Moisturiser help please

I'm trying to decide on a new moisturiser and am getting myself all confused!

I had previously tried an Aveda tourmaline cream - I decided to spend what I thought was quite a lot of money but it sent my skin in to a rash and was really sore.

So now I'm in a bit of a quandry what to try next- Clarins seems to get good reviews but maybe it's a bit harsh? The Olay three point range also seems to get reviews but of course I can't test it first so not sure how my skin would react.

My skin is starting to feel old, lacking in plumpness and all round a bit dull. I've never experienced a reaction to any creams before but then I usually just buy something fairly cheap and cheerful.

I'm a complete skin care novice but forty is staring me in the face (as are the wrinkles) so I think I need to start taking it a bit more seriously.

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated. Smile

If you're going to go for a more expensive brand, it's worth looking on Ebay for samples/gwp's to try for a couple of pounds before you part with £30-odd for a full sized product.

Some brands do do trial sizes too, if you're interested in organic products I know Green People and Pure Nuff Stuff do trial sizes.

crikeybadger · 06/03/2012 15:22

Thanks pollyblue- I'll check on ebay. Are there any brands that you like in particular?

I have used Green People before and like it, but I think I need something a bit more heavy duty iyswim.

Thanks for the link *tiggy8- you've got spend £5.00 before they'll send you the samples though, but they do look nice.

Just bumping to see if anyone else has any experience of Olay products or any other moisturisers. Oh and btw, - is a serum needed and what does it do?

TIA

Hello again, I used Clinique's Superdefense for several years and loved it, then about a year ago I started getting quite bad spots on my chin (hormonal, apparently) and found the Clinique didn't help (I still needed a moisturiser to conteract the acne treatment i was using). So i went over to Estee Lauder's daywear, which is fine. Both come in several formulations to suit different skin types - if you're looking for spf too Superdefense has the edge with SPF 25. You'll be able to get trial sizes of these on Ebay with no problems.

Eucerin have a Hyaluron range which is aimed at your skin concerns, might be worth a look?

I can recommend MAC's prep + prime SPF50 too, it's a really good primer and helps makeup last well.

Have you ever looked at makeupalley.com? There 1000s of reviews on there of just about every skincare item/comsnetic under the sun, you might find it helpful.

countessbabycham · 07/03/2012 14:35

I genuinely believe that more expensive doesn't necessarily equal better (and, yes,I have tried Clinique, and a couple of other pricey types.)

I use Boots Vitamin E cream and would recommend that. I also use Doublebase cream the kids have for their eczema at times, and its great!I have sensitive skin and I'm over 40,and I don't think I'm any more or less wrinkled than my peers.

I like the plain ordinary Olay fluid too - I'm Ok with the standard one but there is also a sensitive skin one I think.

PeskyRat · 07/03/2012 14:48

Hi crikey,

I had a bad experience after using the Olay Regenerist stuff, not sure if that's the 3 point you were thinking of. Was a while ago now, but it was the regenerist serum and moisturiser I tried and it caused me the same problems that you have had with the Aveda. Rashy, sore and spotty skin.

I am now using Liz Earle cleanser, toner and the dry/sensitive moisturiser and my skin feel totally balanced and non irritated.

Have also just introduced some Trilogy Rosehip Oil into my routine and am loving so far, no bad reaction.

Must just say, Olay were great, refunded me the total cost of purchase (in vouchers which could be used for max factor etc) without even proof of purchase.

crikeybadger · 07/03/2012 15:02

Thanks for the help all.

Yes Pesky it was the three point one I was looking at.
Good to hear that Olay refunded you, I've got to go in and try and get a refund on the Aveda one at the w/e.

I am a total novice at all this stuff so all these suggestions are really useful. I'll have a look at some of the reviews and some of the brands that you have used and try and get some samples.

Am embarassed to say that I'd never even heard of primer before- well only in the context of paint, so I have quite a bit of learning to do. Smile

haha, face primer does a similar job!

I find it useful because my skin is a bugger - oily yet sensitive and quite pale - so makeup doesn't always last or wear well without it, and I need a good SPF because I go red very quickly. You might well find you don't need one, once you've found a good moisturiser.

