frugal beauty tips thread?

IAmBooyhoo · 29/02/2012 12:52

i was reading the 'how to be groomed' thread and while all the products mentioned sound like they work wonders, i could never afford to buy the things recommended. my budget is very tight (as is the same for alot of people) and so i thought we could have a thread full of frugal beauty tips, that mean we can all still look our best without breaking the bank. i personally prefer not to use lots of chemicals on my skin or hair, and even less so the cheaper products on the market. (i have done in the past and they just made my skin worse) but if that's what works for you then post your tips and hopefully someone can get the benefit of your experience.

i'll start with a few of my current beauty practices.

  1. oil cleansing method. i have just started this again after attempting it about a year ago ( i was using it aswell as my normal facewash and it just wasn't working so i went back to facewash. will do it properly this time)

  2. no poo method for curly hair. i was using bicarbonate of soda and apple cider vinegar. i did this for about 6 months and my hair was in the best condition of it's life. i only stopped because i started dying my hair pink and it required doing weekly so i started buying colour protect shampoos and conditioners. once my pink dye runs out (i stocked up) i will go back to brown and start no poo again. unless anyone knows of a way to keep my colour whilst doing no poo?

3)bicarb whitens teeth. dip a dampened toothbrush into bicarb and brush teeth once a week to remove staining.

4)sweet almond oil for moisturising body.

5)witch hazel for toner.

i would be really interested in hearing any tips on make-up and how i can look good without spending a fortune on different products.

looking forward to hearing lots more tips and hopefully saving some money!

I did a lovely hair mask on bath night this week.
One egg
Three tablespoons olive oil warm
Two tablespoons honey warm
A little sweet almond oil
Warm water four tbl spoons
Put all into a hot glass jar and mix.

Apply to dry hair in the bath, massage in well, pop shower cap on then a hot wet towel.

Took a while to wash it out the next day but lovely lovely hair.

I also just started ocm and skin looks very nice off to buy castor oil today.

I make a face scrub with juice of a lemon, a teaspoon or two of honey and same of white sugar. Smear it on, give your face a good scrub with the sugar granules (not for sensitive skin obviously) lick fingers, rinse off with warm water. Your face will feel so smooth afterwards it's lovely

SherlockHolmes · 03/03/2012 08:03

This site has loads of good tips.

Rainydayagain · 03/03/2012 08:05

Sorry forgot to add i bathe in shea butter and sweet almond oil, have been doing for about a year and i do not have dry skin anywhere, even my feet are moisturised.
You just dump it in the bath once a week, get out and drip dry, all the oils soak in, its a spa treatment at home for very little.

Its very slippery so be careful.

40notTrendy · 03/03/2012 08:08

Sorry to be boring, but my skin always looks better when I drink plenty of water during the day and cleanse and moisturise at night. I love my fancy products but I've found the Nivea in a blue pot is a great standby all rounder. Even clears up patches of eczema on mine and ds's skin.

If you don't want to be concocting thing
s, can I recommend sample and travel sizes? Great for seeing if things work for you. Ebay and boots are good. At the moment I have dampness sizes in:
Benefit posietint. It lasts ages
Seche vote
Sanctuary body oil spray (i'm trying to get moisturising into my routine)
Simple toner and make up remover.
Samples of protect and perfect that I asked for. Night, day and serum.

They have cost me about £10 in total and are lasting ages.

I second the aspirin face mask, its great and very cheap. I dissolve 2pills in my hand with a drop or two of water then add a dollop of store brought face mask (or you can use honey or yoghurt or moisturiser). Then leave it on 10-20mins then wet my hands and rub it a little to maximise the exfoliating effect, then wash off. Aspirin contains salicylic acid/BHA which is in a lot of beauty and acne products.

Aloe vera/coconut oil/jojoba/KJ jelly as hair stylers. May be more suited to curly hair through.

Socks buns for a cheap, simple and stylish hair style.

as someone has mentioned - coconut oil, i now am completely hooked. i use it as an overnight hair conditioning treatment (see my other thread) and have started using it as a moisturiser too, its fab

also i make my own body scrub with brown sugar and olive oil, it works just as well as any shop bought one

vaseline on the eyelashes before you go to bed seems to make them thicker

IAmBooyhoo · 03/03/2012 11:52

where do you get your coconut oil misty?

A good splosh of Dettol in your bath makes you so so so very clean. You won't believe it. It also clears up any nicks, cuts, scratches, spots or dry skin.

A thin sudocrem facemask for an hour does the same - softens your skin and clears up dry patches and spots.

I just bought some coconut oil in superdrug the other day after reading a thread on here. Was abiut £1.50 I think. Am planning on doing a hair mask tonight............

slapmeonthepatio · 03/03/2012 13:05

I bought my coconut oil from Superdrug I think - but you can get it from health food shops and from Asian supermarkets. I have seen it on Amazon, too.

I'm a big fan of the Nivea Creme in a blue pot. Have used it for years.

I love this thread.

nannipigg · 03/03/2012 13:07

I've heard that mashed up banana is great as a face mask. I have got a book somewhere with old recipes from normal food stuffs somewhere....
Lemon juice is good to brighten hi-lighted hair too!

slapmeonthepatio · 03/03/2012 13:10

Ooh - yes - you can use mashed up avocado, too.

And superdrug do their own version of benetint - for about £5 and I think it's just as good.

mrsmartin · 03/03/2012 13:18

The superdrug benetint is by 2true and it is actually 3 products for a fiver...Grin - shame they don't do one yet that is as good a shade as posie tint.

slapmeonthepatio · 03/03/2012 13:20

The posietint is nice actually. I haven't bought any variety in ages as they last so long.

janx · 03/03/2012 13:27

What is Ocm?

Bucharest · 03/03/2012 13:33

Astral in a lighter blue pot than the Nivea is even better as it has a nicer texture. I slap it on my neck all the time and have no lines there (am 46)

Vaseline Vaseline Vaseline. Nicer than horrid, smelly, gloopy 8hr slimey gloop any day of the week.

Collection 2000's version of YSL Touche Eclat is a) cheaper b) better c) doesn't stink of dirty dishcloths after a few days.

I read on a thread here that Bourjois Helth MIx foundation is a deadringer for By Terry but haven't tried either.

Lulumama · 03/03/2012 13:36

Barry M lipgloss in the tube, like juicy tubes but £4.95, shade number 4 is the best one ever... been using it for years.

Aldi does a really good powder compact for under a fiver too

I've used baby oil to take off my make up for about 15 years .... nothing beats it ... i squirt it in the bath too and slap on afterwards and i am all lovely and smooth, you have to make sure to clean the bath out or the next person in it goes arse over tit !

MissFoodie · 03/03/2012 13:48

coconut oil here

sweet almond oil for body, hands, nails, etc

boots natural collection make up, if you're on a tight budget

bar of soap instead of shower gel

veet bikini line and shave legs/underarms

MissFoodie · 03/03/2012 13:49

ps and I do brazilian with veet, never had a prob ;)

nannipigg · 03/03/2012 14:51

OOh veet....makes me cringe just thinking about my trip to A+E with chemical burns on very sensitive areas!!!lol

MissFoodie · 03/03/2012 15:14

noooooooo? really?????????

slapmeonthepatio · 03/03/2012 15:16

Actually, the only encounter I've ever had with veet resulted in burns, too. Was only on my legs thankfully.

FrozenPetisPois · 03/03/2012 16:26

Marking my place, am looking at reducing my s&b monthly budget!

janx · 03/03/2012 18:02

Still no wiser about OCM - anyone?
