I like the way people dress in edinburgh. I'm early 30s, 3 children, lost my sense of style and living in jeans and jumpers. round this part of the world mum uniform (boden) is pretty standard.... and no good shops here either.

Whistles? Warehouse?

Trills · 18/03/2012 17:56

Sign up at Dressipi - you put in your measurements and it recommends clothes to suit your shape.

If you sped a bit of time clicking "like" and "dislike" then it will start to show you things that you actually like, as well.

Because it has your measurements it will tell you what size you should be in shops that you haven't shopped in before, so you can feel more confident to buy things from online shops that you don't know, which deals with the "my town has no good shops" problem (this of course only works if shops are honest when they say "a size 10 will have a 28 inch waist" or whatever).

I promise I don't work for them, but I do know some people who work for them (full disclosure).

meowchut · 18/03/2012 17:58

Cos? It's now online, same company as H&M so the sizeing is similar. You can be stylish in jeans and jumpers btw. I like Toast too but it's out of my price range. To be honest everything is out of my price range :)

novelsituation · 18/03/2012 17:59

Anthropologie, Reiss, Jigsaw, French Connection, Whistles?

I love Edinburgh and am there at least twice a month. What is it you like in particular about the way people dress in Edinburgh?

meowchut · 18/03/2012 18:09

I had high hopes of dressipi and spent ages clicking my likes and dislikes but have found it disappointing to say the least. A whole load of frumpy clothing and items that I know would look dreadful on me. Maybe you will be luckier?

I also like muji for jeans and uniqlo for basic ts and jumpers.

Francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2012 18:12

Another vote for Cos. it looks great, though I aven't seen it in RL, so no idea if it's really good quality

Sockspence · 18/03/2012 18:35

oh I really want to like Dressipi but it's throw up some horrors for me Confused If I've put in Cos, Marc Jacobs and Whistles as brands I like, why would I like a naice sensible crinkle midi from Windsmoor? Ew!

Trills · 18/03/2012 18:44

Just hit "dislike" a lot and give it some time - it doesn't know you yet.

dexter73 · 18/03/2012 18:44

I'm intrigued about how people dress in Edinburgh!

dexter73 · 18/03/2012 18:46

I'm imagining kilts and aran jumpers!

tunaday · 18/03/2012 18:49

Dont care much for these places either. I mix and match from Mango, Zara, Topshop, gap, All Saints (mainly their sales as bit pricy for me).

TheScottishPlayer · 18/03/2012 19:07

I live in Edinburgh - I had no idea we all dress so well Grin

Nevertooearlyforcake · 18/03/2012 19:15

Fuck, I live in Edinburgh and have just realised have managed to end up head to toe in Joules today Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/03/2012 19:16

Cos only good if you are tall and straight up and down. It's frightful for short, curvy people like me.

Unfortunately, I hate nearly everything everywhere at the moment. Walked around today just looking for basics and found nothing at all.

If you live in jeans and jumpers, why not just get some really nice jeans and some really nice jumpers?

What DO people in Edinburgh dress like? Last time I was there it was pissing down and everybody was in raincoats.

AllPastYears · 18/03/2012 19:23

I live in Edinburgh, and am sitting here in a Fat Face hoodie - OP, you obviously haven't seen me then!

bigTillyMint · 18/03/2012 19:26

Remus, I am tall and relatively slim, but Cos stuff never seems to suit me eitherGrin Or it looks too dull!

Somethingwicked · 19/03/2012 10:43

brillant, loads of good tips there.

Edinburgh seems to me to be full of lots of colourful framed sunglasses, 50s skirts, vintage clothes, I don't know really, women look just more up my street really, though I haven't worn a skirt since the toddler phase first came in 4 years ago...would love to start up again. Shops mentioned below, the clothes just don't look right on me and feel too grown up maybe. Looks great on other people though, no criticism of it for all you boden devotees, its just not me.

Will definitely try websites for all the shops you mentioned and the dressipi thing sounds great too.

I know jeans and jumpers can certainly be stylish, but certainly not the way I'm doing it, couple of primark horrors on constant repeat, trainers that look terrible with jeans because my boots have fallen apart, don't even own any heels of any sort anymore, not even sure what happened to them. It's the usual 'no time to get dressed in the morning or ever go shopping' tale, though of course I know I could make the time if I gave myself a promotion in the family to do list.....

When you said you liked the way people dress in Edinburgh, I immediately thought of the clothes in Case Histories last year...

Get Cutie website where the dress came from Wink

(Blimey those dresses are expensive - I'm pretty sure they have sales though).

psammyad · 19/03/2012 13:29

(Case Histories, Irvine Welsh & Miss Jean Brodie are the only Edinburgh references I have, really).

Collectif is in the the same vein - no idea if this is heading in the right direction btw, it's all a bit too quirky & glam for me, but some people seem to be able to make it work.

psammyad · 19/03/2012 13:47

Joy has some similar stuff to Oliver Bonas

ViolaCrayola · 19/03/2012 14:57

My uniform is dress - interesting or plain worn with interesting scarf, tights (often coloured), boots (or flats in summer). Nice earrings, good coat etc. My dresses are usually A-line and above the knee. For me it is a cheap (relies on accessories), no-brain way of dressing. You can make it less/more vintage depending on the dress and accessories. I don't tend to shop in expensive shops much - usually H&M, Primark, Topshop, Charity/vintage shops, sometimes Whistles in the sale. I get the odd classy accessory as a present.

Don't know if this is helpful - may be a bit Mum uniform still? You could book one of those personal shopper things in John Lewis if you have some money to spend? Or give H&M a go with a clear 'look' in mind as they seem to have everything and it's cheap :)