CarpeJugulum · 07/03/2012 17:03

Olay Day/Daily(?) Care fluid works for me - with SPF 15.

No major outbreaks since I started using it.

jenpetronus · 07/03/2012 17:04

I've tried loads over the years - I like the Clarins ones, but they do seem pricey, I like Dr Hauschka too, but again it's not cheap. I've just discovered Weleda and love, love, love it. I got the Iris night cream, but reading through all the info it seems I may be better with the Grenadine one which is for (ahem) more mature skin. It was ?11 for 50ml, which I thought reasonable. I'm (just) 40 haha & prone to dryness

BearlyThere · 07/03/2012 17:05

Gah. They're al
The same. I've never noticed any differencevtbh

Bucharest · 07/03/2012 17:07

My new favourite (I started a thread on it) is L'occitane divine cream. It is - well- divine. The texture is amazing and aftera 3 day sample I looked like I had had a facelift.

PeskyRat · 07/03/2012 17:08

Best to start off basic, especially if you have had any skin reactions in the past.

Find a good, gentle cleanser and a decent moisturiser that your skin doesn't react to, then take it from there adding any extras.

Samples are a good idea, and also maybe have a look at QVC online. You can return any skincare products you've bought (within 30 days I think) even if you have used it all, so it's a good way to try out new brands.

caffinequeen · 07/03/2012 18:30

How about trying Neals Yard rose cream...'tis free with Marie Claire magazine this month. If it's no good, at least you have a magazine to read!

I've bought it but an waiting until my current cream runs out before I try it.

rowingboat · 07/03/2012 18:33

Hi there,
I love Dr Haushka and find the rose day cream and quince day creams both brighten my skin, which can be a bit dull. I agree it is a bit pricey, but have just tried the Neal's yard rose moisturiser which is currently free with Marie Claire and I think it has definitely given my skin a boost, it looks more rosy and smooth with no dry bits.
I also like E45 cream as it always seems to make my skin look quite good and if it doesn't suit won't break the bank to try.
Let us know what you end up with?

rowingboat · 07/03/2012 18:35

Oops cross-posted with Caffeinequeen - must be good! Smile

EllenParsons · 07/03/2012 18:40

Just wanted to say if you had an allergic reaction to the Aveda did you take it back?

It is always worth a try returning it to see if you can get your money back. I came out in bumps after using a primer from Boots No 7 and when I went back with it and explained they were perfectly happy to give me my money back. I imagine Aveda would too. In fact the more expensive and "higher end" brands probably more likely to refund to keep your goodwill IMO.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/03/2012 18:43

Liz Earle is very nice I think, but you need to start with the cleanse and polish.

Then I use the super skin facial oil at night. Daytime moisturiser I currently use boots protect and perfect but I feel this is perhaps not cutting the mustard any longer.

crikeybadger · 07/03/2012 21:23

Wow, lots more helpful suggestions - thanks. Smile

Yes, I did buy Marie Claire for the NYR moisturiser but I don't find it rich enough so will use if for now whilst I carry on my research!

Ellen- I'm planning on taking the Aveda one back this weekend. Was a bit gutted really as I'd never spent so much on a moisturiser and was expecting good things from it.

Just off to investigate l'Occitane divine cream now as I feel like I could do with a facelift. Grin

I used to use Clarins but was too pricey for a product that lasted only a month...now use the Liz Earle range but I think it works best if you do all three steps of cleanse and polish, skin tonic and then moisturiser. I find a whole set of products lasts 2 months Smile

Kellamity · 08/03/2012 08:46

Off to buy Marie Claire today!

Bucharest · 08/03/2012 08:52

I know! (mine was a sample and now I'm waiting for a paycheck before I splash out)

Alibaba- the Lift and Luminate N7 is much nicer and a bit thicker than the P and P. I found the P and P too thin somehow. (though I love the serum)

crikeybadger · 09/03/2012 17:54

Just wanted to update and say that I have had a productive day!

Went to a nice chemists and the lady gave me three Clarins samples to try- including the beauty balm. Then went to the healthfood shop and got a trial size of the Rose Day Cream.

Will give them a whirl and see how I go.
