Is it acceptable to go knickerless?

:) OK, it's a serious question!

I have my 40th birthday party next week.

This is what I'll be wearing, with leopard print shoes. Tis very flattering on, but I don't think I can wear any knickers with it! I tried on my thinnest microfibre ones today, but they are a short shape & showed slightly. I HATE thongs & think even the outline of one will show too. Tried a cycling-shorts style hold-in mega pair but think I will be so hot I'll end up ditching them half way through the evening! Plus DH said they didn't make enough of a difference to how the dress looked to warrant wearing them. So I ended up wearing no knickers whilst modelling it for DH. He of course thinks this is brilliant, but he would wouldn't he?

Is this acceptable or a big no-no? The dress is a decent length so that's not an issue, I dunno, it just doesn't feel quite right at my age Arrrgghh!

Yay or nay (in which case, solution please!)

I've done it with trousers but never a dress whatever the length - just can't. Have visions of falling over legs akimbo with an audience Blush

ameliagrey · 25/02/2012 08:50

No dress should be so tight that it shows your knicker line- that's just vulgar. If it does, then you could try wearing a full length slip.???

Re. wearing no knickers with a tight fitting dress- sorry if this is TMI but unless you are veyr dry there is a chance that discharge/moisture etc will show through on the dress after you have been sitting down for a while.

Have you tried hi leg knickers?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 25/02/2012 09:05

If you are re thinking the knicker thing, M&S do lovely seemless knickers that are brilliant for this kind of thing - they are very fine and you can't see them.

I have just had a look, but can't find them online, but def in store.

There's nothing wrong with going knickerless - but if you are going to spend the evening worrying about marks then it's going to spoil it, isn't it.

Amelia - ??? Weird thing to say, a dress doesn't have to be particularly tight to be able to see a knicker line.

Msarsebiscuit · 25/02/2012 09:18

Can I just say that when I've ventured down No-Knicker Street there has been no moist marking of my clothing.

And a teeny bit of risk and vulgarity can be quite beneficial on occasion.

Sparklegeek · 25/02/2012 11:01

Hmmm, am worried now about being "vulgar"! Though that opinion does seem to be the minority :o I think it's the style of the dress rather than it being too small for me that's giving the VPL, it fits like a glove everywhere & I know going up a size just wouldn't work. It's supposed to be v fitted, I bet the ASOS model isn't wearing underwear!

Re the TMI marks issue - I won't be sitting down I wouldn't imagine so don't think that'd be too much of a risk!

May have a look in M & S if I go in to town this week, just to see. If only to stop the worry of that seam busting & me never being able to show my face in public again...

Does it really matter if you can see your knicker-line through it. We all wear them [though clearly not everyone all the time Wink ] so I can't see what the problem is tbh. I'd probably wear the cycling shorts type things you mentioned if I was concerened about VPL regardless of whether or not they pull you in elsewhere. It won't be that hot in early March surely?

I would wear some knickers. i would feel really uncomfortable with out any and like someone else said if you sit down etc.

You would be worrying if you accidently open your legs etc

motherinferior · 25/02/2012 11:30

I don't wear pants in hot weather. I go about my normal life in perfectly respectable cotton dresses, and nobody - well, nobody except half the internet obviously - is aware that beneath my frock I am comfortably commando.

BalloonSlayer · 25/02/2012 11:31

arf at "you should wear a full length slip"

No, what you should wear is six layers of petticoats, with hoops, trimmed with antique belgian lace. Otherwise you are a hussy and no better than you ought to be.

Sparklegeek · 25/02/2012 11:54

Hahahaha Balloon Obviously I AM no better than I ought to be. As are most others on this thread, although opinion is now dividing! (Must've been a hussy Friday night crowd last night all saying do it!)

