Volumising root powder?

LtheWife · 26/03/2012 14:14

I have very fine, flat hair that no amount of volumising shampoo, conditioner, spray or mousse makes the slightest bit of difference to. I can get the tiniest bit of volume by using mousse and root lifting type sprays and drying my hair upside down, but within 5 minutes it's completely limp and flat again. I keep on hearing about how wonderful volumising root powders are. Has anyone tried them? Do they work or are they just another waste of money?

According to my hair dresser it is nothing short of miraculous!

Mrsrobertduvall · 26/03/2012 15:00

I use one called space dust from the hairdressers...no idea who makes it. Its very good and lasts ages.

ggirltwin2pinot · 26/03/2012 15:07

Oooh am v interested in this ..will be watching this thread

christ not another purchase I will be making courtesy of the S&B threads!

LolaAnn · 26/03/2012 15:19

I have the same kind of hair, and have a little red shaker of volumising powder from my HD, it is some kind of amazing - although the texture of it-- yeeeeeech. I find I can now achieve a similar effect with just bastiste dry shampoo.

Catsmamma · 26/03/2012 15:21

oh yes....i use one occasionally, only the name of it has gone completely out of my head

it's by otis ....although now i have written that i think i have made it up. ...must be the same as lolaann 's as it is a small red shaker pot

Catsmamma · 26/03/2012 15:23

and whaddya know....as soon as i posted I remembered!!

It is Dust It by Osis

it does make your hair feel freaky though.....tooth curlingly freaky but it looks amazing!

LtheWife · 26/03/2012 15:57

Looks like it might be worth giving it a go then! Although I'm curious lola, what do you do with the batiste to get the same effect? I've got a can of batiste in the bathroom, I can't say I've ever noticed a volumising effect from using it though.

Have you tried root crimping. If your hair isn't too thin and doesn't have short layers it can work well and lasts.

Mrsrobertduvall · 26/03/2012 17:07

Oh yes mine is the rd pot too.
Do not under any circumstances put too much on.

AlpinePony · 26/03/2012 17:13

Fuck no! :(

My hairdresser did this to me a few weeks ago and my beautiful soft, fine, shiny hair felt like it was on the bad end of UHU dreadlocks. Shiteous stuff.

I'm currently using heated rollers, ten times better.

It took two washes to get that vile gunk out of my hair.

LtheWife · 26/03/2012 17:21

Ok, now I'm wondering what happens if you put too much on, as that sounds like quite a stern warning! Does it not just look a little powdery like too much dry shampoo?

I had thought about root crimping, but a magically volumising product sounds quicker lazier?

LtheWife · 26/03/2012 17:29

Oh, that doesn't sound so good Alpine. A little freaky, or slighty yeuch doesn't sound too bad, but UHU dreadlocks?! Hmmm.

Unfortunately heated rollers do sod all, my hair doesn't hold any kind of curl either. Heated rollers, tongs, wands, ribbon curls with straighteners, pin curls and setting lotion, no matter what I do it's flat and poker straight again within an hour at the most. I've had my hair short, long, mid length, layer, no layers, nothing seems to make the slightest bit of difference. Even back combing falls out as it's so fine and slippery!

A small amount is helpful in giving it a bit of va-voom but too much and it's like having sticky flour in your hair - I think is combines with any grease to make a horrible paste.

I use it occasionally - eg before a night out if I washed my hair in the morning and it's gone a bit flat. Wouldn't use very day and you definitely need to wash it out the next morning.

I will be watching this thread with interest. I am obsessed with getting volume in my hair and i am obsessed with other peoples hair, the thicker the better. I am seriously thinking of getting a wig to stop the faffing of trying to achieve what i havent got and never will have.

I would like to try a very expensive wig in the hope it wouldnt be hot or itchy but i have absolutely no idea where to start.

twolittlemonkeys · 26/03/2012 17:37

VO5 do a really good one, it's only about £4 in the supermarket. Small bottle but you don't need much. It's fab!

DeepThought · 26/03/2012 17:38

have you all tried the babyliss big hair? tresemme I think do one too

Mrsrobertduvall · 26/03/2012 17:39

It makes me cough too as it's a very fine powder and gets in your throat.
But honestly, it works!!!!!

LtheWife · 26/03/2012 17:57

chipstick I find wigs are so much easier to style (worked with them as part of a hair and makeup course). Pin it on to form, wet it, style it, bake it in a low oven to set, brush out and do final styling and stick it on.

But even expensive handmade wigs are uncomfortable. Imagine wrapping your hair as flat to your head as you can, pinning it in place, sticking something akin to the toe end of a pair of tights on top, add more pins, put on wig, add more pins.

That said, once upon a time I made facial hair for a living so have the necessary skills to make my own wig. One day I will get round to it so I can have glam hair for special occasions.

LolaAnn · 27/03/2012 23:23

yes catsmamma that's the one.
I have really long hair, so I brush my hair upside down and then grab it into a ponytail and pull straight up above my head in a jedward-esque style and spray the daylights out of my root area. Quick tousle with my fingers and that's it. Doesn't last long but does help.

TheCraicDealer · 28/03/2012 00:28

Tres Semme and Schwarzkopf also do them (Tesco), they're only 3-4 quid and do the same job as the £10 Otis stuff. I only use it for nights out too, I can't imagine what your hair would be like after a week's worth of repeated applications! I usually wash my hair, dry it and then put it in rollers which I take off after doing my makeup. Then lift layers of your hair and sprinkle this stuff on, fluffing as you go.

Baptiste have just started doing a dry shampoo which gives volume as well...not a repeat buy. Basically has the dusty-stuff in it along with the dry shampoo, but it goes all over your hair (not just the roots) with the aerosol spray. I find it a complete nightmare to get out of my hair, even though those dusty things wash out first time

CalamityKate · 28/03/2012 00:36

Dust It powder is brilliant, but expensive.

Schwartzkopf (who make it) do a cheaper one that I forget the name of but it's in Tesco and it's about 3 quid I think. DP got me some for Xmas and it's just as good as Dust It.

I can also recommend the Babyliss Root Boost, that gives you little crimps in the root of the hair.

I've got very very fine hair but a combination of powder and the Root Boost mean I have to turn sideways to get through doors Grin

BTW the powder does tend to build up after a while because normal shampoos can sometimes struggle to get it out, so from time to time I use a clarifying shampoo.

pluckingupcourage · 28/03/2012 03:46

chipstick have you thought about hairpieces rather than a full wig?

Am watching this thread with interest as I need something which will work. I am also considering the root boost crimping irons ...

AlpinePony · 28/03/2012 06:30

wifey given your previous skills, go with an 'evening' facial hair adornment! Nobody but nobody will be looking at your roots if you had swarovski crystals in your beard! ;)

I've been using the lee stafford dry shampoo which gives my roots a boost without the gluey feeling.

LtheWife · 28/03/2012 12:16

Oh yes Alpine a Swarovski encrusted beard must be the answer! Perhaps I can do a matching merkin and hobbit toes for REALLY special occassions that require the full top to toe treatment. DH will love it! Wink

Seeing as they get mixed reactions I think I'll pick up one of the cheap powders and see just how horrid the texture is.
