Wedding outfit (& I am the bride!)

OK, your challenge for Fri afternoon...
I'm getting married in 8 wks and have to buy an outfit. Me & dp are both 2nd timers so v low key. But I still want to look fab - just not bridal.
I thought a trouser suit because I never wear dresses - any ideas what/colours/where to buy/how to accessorise? (preferably so it doesn't look like I am the registrar!)
(BTW I'm 5'7", 12st, not bad nick on top half but decidedly untoned abs & big of hip...)

Monsoon and Designers at Debenhams are the places to go!

nailpolish · 03/02/2006 15:42

i 2nd what compo says

maybe you could even try the personal shopper at debenhams? be bold and go for it. they will love helping you with your big day

enjoy and congratulations on you forthcoming wedding xx

Caligula · 03/02/2006 15:42

Oh get yerself a meringue!

Not really.

East also has lovely stuff sometimes

MrsBadger · 03/02/2006 15:44

NB you will never be mistaken for the registrar unless you actually wear polyester - I have never seen one who I would consider well dressed! Glamourous hairthings will also help.

compo · 03/02/2006 15:44

Kaliko has nice weddingy stuff too. I guess a cream suit or similar would make you look weddingy and not like the registrar. Try to avoid dark colours. Accessorize has lovely jewelry and pretty sequinned bags to make you look glamourous. Are you going to have your hair and makeup professionally done at home?

compo · 03/02/2006 15:46

something like this? Although not sure it comes with trousers. How about the skirt or dress with it?

doggiesayswoof · 03/02/2006 15:47

Monsoon scares me...I am such a crap shopper! It always looks like it's full of slightly weird stuff. Maybe I will have to be brave and have another look. Actually thinking about it I've not been in there since about 1996

if your guests follow the don't wear white to a wedding rule, I guess it follows that you should wear white/ivory/cream if you want to avoid the horror of wearing the same thing as one of your guests .

what is your colouring? and how old are you (if you don't mind my asking!)?

compo · 03/02/2006 15:49

I got my wedding outfit from Monsson. It was a cream skirt, sequinned top and a bolero. Didn't cost more than £150 and everyone loved it!!

doggiesayswoof · 03/02/2006 15:50

lol Mrs Badger - you are so right about the poly mix suits.

compo I am going to get hair done - haven't decided about make up yet. Nails definitely.

Your link just came up with the homepage btw, what's it called and I will do a search on the monsoon site?

CMoon I am 33 and quite pale with mid-brown hair. It's a good point about the guests, I hadn't thought of it!

Doggie I went and had a personal shopper (at Selfridges) for my wedding outfit - it was fab. I told him I wanted a trouser suit and to look like Bianca Jagger and that's (kind of) what I ended up with. But he also got me to try on loads fo different things and the suit i ended up wearing was one I would never have picked off the rail but really suited me.

I'd really recommend it - he helped me find shoes as well - it was fabulous.

I got married in Feb and trousers were definitely a good idea!

SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 15:56

Go to Monsoon and search for SONNA

doggiesayswoof · 03/02/2006 16:00

Lovely SDragon. Would quite like something I can wear again although that's always a tricky one - if you can wear it again without looking overdressed it's probably not that fabulous to start with.

puddle liking the personal shopper idea. sounds fun. hmmmm...

CarolinaMoon · 03/02/2006 16:03

the sonna one is lovely. I like the georgia short jacket, but it comes with a dress rather than trousers - pretty embroidery on it though. You could maybe wear knee boots with it if the material isn't too fine.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:05

I think you'd certainly get away with the trousers again - add a coloured top instead.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:06

Sonna is in my favourite fabric too - silk/linen is absolutely gorgeous.

doggiesayswoof · 03/02/2006 16:07

The georgia jacket and dress are really lovely. CM what colour boots would you go for if the fabric could stand up to boots?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:09

Silk linen has the weight of cotton really. It's quite a "solid" fabric but soft and supple and lovely...

doggiesayswoof · 03/02/2006 16:11

Right that's it I'm going to monsoon! I don't think I've ever seen this silk linen stuff you speak of! sounds really nice though.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:11

The embroidery might make the dress look too delicate for boots though.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:12

I may have to go and snuggle up to the silk linen items in my wardrobe in a minute

doggiesayswoof · 03/02/2006 16:13

Yes I wondered about that sd. Also boots just don't seem weddingy somehow. Need to try it on with some different shoes I think.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:14

Monsoon do shoes too...

SoupDragon · 03/02/2006 16:15

You'd need a big branch I think.