Mejon yes it does matter, call me vain but I just don't like a VPL! It will be hot, I plan to be dancing all night, this is one occasion where I have got to choose the entire playlist so there's nothing I'll want to sit out for! So I do think the up-to-the-bra-down -to-the-knees cycling shorts will be too hot...

allthequeensmen · 25/02/2012 11:56

Am I weird or are the discharge people on this thread?! Unless I'm ovulating I would never produce enough discharge during one evening to have to worry about sitting down/ feeling it, surely it just stays up in between your er.. lips?! Is it maybe because I haven't had kids? I have gone knickerless several times when wearing pencil skirts/ dresses and have never had drips or wet patches

LOL at the comment about tight dresses being vulgar. Believe me OP that is a vampy killer dress and you're gonna feel a million dollars in it, not vulgar. Anyway even floaty silk numbers can show your panty line.

DonInKillerHeels · 25/02/2012 11:56

Ahem. When going knickerless you should always wear a tampon....

but otherwise, go for it.

motherinferior · 25/02/2012 12:15

I can assure you that you can conduct daily life quite decorously without pants. And the lack of cladding around the crotch enables you to beam, serenely and coolly, at those around you.

ameliagrey · 25/02/2012 12:24

Contrary to the opinion I may have given earlier, I too have gone knickerless- once while shopping. I was wearing a rather full skirt at the time- knee length.

As for moisture well if there is anything on your knickers at the end of the evening, this is what you may find is on your dress. I know we all very different down there, but I would not risk no knickers and a tight bum hugging dress.

it is a nice dress but TBH I don't see anything too awful in people knowing you have knickers on underneath if the VPL is only slightly visible which it would be if you worse the aforementioned M&S VPL knickers.

motherinferior · 25/02/2012 12:32

OP, you want to go knickerless, don't you. Admit it. Go on, go on, go on....

notnowImreading · 25/02/2012 12:36

Wolford do very nice tights with no seams that might serve the purpose - they cost about as much as the dress though, which is why I only visit them in the shop rather than buy them.

If you are going commando, remember to trim the bush. Nothing worse than a visible mound of nice 1970s pubes outlined through the front of a clingy frock (I saw this in a nightclub once in the mid 90s and still snigger when I think about it) Grin

Sparklegeek · 25/02/2012 13:08

Can't do tights, think they'd look odd with the dress. But wahahahahahaha at the visible bush O.M.G.

Re moisture - only a problem I'd have thought if you sit down? Otherwise dress isn't underneath? Am not planning on sitting down, see previous post.

I would actually rather wear knickers than not, but only if I can find completely invisible ones. But only if. Am prepared for knickerless, would rather that than VPL. Think that looks so cheap. (And obviously no knickers is v classy Wink )

OP posts:
MrsSchadenfreude · 25/02/2012 13:09

Go knickerless - I have done, on occasion, and tell your other half, halfway through the evening. Grin If you ooze copiously pop up a tampon to deal with the worst of the goo.

My mother would tell you that what you need under that dress is a pair of Big Pants, a pantie girdle, tights on top of that, and a full length slip (nylon, for preference). But if you take her advice, don't expect hot sex (am only child).

Codandchops · 25/02/2012 13:17

I am being introduced to the local Bishop tomorrow and have nice dress for the occasion but to avoid VPL am considering going commando...or is that wrong ?Confused

Glad I am not the only one who leaves em in the draw sometimes.

Sparklegeek · 25/02/2012 13:19

Now meeting the Bishop without them on takes it to a whole new level...

OP posts:
Ephiny · 25/02/2012 13:22

I guess my concern would be that if the dress is tight enough to show the outline of your knickers, it's probably going to show up every little bump or bulge you might have....though if you have the kind of figure where that isn't a concern, then go for it!

Personally I'd probably rather wear a pair of Spanx or something, the dress looks very unforgiving...

missfairlie · 25/02/2012 13:23

Wear knickers or wear tights instead. Going without either is pretty rank when you are likely to get warm. Wearing a tampon to deal with the situation outside your period is just wrong, sorry.

Sparklegeek · 25/02/2012 13:35

Ephily you'd think that dress would be unforgiving but it actually isn't as the jersey fabric is thick not thin, it is quite rigid so holds me in pretty well.

Am hoping I can get away without the hold-in pants, I did get some but they didn't make any difference really to how the dress looked. I've been dieting & Shredding since Christmas (already ran/gymmed 5 days a week) & am now 9 st 8 & 5ft 9. Not sure whether it's worth the discomfort of the underwear as combined with the dress they would severely hamper my dancing!
