Do you use face powder? Or a powdery foundation- I look shiny!

I stopped using powder over foundation years ago when I found it kept building up on top of my eyebrows (!?) and looked rather cakey, but I had my photo taken yesterday for work and thought I looked really shiny!

I use a Barbara Daly foundation which I like, but obviously it isn't enough to keep the shine under control. I don't have oily skin, but need something? What can I try!?

I use clinique here Fab stuff, very fine and never clumpy. I do use a huge brush though which helps.

I find pressed powder is heavier.

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 15/03/2012 21:28

I have the same problem I just need my shine covered not really colour.
Is pressed best?
I heard cornsilk was good.

At least you have sorted your foundation OP! I'm still sorting that out!

therumoursaretrue · 15/03/2012 21:35

I use Clinique loose powder, patted on with a powder puff and then use a big powder brush to dust away any extra if I want a matt finish. I just apply with the big brush and leave out the powder puf if I want a less obvious matt look.

Loose powder is much better than pressed for avoiding the cakey look!

Also a eyebrow brush, combed through brows after you apply powder might help avoid build-up in that area.

I use a light dust of body'shop mineral loose powder, but just on my t-zone. This does the job and fairly reasonable price. I got the special brush to go with it too. Works for me..

MooMinCow · 15/03/2012 21:44

I use MAC prep & prime loose powder (ELF do a copy called studio high definition powder) which is super fine White powder (colourless on). never looks chalky, just sets makeup and softens imperfections.

I think you have to be careful with powder as it can be ageing. what about using oil blotting sheets to touch up instead?

southeastastra · 15/03/2012 21:45

No7 transluscent loose powder is just fab

don't get pressed it's pants

southeastastra · 15/03/2012 21:46

invest in super expensive foundation too, i like estee lauder but it lasts a year Grin

futterbingers · 15/03/2012 21:50

Have you tried shine absorbing papers? I use ones I get in Superdrug, I think they are by Kleenex and they are fab and cheap, they just soak up any oil. Don't get papers that have powder in them. Or a mattifying primer before your foundation. Or, and I haven't tried it myself (yet) - milk of magnesia? I can't seem to hyperlink it, but if you google "milk of magnesia for oily skin" you'll get lots of info. Agree about the loose powder being better than pressed, I press loose powder onto my face with the puff and then use a big brush to blend it in.

deviladvocate · 15/03/2012 21:58

I blot away shine with a tissue pressed on gently then lifted away (don't rub as you'll lose your foundation)

I have combination skin and have tried EVERYTHING but still haven't found anything that prevents it happening in the first place... Sad

bare minerals matte foundation stops me getting a shiny nose

The3Bears · 16/03/2012 10:10

Mac blot powder, honestly you need the tiniest bit and it doesnt build up colour so no need to worry about looking cakey :) hth

Bucharest · 16/03/2012 10:19

Clinique gentle light loose powder here. Love it but I think it's been discontinued.

Some makeup woman once told me the secret with both foundation and powder is never to put any above your eyeline. Just from the nose downwards.

valiumredhead · 16/03/2012 10:55

You need Bare Minerals!

GotMyLittleLamb · 16/03/2012 11:00

Third vote for bare minerals, it's fab :)

AmazingDisgrace · 16/03/2012 12:34

Mac Prep and Prime powder is good, as is Laura Mercier Universal loose setting powder. I also rate Bare Minerals Mineral Veil but not the hydrating one as that has some weirdy sheen to it

pollyblue · 16/03/2012 14:30

MAC's blot pressed powder is excellent, very fine and never (ime) goes cakey or patchy. Comes in three 'tones' but is actually colourless.

Iggly · 16/03/2012 15:05

Lily lo mineral foundation sorted out my oil slick

Iggly · 16/03/2012 15:07

Lily lolo that is!

UsedToBePretty · 16/03/2012 15:19

What you need to do is use a powder puff to apply loose powder all over. It doesn't matter if you look like you've dipped your face in icing sugar, just make sure you get it on.

Then you take a big powder brush and dust it all off.

It should stay shine free all day.

Do not do this if you are wearing a black top Grin.

UsedToBePretty · 16/03/2012 15:20

Sorry x-post with theroumoursaretrue Grin

UsedToBePretty · 16/03/2012 15:21

rumours even

QuinnFabray · 16/03/2012 18:24

Definately Blotting paper. I get mine from the spot section in Boots, usually on 3 for 2. Gently press the paper over shiney bits.

therumoursaretrue · 16/03/2012 19:38

Great minds usedtobepretty!

TheMonster · 16/03/2012 19:39

I swear by Body Shop face blotting tissue things. Excellent to carry around with you to absorb the shine.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 16/03/2012 22:10

I use OC8 mattifying gel. It claims to keep you shine free for up to 8 hours - it doesn't last much more than 5 or 6 on me but that's a massive improvement on the less than 1 hour after make up breakthrough of oil I was getting.

I think mine came from pharmacy4u or something similar, was about £10 and lasts for ages.
