frugal beauty tips thread?

IAmBooyhoo · 29/02/2012 12:52

i was reading the 'how to be groomed' thread and while all the products mentioned sound like they work wonders, i could never afford to buy the things recommended. my budget is very tight (as is the same for alot of people) and so i thought we could have a thread full of frugal beauty tips, that mean we can all still look our best without breaking the bank. i personally prefer not to use lots of chemicals on my skin or hair, and even less so the cheaper products on the market. (i have done in the past and they just made my skin worse) but if that's what works for you then post your tips and hopefully someone can get the benefit of your experience.

i'll start with a few of my current beauty practices.

  1. oil cleansing method. i have just started this again after attempting it about a year ago ( i was using it aswell as my normal facewash and it just wasn't working so i went back to facewash. will do it properly this time)

  2. no poo method for curly hair. i was using bicarbonate of soda and apple cider vinegar. i did this for about 6 months and my hair was in the best condition of it's life. i only stopped because i started dying my hair pink and it required doing weekly so i started buying colour protect shampoos and conditioners. once my pink dye runs out (i stocked up) i will go back to brown and start no poo again. unless anyone knows of a way to keep my colour whilst doing no poo?

3)bicarb whitens teeth. dip a dampened toothbrush into bicarb and brush teeth once a week to remove staining.

4)sweet almond oil for moisturising body.

5)witch hazel for toner.

i would be really interested in hearing any tips on make-up and how i can look good without spending a fortune on different products.

looking forward to hearing lots more tips and hopefully saving some money!

MissFoodie, when you say you do a brazilian with Veet, how (ahem) far do you go? Any advice as to how (to avoid chemical burns)?

MissFoodie · 03/03/2012 22:36

heheheh
I do everything, front to back, and I use the Veet Coarse Hair (!)
I trim first
never had any stinging, or burning or issues with it

Trills · 03/03/2012 22:44

I really like the Superdrug 2True Posietint - it has more depth of colour than the Benefit stuff.

mrsmartin · 03/03/2012 22:47

Well miss foodie - I don't know how you do it...tried doing an at home hollywood and it was not sucessful hurt like fuck and only got half the hair, however, I use veet sensitive hair removal cream and it works wonders (epilate elsewhere). Also - boots do their own version of silky mitts - about £1.50 for 3 - and they are THE BEST THING if you need silky smooth pins in about 2mins (I used to shave but my hair grows really quickly - 5hours later and I have stubble!!)

MissFoodie · 03/03/2012 22:51

hahaha
you use the veet sensitive on bikini you mean?
those mitts sound bloody fab.......is it 1 for 2 legs?

cocolepew · 03/03/2012 22:57

Vaseline and salt as a exfoliator on the hard skin on your feet.

mrsmartin · 03/03/2012 23:05

yep I find one does both legs and both arms. They are like a realllllllllyyy fine sandpaper and you just buff them over dry skin and it files off any hairs and dry skin...bit of oil on your legs and sexy pins are good to go. They are in the hair removal aisle in a little flat cardboard packet in the white packaging boots has for it's own brand. A beauty cupboard essential (great for holiday!!!!)

And yes - I use the veet cream everywhereWink!!

pluckingupcourage · 03/03/2012 23:50

right, I might have a glass of wine and have a go at a full brazillian tomorrow night. I have the sensitive cream (how on earth you can use the coarse hair cream )

I've heard of the silky mits but have never been sure if they work, so they are on the list now. I wonder if you use the silky mits religiously whether you'd never have to epilate again (thinks wishfully).

mrsmartin · 04/03/2012 00:32

plucking - I think miss foodie uses the coarse hair wax, I use the cream. And yes, if you use the mitts you can stop shaving/epilating but the hair will still grow at the same rate as if you shave. They are the ultimate quick fix!

MissFoodie · 04/03/2012 00:55

no! I use cream for bikini!!!!
NO WAX!!!!
:)

mrsmartin · 04/03/2012 01:10

ah ok...don't know where I got that from Hmm...haha - guess we have that in common too Grin

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 04/03/2012 01:25

For lovers of Benetint - Soap and Glory are doing ' Cheekmate which I love.
My Posietint is just running out and I'm replacing it with Cheekmate instead - its only £8 and gives a lovely natural flushed look.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 04/03/2012 01:32

O god no. Could never do Brazilian with Veet. Its sting city on my lady garden doing that . Plus walk around looking like I am incontinent of poo.

mrsmartin · 04/03/2012 02:20

nanny - I use the sensitive...I pop it on before I get in the shower and then by the time I have washed and conditioned my hair it is ready to come off (I use it pretty much every day and I have a hollywood - no irritation whatsover - and bio oil really stings me so I am quite sensitive).

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 04/03/2012 07:04

mrsmartin that's a good idea ...

MissFoodie · 04/03/2012 10:12

that's what I do too :)

mrsmartin · 04/03/2012 10:27

Scary mental images of myself and Miss Foodie in our (seperate) showers stood like cowboys with cream over the lady garden - sorry everyone!!! BlushGrin

MissFoodie · 04/03/2012 19:21

I'm sure we were separated at birth....

The pound shop- I got a Revlon Just Bitten lipstain thing yesterday and they had 2 Rimmel or collection two thousand eyeshadow trios in a pack.
Homebargains_normal size Batiste-cheaper than other places

Tinwe · 26/01/2013 14:58

Wonder if anyone has any new ideas for this thread? There must be a few people cutting back in this new year? I'm impressed with Aldi daily face shimmer moisturiser. I've combination skin and this one not only gives a really subtle glow and moisturises fine but also soaks in well without a greasy residue.

InNeedOfBrandy · 26/01/2013 15:05

I had chemical burns with veet down there. I had been doing it for 10 years and then bam one day I was in agony. Don't do it to yourself.

babySophieRose · 26/01/2013 18:18

Do you know about aspirin mask and possible blood thinning effects?

pompoochie · 26/01/2013 21:27

One teaspoon each of orange juice and bicarb mixed together makes a wonderful face mask.

And I'm another convert to the oil cleansing method.

HotCrossBunsForAll · 27/01/2013 10:39

Water. Seriously, most people don't drink enough, and the difference it makes to skin is amazing.

B&M bargains and Poundland are great for Sally Hansen/Revlon nail products, and Arm & Hammer toothpaste.
