Best foundation of the moment?

Always on the hunt for The Foundation......am nearly out of my Clarins Instant Smooth which I keep coming back to, but wondered if there was anything particularly wow-factor-y come out while I've been using this pot?

I am very tempted by the Dior Capture serum foundation but if I'm forking out £60 for a bottle of slap I want some recommendations first!

I had samples of Vitalumiere and Lancome something or other (Teint idole?) and wasn't impressed by either. I am very old (46) and have dry skin. I need to knock 20 yrs off please!

I hear good things about Bourjois healthy mix?

Hi

I recently bought Lancome Teint Miracle after trying out lots of different ones. I have oily/combination skin though so maybe it won't be quite right for you.

I find it does even out my skin tone really well but I don't feel like I have a mask on IYKWIM.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 10/03/2012 17:33

I didn't get on with Vitalumiere but LOVE Vitalumiere Aqua

emsyj · 10/03/2012 17:46

My tutor on a make-up course I did last year said she had bought the Dior Capture £££ foundation and didn't rate it, but was using it up as it was so expensive. BUT foundation is very individual - what you love, others might hate.

I have oily skin so my own favourites are unlikely to suit you, but I have read tons of positive things about Chanel Vitalumiere (don't think they've discontinued that one in their recent foundation overhaul/cull). It's been going for donkeys' years and it applies very smoothly but it's probably better for a dry skin like yours as I found it needed a lot of powdering and was quite oily (although the assistant says it's silicone based not oil based???? Dunno how true that is). I got a tester sample rather than buying it, worth asking for one at the counter.

mirpuppet · 10/03/2012 18:08

46 is not very old.

emsyj · 10/03/2012 18:14

Oh whoops just seen that you've had a sample of vitalumiere Blush.

FWIW, I think Estee Lauder do the best foundations - not sure which of theirs is the right one for dry skin, but go and ask for some samples and demos. I have tried every foundation under the sun (horrible skin, need mask-like coverage) and I keep coming back to Estee Lauder. I'm gutted that they discontinued 'Enlighten', which was the loveliest oil free foundation ever, but the range is still very good. Looks like the 'Futurist' and 'Resilience Lift' ones are meant for dryer skins.

Check out makeupalley.com for reviews too - there are tons and tons of them for every product and brand you can think of.

I've recently switched from Lily lolo mineral foundation to Bourgeois Healthy mix and think it is fab. Mineral was looking cakey by mid afternoon and even with primer my pores were showing.

Healthy mix goes on a bit mask like and looks a bit pale, but then it does a magic thing - kind of sinks into the skin and looks, well like your skin but lovely and clear! I use the lightest 51 but thinking of going to 52 next time - I am really put off these work your colour out yourself in the chemist situations, so I think the thing to do is take a small empty pot into Boots et al and take home a generous bit squirt and do your face properly with it at home.

dodgyroots · 10/03/2012 18:17

Oh I have combination skin - dry cheeks but with a bit of T zone congestion - lovely!

SkivingAgain · 10/03/2012 18:21

I've just started using L'Oreal magique BB name something like that and I love it. I don't need a lot of coverage as skin is quite good but just need some evening out of skin tones. I moisturise after shower, then about 20-30 mins later I apply this BB cream.

Until recently I was using Lancombe over La Base, but even then I find it looks like it is sitting on my skin so I end up rubbing most of it back off.

DonaAna · 10/03/2012 18:35

Chanel Lift Lumiere 0.5 Faience. And Revlon Colorstay Ivory. Dry/normal sensitive skin.

TreesDogsBooks · 10/03/2012 18:38

Revlon photo ready is good too.

ggirl · 10/03/2012 18:43

can't beat bare minerals in my book
only one that looks completely natural on me

Bunbaker · 10/03/2012 18:45

Bare Minerals. I am not generally a fan of foundation because I don't like to feel it on my skin. Bare Minerals is brilliant.

