Don't want to look old!

Don't keep up with high fashion necessarily though - if I don't like it, I don't follow it so I haven't worn boots tucked into jeans which I think looks ludicrous and I won't be wearing skinny jeans as they wouldn't suit me. Also none of those sparkly horrible shrug things in my wardrobe either.

Mascaraohara · 03/02/2006 12:04

I like to keep up to date
I like to look nice
I like to make the most of my appearance
I love materials
I like compliments
I am superficial and shallow
Buying something new and different makes me feel good

Oh and I forgot to add that I do feel, rightly or wrongly, that appearence is important in todays society and we do (whether we want to or not) get judged on our appearance at so many levels.

Twiglett · 03/02/2006 12:06

we used to call 'skinny jeans' drainpipes

Happy Birthday btw!

GDG · 03/02/2006 12:08

That's right Twig - back in teh days when my legs were like sticks and I could get away with them!

JackieNo · 03/02/2006 12:09

Try to be vaguely stylish, but due to vast lardiness can't really do 'fashion'. But I am fascinated by it, and I do love reading Vogue, because it's so unrealistic and so far away from the way I live. It's a bit of escapism, where I can imagine that I might one day buy that £400 dress or whatever, knowing damn well that spending more than about £40 on anything frightens me.

MrsBadger · 03/02/2006 12:12

because I unrealistically think that one day I'll come across the item of clothing that will transform me into an Utter Goddess and the world will fall at my feet

hasn't happened yet, but I keep trying

Actually my new coat-and-boots combo makes me feel tall and confident, if not actually a goddess, so perhaps I'm on the way.

serenity · 03/02/2006 12:15

But you can look nice, without being fashionable though. Surely it's better to dress for your shape/colouring/life style than just wear something because it's 'in'? An example of that has to be those god awful tiered gipsy skirts last year. Flarey, elastic waisted skirts look good on very few people over the age of 14!

I get narked with it because I find that if you don't suit a certain trend, you tend to be b*ggered shopping wise. I haven't been able to get a reasonably priced T shirt for a few years now - all too short and too fitted. I can't wait for the belly button backlash tbh

I shall watch this thread with interest......

SorenLorensen · 03/02/2006 12:15

Is it that you have no interest in clothes, twig, or that you don't like shopping for them? ie., if someone delivered to your house a new wardrobe of fab new stuff that all fitted would you be pleased or would you just carry on wearing the clothes you'd got?

SorenLorensen · 03/02/2006 12:18

I love clothes but I don't follow fashion, really - I mean, I think I look quite 'now' (pmsl) but I wouldn't buy something trendy for the sake of it - only if it suited me.

OK, I did buy a poncho....and a Baker Boy hat...but I didn't wear them...so that's alright.

I didn't have a white gypsy skirt last summer. I think I was one of only three woman in Cheshire who didn't.

I have long skirts - just not long gypsy skirts. I am not doing skinny jeans (famous last words).

But you can care about fashion without having to buy all of the latest trends.. I've never owned a gypsy skirt, metallic ..., baker boy hat, this time round 80's fashion or a poncho but I would still say that I am fashionable. Perhaps just not mainstream, I know what suits me and what doesn't (I think) and I make it work for 'me' iykwim.

I admit to skinny jeans and boots but only cos dp practically wet his pants when he saw me in them.

serenity · 03/02/2006 12:29

Definitely don't get the shoe thing. All my shoes (well mainly boots actually) are black, and get replaced when they fall apart. Really can't imagine buying shoes for fun!

Twiglett · 03/02/2006 12:30

I get intimidated easily by rails of clothes .. which is why I like personal shoppers

I like to look nice but feel constantly fat and what I imagine I will look like in clothes never panns out in the mirror

If I had my size 10 or 12 body back I think I'd be more interested

but yes Moo .. if someone delivered fab clothes that all looked fab and were functional (ie I could chase a toddler) I'd love it

I'm with the marmite-flavoured snack product on this. I sorta care about finding things that suit me, but they also have to be machine-washable, toddler-friendly (no skirts! I sit on the floor all the time etc.), etc etc.

In theory, I am meant to be buying a new wardrobe. I promised DH I would get myself a bunch of clothes I actually loved etc etc and throw out all the clothes I hate but still wear. But I need to work out what size I'm going to be, once post-baby weight has settled down.

I did see a Chloe blouse in a supplement this weekend that looked great but then I'm a sucker for black with largish white polka dots, for no apparent reason.

puff · 03/02/2006 14:24

I've always loved fashion, cosmetics, perfume and all things girlie.

In the last few years I completely lost interest in myself and put on shedloads of weight. Then struggled to find anything that looked decent on me and became even more miserable, so took myself in hand and worked on losing the weight.

Getting interested in all the girlie things again is a sign to me that I have come through a very difficult few years and am taking an interest in the more frivolous things in life again .
