses and A line skirts with fitted tops. I don't think you should go baggy with an apple shape - you just need balance.

Ooh yeah. Balance not baggy.

ggirltwin2pinot · 06/04/2012 13:51

christ pinot are you an apple as well??
should've guessed really

SweetieDoesIt · 06/04/2012 15:39

I love wearing dresses for work but have a massive issue with tights. Do any other apples struggle with tights? Specifically the elastic at the top digging into your none waist giving terrible muffin top?

Any brands of tights that don't give this cut in half look?

Best jeans I ever had fit wise were from Peacocks! I have spent a fortune in the past on mistake jeans and these were only £12.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 06/04/2012 19:25

Can we have a bit more detailchellie? What size are you? What do you like to flaunt?
I would love to try a shirt dress and a tea dress. I'm 5ft2 and need it to be knee length or slightly above. I like to show off my pins Smile
I have 34F boobs, a big wobbly tum and no arse.
Yes yes yes to starting our own apple quiche.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 06/04/2012 19:31

stress I'm always too afraid to wear any colour leggings other than black so I don't know. Can we have a link to the dress?

My buy of the week apples is this lovely next tunic in navy which looks lovely with leggings and tan flat knee boots now and will look good with denim crops or shorts in the warmer weather. It's lovely, cheap and comes in petite too.

helloitsme · 06/04/2012 19:47

am i completely clueless? Who are the nobdies?
But yes yes yes to a ongoing apple bonanza! I love it!
Having said tha, i'v not much to add to the thread right now, except to say that i wore my brand new calvin klein high waisted straight leg jeans today and was heavily complimented. I have not worn high waisted stuff since i was at school though (rather a long time ago) and i was reminded of the uncomfortable sensation of the waistband digging in right at my fattest bit. This doesn't feel good and makes me feel i need to loose weight....not sure what to do as the look was food, but the feel wasn't, and yes, they are the right size....
(feel compelled to add that the ck jeans were heavily discounted and i got them for a tenner, Grin)
loved 'balance not baggy' by the way :)

Have you got a link to the jeans please Hello - I'd like a nice pair of straight legged jeans for summer. I think I'm an apple - 5'7", size 10, 8 on a really good day but those days are becoming less frequent, small of boob and a tummy that looks about 5 months pregnant - it really is the bane of my life! Mid to high waists are great - got lovely Seven Gwendoline skinnies which I have worn with boots all winter but think straight legged jeans would be good for spring/summer.

chelliebellie · 06/04/2012 21:59

Hi All,
Well, I'm 5'4", a size 14 and still look 6 months pregnant! (my son is nearly 2.5)
The other problem I have is that I have eczema and operation scars on my legs, so I can't always go for a shorter dress.

It's lovely to have some fellow apples to discuss clothes with! I hate it when my friends tell me to 'try a belt' - you'd think they would have learnt by now!

(oh and I'm glad that someone else asked who nobodies are - I haven't a clue!)

chelliebellie · 06/04/2012 22:02

Oops predictive text changed nobdies! Stupid phone!

ViolaCrayola · 06/04/2012 22:06

SweetieDoesIt - I have the same problem with tights, but I hunt high and low for those with a soft waistband - these do not cut in and can actually smooth everything down very nicely!

Not any particular brand to recommend, have had success with v expensive (Wolfords) and cheap (Boots). I think not buying them too small helps a lot - I get a medium even though technically I'm probably a small. I try to look at the waistband before I buy them! Leggings are also better for this I find.

Stresstoimpress · 06/04/2012 22:30

Musttidy Link is [simplybe.co.uk] then search vx360ci. Sorry cant get direct link to work.

Actual thing is much more fuchsia and shorter than pic. Plus I am much older than model!! Am now thinking nt the right thing...... other options also simply be but vx354ci but think that's too casual aaaaaaah

chelliebellie · 06/04/2012 22:45

I like the fuchsia top, but I Also like the dress. I'd be a bit worried that the dress is too casual because it's jersey, but it might be worth getting to see how it looks first.

What about this? Pk261st

ninah · 06/04/2012 22:47

marks space
millie you have described my build only i have a shelf of boobage

chelliebellie · 06/04/2012 22:54

stresstoimpress why are you not sure about the fuchsia top? It would help with any suggestions.

I guess you could also dress the dress up (iykwim) with a short jacket and accessories??

musttidyupmusttidyup · 07/04/2012 08:07

stress I like both options but also the tunic chellie suggested. I think it depends on the kind of wedding and when it is. I would think the first more eveningy /for cooler weather. The maxi dress more summery and I think the jersey is fine if you dress it up. The tunic chellie found would be lovely for a fresh spring wedding and looks great in the pic with white linen trs and a nice clutch.

Stresstoimpress · 07/04/2012 10:20

Ok so I think the maxi is too casual have tried dressing up but doesn't really work. But have another party I will keep for and hol in turkey.

Tunic is lovely but too short for me to wear with tights (I Would look like mutton) so if wear trousers not sure what colour and think may not look "weddingy" enough.

Chellies idea lovely but can't wear taupe - look like I have lost all my red blood cells
