what to dress a newborn in if you don't like 'clothes'?

Sleepsuits look a little slattern and rompers aren't my cup of tea (as in the traditinal one that look like this.

I don't really want to dress my baby in jeans, but do I have any alternatives?!

Thanks.

Sleep suits for the first couple of months but after that I am really not keen on them apart from at bedtime. For the first 9 months or so I like footless babygros with gap socks for daytime or soft jersey trousers with a top and cardigan but quite frankly after month or so of doing up poppers in sleep suits I have lost the will to live. DC3 was in proper pyjamas, albeit with feet by 5 months as I was ready to throw the poppered sleep suits out of the window in frustration.

Bear in mind that babies often wrapped in a blanket so people may never notice the bottom half! In which case cardi on top and no-one is the wiser about slattern sleepsuit. Personally got v bored with poppers & got velour footed trousers plus long sleeved vests for all of mine 3months plus with a tank top or cardi on top. H&m brilliant for bright coloured leggings and tops.

DS just turned one and he is still regularly in sleepsuits all day!

I regularly put a sleepsuit on him and then a pair of trousers (trackies, soft cotton one before he crawled and jeans after). The brilliance of this is it looks like he has matching socks on and I then I feel like I have made an effort.

DD will be 4 weeks on Weds. She wears bundler nightgowns and a grobag at night. Bundlers have a ruched bottom so. They mean that baby can sleep all night curled up and there are no poppers for mum to have to undo in the middle of the night.

Anything with inbuilt scratch mits is a good idea. The little white scratch mits tend to fall off, and both my babies liked scratching their faces.

In the daytime, DD either wears babygros/ sleepsuits or sometimes a little outfit, most often trousers with feet over a long sleeved vest and with a cardigan.

Mothercare do some packs of good quality babygros, we got some a couple of weeks back, buy one get one half price, and got one lot floral and lacy, one lot with motifs of teapots and teacups. This was the best value and most "daywear" in style that I could find. Oh, and they have scratchmits attached.

I nearly bought the teapots and teacups ones!

My daughter is 3 months and I've only put her in an outfit once to see what it looked like (and even then it was dungarees over her babygrow!).

Babygrows are far more comfortable for small babies I think.

I forgot that we had bundlers for DD for the first month or so. They were great until she got too long for them. DD then had rompers instead of baby grows as the feet on baby grows always looked like they were pulling at her feet. Some Boden rompers are great because they popper right down the front and each leg. I was never very good at getting things over DD's head.

Dresses are great for little girls - make nappy changing really easy!

mathanxiety · 12/03/2012 16:22

I have photos of the DCs in babygros and little dresses, nose to the ground and small rear ends in the air, when they had managed to crawl right up to the armpits of dresses and babygros. Little pants and tops are better for crawlers.

Petit Bateau have a few nice comfortable sets which are really just 'posher' sleepsuits, (some shops used to call them playsuits), I suppose. This type of thing:

www.petit-bateau.co.uk/e-shop/product/68918/28X/baby-flower-print-blouse-and-sleepsuit-set.html

Or nice soft dresses to wear with tights and cardigans. E.g. www.eliasandgrace.com/babies/bonton/paris-dress/4337-petrol-green-100-percent-cotton Also check Boden for those, plus playsuits.

herecomesthsun · 12/03/2012 16:55

I couldn't resist acquiring a very few dresses actually, in my joy at having a little girl Grin. However, DD was too small for the smallest tights last time I tried her in them. The alternatives that we have to hand are ankle socks and footed trousers, and none of these seems quite right at the moment.

Then again, I have almost everything in 0-3m or 3-6m (and almost nothing as "newborn") so I will see how she grows into things over the summer.

Babygros for as long as possible in this house!

mrsebojones · 12/03/2012 19:33

I have never liked babies, or children for that matter, in mini adult clothese. DD and DS both spent the first few months of their lives in beautiful babygros from Gap, Jojo Maman, John Lewis and Mothercare. There is nothing 'slattern' about me or my DC, I can assure you Wink

They also wore lots of the very soft cotton legging tupe things with feet and mix and match tops. And they also had some dungarees in the same material.

landofsoapandglory · 12/03/2012 19:55

DS1 was in clothes from very early on being my PFB and all!

DS2 was in sleepsuits for at least the first 3 months. I bought some bright coloured and patterned ones. If anyone thought I was a slattern they never said!

vesela · 12/03/2012 19:55

?? I thought it was compulsory for babies to wear vests and babygros for the first couple of months. DD graduated to long-sleeved vests and jersey trousers, or the odd little dress, at about 3 months. Those bundler nightgowns look excellent, though.

Rosebud05 · 12/03/2012 20:07

Oh, yes, babygros all the way for as long as possible.

Dc2 was doing the nursery drop-off for DC1 in his pjs well into his first year....

smilesy · 12/03/2012 20:12

I agree that ii is nice to have some "daytime" sleepsuits, partly because it helps to establish the day / night ritual for both you and little one, but it is not really worth thinking about this until lo is 2 or 3 months old as you will constantly be changing due to puke / poonami episodes!
I personally don't like dungarees until at least the sitting up stage as if lo is lying own they have a tendency to ride up at the top so baby looks like it has a coat hanger in its clothes. I prefer soft joggers or leggings when lo is a bit older as you get heartily sick of struggling to do up poppers on a wriggly child!

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2012 20:16

I don't know if anyone has sad this as there's too many posts to read but Jojo Maman Bebe do some really nice newborn things. All in nice cotton and a bit more 'daywear' than sleepsuits

Rainydayagain · 12/03/2012 20:56

Sleep suits rock!
My pfb had clothes, my dragged along second sleepsuits.

Mil's first comment through the door " oh your in your pjs again"

No comfy baby, happy baby in suit and cardi you stupid women.( who wears socks and sandles FFS)
