Can anyone tell me the truth about BIO-OIL

mosschops30 · 29/02/2012 21:48

Ive used it before on my CS scar and it was wonderful.
I bought a small bottle today planning to put a dab on my face at night after cleansing and toning.
It says t can be used on the face.

But there are so many conflicting things on tinternet about whether its ok. Some people saying its amazing, others saying that the purcellin oil in it is mineral oil and just like rubbing petrol on your face Hmm.

can anyone please shed some sensible light??

I'm sat here with it on my face. I don't put it on every night but like how it feels.

I also rub it in my cuticles and on the back of my hands.

I love the stuff.

DressDownFriday · 29/02/2012 21:59

I'm also on the coconut oil thread - Im very slippy today.

OlympicEater · 29/02/2012 22:28

I think it was a mumsnet product test a while back, will see if I can find a link

Bohica · 29/02/2012 22:33

I've been thinking about using it after buying a bottle to zap DD2's twig through cheek accident.

dingdong3 · 29/02/2012 22:34

I wouldn't put bio-oil near your face. It's too perfumed for faces IMO and I also feel strongly about the mineral oil aspect of it too so personally, I wouldn't use it anywhere on my body. Neal's Yard rose hip oil has the same healing effect yet has no chemicals and is not mineral oil based. It's more expensive but not prohibitively so. here it is. Also, if you google it, you'll find lots of recommendations from people who use it rather than bio-oil.
Grin at slippy dressdown...you're well greased up. I'm defo going to get some coconut oil after reading that thread Smile

It smells lovely. I don't think it has magical properties.

willybreeder · 29/02/2012 22:47

I've got combination skin and it brought me out in awful boil/cyst style spots!! I had to have a course of microdermabrasion to clear my skin. Don't do it Smile

gomummygo · 29/02/2012 22:52

Don't do it. Great on c-section scar, was NOT a good idea on face!

ChiefPotterer · 29/02/2012 23:16

I beg to differ- i have been using it for about a month on my face at night and the difference to my skin and fine lines is amazing. I have actually had a few comments on the difference-i love the stuff and would highly recommend!.

Trills · 29/02/2012 23:19

Depends on your skin I suppose :)

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 29/02/2012 23:26

I use it on my face and body and find it fantastic

I have noticed a really big improvement with my face, fine lines have gone and my skin looks so much better, I was worried it would be too harsh or bring me out in spots, but so far so good Smile

i've used it for years on my face, its too expensive for my body! been fine, great at reducing hyper-pigmentation. the mineral oil aspect doesn't bother me. I also use rosehip with equal effect. horses for courses.

BikeRunSki · 29/02/2012 23:38

I have really shitty skin, and it works brilliantly at clearing up blotches, dry patches, small scars etc, and I use it for additional moisturisation (on top of my usual moisturiser) in the winter.

mosschops30 · 01/03/2012 09:46

See what mixed reviews!!
Well now ive bought it maybe i should give it a try. But i fo fancy the rosehip from neals yard too.

Personally I would use sweet almond oil.

dexter73 · 01/03/2012 11:42

I use bio oil on my face at night. I find it really good and have not suffered boils or spots. About a month after I first started using it my mum said that my skin was looking really lovely and I think it is the oil. I don't mind that it is perfumed as all my face creams, serums, body moisturisers, shower gels etc are all perfumed too.
I have very dry skin so maybe this is why it works for me.

MissFoodie · 01/03/2012 12:55

the sensible answer is that if it makes your skin feel/look nice, and you have no objections to mineral oil/silicone then use it! at least it's cheap, so if you dont like it, you've not lost much!

dingdong hope the coconut oil works for you, I did a feature on it as a cleanser, it's a brilliant eye make up remover :) plus, so cheap!

otchayaniye · 01/03/2012 16:40

There is no evidence that bio oil does anything for scars etc, which is why the ASA banned that phrasing in the marketing.

My derm friend says silicon gel is proven to work and I used tubes of that with great success on my scars.

Might as well try it as its cheap but any old oil would be ok.

MissFoodie · 01/03/2012 16:42

yes but it's fulll of silicone so should work as well as the gel?

otchayaniye · 01/03/2012 17:00

I doubt it as the point of silicone gel is to entirely cover (with flex) the scar and repel the cells tht form scars, as scars heal better in first three months (how long it takes stratum corneum to form again) in a moist environment.

A topical oil is hardly likely to be occlusive enough to do this 24 hours a day

otchayaniye · 01/03/2012 17:04

I've no beef about bio oil, but if you want to spend just under a tenner on something unproven, when you can spend 25 on something proven, then knock yourself out.

valiumredhead · 02/03/2012 08:16

YY silicon is fantastic for fading scars - I have very bad scars after and accident then an op and I used silicon plasters. The reason bio oil or any oil work is that the act of massage improves the circulation and breaks down the scar tissue, nothing more. The amount of silicon in bio oil isn't enough to do anything according to my physio.

Lizziej56 · 04/04/2018 19:17

My consultant has just told me to massage bio-oil into a post surgery facial scar - I don’t believe the oil alone will aid recovery of my scar , I think the massaging will be the key factor ... but medically the advice was to use it on my face

Doobigetta · 04/04/2018 20:17

There's something in it that my skin reacts to really badly. I'd always choose a plant oil over a mineral anyway.
