Jewellery or bag??

What would YOU call an investment?

My lovely, lovely DH has told me to take some money out of our savings account and to go treat myself Grin. I want to be all sensible and have said that it would be better to add this money to our new kitchen budget (this will happen later in the year). He is very insistent and has said I deserve to be treated.

Now, my dilemma is... Every time I have been treated before, I have gone for diamonds. A little while ago, I got a beautiful diamond bracelet, before this I got earings. I have seen a ring in my price range which is very lovely, but I have three other dress rings - one I got for my 21st, one my grandad gave me which belonged to my grandma (wearing it now) and one which belonged to my other grandma - mum gave me this and I had it fixed and had a stone put back in and I wear this also now and again.

I could get a watch, but I do have a number of watches, non very very expensive, two rather nice rotary ones I got when I was 18 and 21 and two by DKNY and one by Guess.

I am thinking jewellery is a better investment than a bag although I have seen a rather nice Mulberry one.

Do bags as nice as Mulberry date?

I know I am very lucky and am sorry I have written an essay, but I am just not sure what to do.

Btw, I have just bought a lovey pony skin bag (a bargain in TK Maxx) by Edina Ronay, so it isn't like I haven't got a nice one.

Help....

Diamond shoes pinching Bella Wink

Well personally I'd go for jewellery as think it has more longevity. I love a nice handbag but do get bored of them after a while.

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 20:09

MrsCB, my thoughts entirely!

Anyone else?? C'mon, I know bags and diamonds are boring subjects, but I would love to hear from you.

Hmmm, define investment!

IMHO if it's something you may sell in the future, certain bags have a better return than jewellery. For some unknown reason, secondhand jewellery is massively undervalued.

How much is your treat?

I'd probably go for a bag unless I had several thousand to spend on diamonds Grin

Your DH sounds great!

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 20:25

Investment to me is something that doesn't date and is classic.

My budget is around £600. I could put some money to that to make it up to £1000. So not huge, but better than nothing.

Yes, DH is great. He is taking me to New York in June to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

Let me know if ever you want to dump him! Smile - - over £500 - go for jewellery - under 500 - a proper leather classic bag- neutral, black, tan, cream that ticks all your boxes and doesn't follow the current fashion trend. Personally I could never spend over that on a handbag - - but diamonds --- stud earrings? - - - -certainly!Grin

readyforno2 · 29/02/2012 20:27

In that case, save the money till June and treat yourself in New York!

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 20:32

Bunions, I am sorry to say but there are a few in the queue before you!! Grin. He is very lovely indeed and we haven't always been in this fortunate position. I remember years and years ago hiding from the customs and excise people who were knocking on our front door because DH (then self employed) had not paid some VAT. It wasn't that we did not want to pay but we ourselves had not been paid for a job he had done.

which bag are you coveting?

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 20:56

the Somerset pebble tote. I also like the Bayswater, but I am only 5ft so I am thinking this might be too large.

I'd go with the jewellery.... Mulberry bags aren't reeeeeally an investment bag per se. They're not internationally popular. it's a bit of a british trend and and nobody knows whether they'll be worth anything at all in 5-10 years.

Jewellery never fails.

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/02/2012 20:59

Bella (we know each other from shiney threads a while back) and think the bayswater would definitely be too big for you. I have the east west bayswater which is smaller and is nice but isn't lined and to be honest - I don't love it.

I ahem also have the somerset in a red colour and again its nice but its not a 'wow' bag but then I'm not a massive fan of black bags.

Have you looked at anya hindmarch bags - similar price point but I prefer them nowadays.

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 21:02

See, I didn't know that mrsc Blush.

I think I need to have a wander into town on Sunday and have another look at the ring I have seen. I think De Beers will be out of my price range Grin

Have namechanged since then Smile

I'm a big fan of antique jewellery - more bling for your money

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 21:07

MrsCB - are you from Bath by any chance? Grin

No, I must admit I have not looked at any other bags. Will have a look at Anya Hindmarch. When it comes to colour, I must admit, I am very boring. I think for the kind of money those bags are, I would want some lining.

OP posts:
MrsCampbellBlack · 29/02/2012 21:09

I am indeed Smile

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 21:11

I have seen you about lots, but didn't realise it was you.

How the devil are you?

OP posts:
MrsCampbellBlack · 29/02/2012 21:12

Am fine thank you - hide out in S&B most of the time.

How are you? And how lovely to be off to New York - how long are you going for?

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 29/02/2012 21:13

I'd avoid both a get a pair of Laboutins.

travailtotravel · 29/02/2012 21:16

sigh, thought not.

RatDesPaquerettes · 29/02/2012 21:28

Anya Hindmarch rubber clutch - a bargain at £250 Hmm

RatDesPaquerettes · 29/02/2012 21:30

Did not mean to be flippant by the way but was just astonished by the price.

bunionscomingsoon · 29/02/2012 21:57

Now that really is a silly price!Shock - wonder how many they have sold !

BellaVita · 29/02/2012 22:12

Am good thanks. We are going to New York - Sat till Tue (fly back late evening, land back in the UK on Wed morning). Boys are staying here with my parents. I work in a school - get 13 weeks off a year and DH said to me last Sept, can you see about booking some time off for our anniversary and I will take you to Rome. I snorted, and said they would laugh in my face if I asked for "extra" time off - so we are going at the end of May beg of June in half term. I also said if I was going anywhere it wouldn't be Rome had to be New York , so he said ok then, go ahead and book it. We went to Hawaii last Aug for his 50th, so he couldn't really say no to NY for our 25th Grin

I would not buy a rubber bag at that price either...

Am not sure if i could walk in a pair of Laboutins.

Bags and diamonds, my 2 favourite things!

I would only get a bag if you absolutely love it otherwise in a couple of years it will be gathering dust in a cupboard. If you've already got rings then how about a necklace or bracelet instead. If it were me I'd probably take the money to new York and head straight to tiffanys!

Happy shopping
