what to dress a newborn in if you don't like 'clothes'?

Sleepsuits look a little slattern and rompers aren't my cup of tea (as in the traditinal one that look like this.

I don't really want to dress my baby in jeans, but do I have any alternatives?!

Thanks.

I really liked sort of footed legging things with jersey tops I got in a bumper pack from M&S when DS was tiny. Nice and soft but easy for frequent nappy changes. Will try to find link..

ShowOfHands · 11/03/2012 21:41

Slattern? Eh? DS is 27 weeks and wears sleepsuits most of the time. Some with feet, some without. He occasionally wears soft cotton trousers with feet and a long sleeved top/cardie but what on earth is slattern about sleepsuits? They're practical, comfy and look lovely imho.

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/03/2012 21:41

Sleepsuits look slattern Shock... They're ideal though. And you'll be getting through loads of 'em. I wouldn't bother struggling to get a baby into jeans.

Seona1973 · 11/03/2012 21:42

I think dungarees look cute and pinafore dresses for girls are nice too.

chocoroo · 11/03/2012 21:43

I'm not against clothes, we have some lovely stuff for DD. I guess you could go with leggings - much softer than jeans and lots of cool colours.

CuppaTeaJanice · 11/03/2012 21:43

You can get sleepsuits that aren't quite so pyjama-like. They tend to pull over the head rather than poppers up the front, and have nicer designs and embellishments.

Otherwise, soft trousers, more like joggers than jeans, and little jumpers, tops and hoodies can look cute. Girls look nice in A-line dresses with tights.

milkysmum · 11/03/2012 21:44

agree showofhands. my ds 22 weeks and lives in sleep suits. he looks gorgous and is comfy which is most important. didnt realise babies were intrested in fassion!

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 11/03/2012 21:45

I rather like rompers - nice ones though, not like the one you linked to Grin

Try Gap, Boden, Next, JoJo, or scandi brands like Molo, Katvig, Polarn O Pyret. £££ new but lots on Ebay. I also love those soft footed trousers.

abigboydidit · 11/03/2012 21:45

Think this is it - they seem to be calling them crawlers. Though think DS was in sleepysuits for about 2 weeks!

snapsnap · 11/03/2012 21:46

Eh babygro's?

breatheslowly · 11/03/2012 21:50

Whatever you choose, remember that your baby will be lying down and sleeping a lot of the time, so probably deserves to be comfortable. The more comfortable your baby is, the less likely it will be to wake up.

RitaMorgan · 11/03/2012 21:52

DS was in babygrows and cardigans until he started crawling, I got lots of nice stuff from Molo, Katvig, Me Too etc.

TheSurgeonsMate · 11/03/2012 21:55

snapsnap you haven't understood the slattern problem I don't think.

I think OP that if you won't dress the baby in babygros you really are looking at clothes.

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 11/03/2012 21:57

Sorry, I should explain the slattern comment, I just assumed that people will think I am a slattern for putting my child in 'night' clothes all day, a bit like adults who go to shops in PJs? I just thought that was the case.

Looks like sleepsuits in the day times aren't considered slattern though, so I'm just gonna use them Grin.

Thanks for the link abigboydidit, I will try the recommended shops for nicer rompers. Cheers everyone.

Babygros are designed for babies to live in. They're not specifically nightwear. My 8 week old is in them most of the time.

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 11/03/2012 21:59

Newborn babies do tend to sleep a lot even if it doesn't always seem that way at 2am . If you are worried about the "slattern" impression that sleepsuits may give you probably need to tackle the problem at source by suggesting to your baby that he find something more productive to do with his time.

Jojay · 11/03/2012 21:59

How about these and these - nice soft seperates from John Lewis. They do girl versions too and mine lived in that kind of thing when they were tiny.

Sleepsuits are fine but the poppers drive me a bit mad after a while.

BelinaTheChicken · 11/03/2012 22:00

What else is there apart from clothes or sleepsuits? I supposed you could grease him up like a cross channel swimmer. Definitely warm, if a little slippery

bemybebe · 11/03/2012 22:06

I love Bamboo Baby, their clothes are amazing. What about these trousers or bodysuits? They are very stylish, feel very silky and machine wash extremely well...

EightiesChick · 11/03/2012 22:07

Perhaps you should put him in a suit and tie, just so people you meet on the street don't get the wrong impression and think he's just loafing around the house all day. Honestly, just get nice babygros and put him in those.

apple99 · 11/03/2012 22:11

Dd lived in babygro's for the first couple of months and even now if we are not doing much she can be seen sporting a babygro during the day. She also wears leggings and soft top's or tights and jersey dresses. Nothing stiff or denim.

TheDetective · 11/03/2012 22:13

I like the soft touch babygrow like this

Zipitydooda · 11/03/2012 22:14

Babygros look best on babies at least for first 3 months, clothes look weird.

I also love the leggings and tops from Polarn O Pyret although they are expensive (I buy in the sales).

TheDetective · 11/03/2012 22:15

Or this or this :)

breatheslowly · 11/03/2012 22:18

I think that there is a cut-off for babies wearing baby-grows all day, but different people have different expectations. I think we stopped at about 6 months for days when we were going to see people, and possibly a bit later for lazy days around the house. At 6 months DD was reliably sitting up. I didn't put her in dresses until she could walk as I thought that she would crawl into them and get stuck. Other friends seem to have stopped baby-grows during the day in the company of others anywhere between 3 and 9 months. I get the impression that some people are less focussed on making sure that their baby is comfy than I am, but they also seem to wear more uncomfortable clothes than I do. I never understood putting shoes on non-walking babies as an example.
