So, I want to wax my bikini line - anyone else do it themselves?

I'm going to Boots later so will hopefully be buying some self waxing things for the bikini line. I'm a complete novice so am I likely to balls it up? anyone else do it themselves?

I love the hair on my forearms. In summer, the sun makes them all golden.

MorrisZapp · 23/02/2012 18:21

Also being Scottish 'nair' makes me think 'nae hair' :)

Northey · 23/02/2012 18:23

So. Nair. When you say you can use it anywhere, do you mean round the back? Or inwards onto skin that kind of edges the area where it changes to mucous membrane?

pluckingupcourage · 23/02/2012 18:24

I thought saucepan had a double meaning I wasn't aware of Wallace.

I am off to get some Nair sensitive toddlerama (do you really mean everywhere or am I going to have chemical burns?)

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 19:37

I didn't say disgusting I said horrible...to be honest I find it much worse with dark hair (which I have) - to me it is just the same as having hairy legs...

Yep - nair sensitive is fine for me every day - don't need it 'round the back or near the membrane' Grin everyday but the mons gets it every morning and I have never had an adverse reaction...

yellowraincoat · 23/02/2012 20:19

Yes, it is just the same as hairy legs...which are also not horrible or disgusting.

MegIet · 23/02/2012 20:36

yes. Have done my own bikini and brazillian for over 10yrs now.

It seems dead easy to me, but I think I've just got the knack of it. I use the hot microwave wax and use old tea towels for the strips. I cut lots of different sizes so I can do the fiddly bits Grin. The pre-waxed ones aren't as good IME.

pluckingupcourage · 23/02/2012 21:50

great, I am going to hunt down some nair sensitive and have a go (avoiding membrane however Grin )

Xenna · 23/02/2012 22:54

Good luck with whatever you use. I am sure it will be fine.Just follow the instructions. I' ve always waxed my bikini line myself with warm wax(veet) and have never had any problems. You need to pull your skin tight with one hand and pull the strip to the opposite direction of the hair growth with the other hand. I do each side in two or three parts so that the pulling is short and easier. Don't hesitate, just pull it quickly- it will be almost painless. I use an epilator for armpits and legs.

Northey · 23/02/2012 23:37

With the Nair, what does it actually DO? Dissolve all the hair to nothingness? Or dissolve it at the base? Do you have to scrape to remove hair?

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 23:57

yes it dissolves the hair at the point it leaves the skin - in fact it pretty much burns it off (like a bleach burn, not a fire burn). I scrape it off with a plastic spoon Blush but s sponge or flannel will also work (a spoon sounds weird I know but I find it is the most hygenic way-I don't put it in the cutlery drawer!!). Some of the creams come with plastic scrapers. I epilate my legs and arms too - tried to epilate the garden and it was way too painful and awkward!!

Northey · 24/02/2012 00:23

See, I can epilate the frontal edges of my bikini area no problem. I just want to go a little further underneath than usual, and that's where the epilator becomes hopelessly painful and skin-rippy. I shall buy some Nair tomorrow.

Northey · 24/02/2012 00:25

Do you have to scrape hard?

(and thank you, btw!)

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 00:28

no - it's a very gentle 'glide' Grin

Queenofcake · 24/02/2012 00:30

I dont get the advantage of cream.

Its stinks and is messy or maybe thats just me and the regrowth is the same as shaving.

I wax - have attempted bikini line and little bit more myself and it was a bit of a patchy affair so have used a professional ever since and its quicker and alot less painful.

pluckingupcourage · 24/02/2012 00:36

I epilate everywhere else. I agree that waxing is probably the best thing and I've been having professional bikini waxes for a while now, but I bruise (and bleed) so much that I only get a few days of no-bruise, no-regrowth. I wouldn't like to shave in that area so I will have a go with the depilatory cream.

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 00:38

totally agree with you queen but whilst the regrowth is the same - you don't get the shaving rash that you do with shaving - I tried shaving when I was a teen and it brought me out it red boil-type spots - was awful!! I find the cream convenient and easy (shaving was also very awkward, epilation hurt and you have to grow a decent amount of hair to wax).

I went to a salon every 3-4 weeks for a hollywood when I was living on my own and the results afterwards were definately the best possible but they only ever lasted me about 6days before the stubble came in...it came back really fast for about 2 or 3 days and then would slow down to a snails pace (no matter how much I exfoliated). It was just plain annoying. I would get it all lasered off if I could afford to...

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 00:42

My friend used to bruise terribly when she got waxed - she showed me once and it looked like someone had gone into the garden and dug up all the flower beds!! She did find a wax that agreed with her though - I asked her earlier and she wasn't sure what type they use but she goes to Harvey Nicks in Manc - maybe call them and ask what type of wax they use?

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 24/02/2012 00:45

Tried it once = never, ever again. I simply cannot inflict that level of pain on myself.

Salon.

pluckingupcourage · 24/02/2012 06:22

thanks mrsm, would be good to find out what the wax was. I've had some expert waxers have a go, but I think that being thin skinned and super pale (I bruise easily anyway) and having mysteriously wirey pubic hair is not a winning combination. Am going to have an attempt with nair tonight (living the dream!).

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/02/2012 06:35

I go to Harvey Nichols in Bristol and its the strip wax bar - so its hot wax they use that is then peeled off without using fabric strips if that makes sense.

Its the most effective and painless wax I've ever had - but not cheap. Pretty much £50 for a brazilian.

MorrisZapp · 24/02/2012 09:15

I had a salon job last year and for a while I maintained it by tweezering away the regrowth when it appeared.

Then life got in the way and the garden grew wild again. So today I'm off to buy some nae hair sensitive, so I can clear the undergrowth and start again.

Thanks ladies, this has been inspiring!

MorrisZapp · 24/02/2012 09:16

Ps love the idea of getting a Brazilian at a 'strip wax bar', is that like a nail bar? ;)

MorrisZapp · 24/02/2012 09:20

Ps mrsmartin, you sound quite spendy on the beauty front, have you considered buying the Phillips lumea or similar? My sis and I were talking about going halves on one.

BiscuitNibbler · 24/02/2012 09:42

Does anyone know why you supposedly can't use depilatory creams on a scar?