Bucharest · 10/03/2012 19:13

ggirl, didn't you use to be my partner in Clarins Instant smooth raving?

I don't really understand mineral foundation, is it powder? What happens to it on your face? I worry I will look like Barbara Cartland!

I'm abroad so make up counters are even scarier than UK ones, so think will go on an ebay-sample-mass-buy tomorrow!

Thanks for all recommendations!

I used to be very sceptical about minerals as I don't like powder, but mineral foundation isn't like normal face powder and dosn't make you look like Barbara Cartland. The trick is to go and have your face made up in Debenhams where they sell it and ask them to find a shade that exactly matches your skin tone. Believe me, it is a revelation.

Sunshinedelacruz · 10/03/2012 20:04

I have been trying for years to track down the best foundation. I have skin that is red, blemishy and I've got a large face so need to apply quite a lot. I have bare minerals and like it but I dont feel it gives me enough coverage. I was in tesco last week and pretty skint, and looking in the make up section. Quite on impulse I picked up a very cheap foundation called vivo. Thought it would be rubbish but it's very good and leaves no red/orange undertones.

ItsaMissTerri · 10/03/2012 20:15

Another vote for Bourjois Healthy Mix - the one I am using has a red top and is actually called Serum Healthy Mix - i am 50, have dry skin and medium complexion and actually use a blend of numbers 52 and 53... 52 goes on first and then a touch of the 53 on cheek areas and down nose.... but the greatest revelation (finally learned how to apply foundation that looks natural!) has been to apply it using a foundation brush with a kind of stippling/buffing technique ...put a blob of foundation on back of hand and pick it up with the brush small bit at a time...it is honestly worth the effort as seems to stay on longer and blends beautifully
Hope you find the right one for you good luck Smile

coffeeinbed · 10/03/2012 21:20

That's the one I use - Healthy mix Serum 52.
Love it.
Mix it with some Strobe Cream when I feel like it.

PenneyAnne · 10/03/2012 22:52

Sunshine, vichy dermablend is brilliant for giving good coverage to blemish/reddy skin. Its specially designed for this-I have only recently discovered it -someone here recommended it and it gives fantastic coverage,You only need to use a little also. Its available in all chemists and is around £15.Really worth a look1

Judester24 · 10/03/2012 23:05

I really rate bare minerals. It is 100% mineral, contains no parabens, perfumes, artificial colourings, and will give very good coverage if used correctly. It also has a natural spf 15 in the form of titanium dioxide. Lots of foundations contail talc which will dry the skin but is just used as a cheap filler.
Sunshine, if you're not getting the coverage you need try just tapping a little bit into the lid then really swirling the brush in it for abour 30 seconds before buffing into the skin for a minute, it should give adequate coverage. Are you using the bare minerals brushes with it? Because this really makes a differance, they are designed to be used with the foundation.
I have quite a bit of pigmentation and this really gives me good coverage. I started using BM 5 years ago and will never go back now!

ggirl · 10/03/2012 23:49

Bucharest-yes I did used to use clarins instant smooth(still have some) but I have an oily t-zone and the mineral makeup is much better for me, lasts longer and doesn't sit in my pores ,which every cream/liquid makeup does

I found that up close with a magnifying makeup mirror I can see the makeup on my skin with cream/liquid foundations, with bare minerals it's invisible.
Not instantly invisible but after a few moments to settle it looks entirely natural . I use the matte version and it lasts all day on me which no other makeup has managed quite as wellll.

schmalex · 11/03/2012 09:13

I really love my Illamasqua light liquid foundation, although I've heard that their new Skin Base is also amazing. It gives pretty flawless coverage but isn't too heavy.

Dry skin. Vita.

ggirl · 11/03/2012 10:46

Done

monkeysmama · 11/03/2012 10:52

Sunshine - the Laura Mercier Mineral Foundation primer is worth every penny. Makes Bare Minerals last even longer and look very smooth. Wonder product imo.
