worth getting colours done? and where?

hi there. i am feeling generally rubbish at the moment - having recently had a huge life change, i am now a SAHM and have lost all sense of myself and seem to have stopped bothering with trying to look half decent as no longer going to work . so i need to get a grip and start taking some care/pride in myself so at least i can feel better about something...

i was wondering if it was worth getting my 'colours' done? i have heard a lot about it. what do they doexactly? i was thinking that it may stop me wasting money that i no longer have by buying lots of things that dont go/dont suit. or is it not that kind of thing? i need to make sure that everything i buy now really works and hope that my weight doesnt change now i am feeling fed up and bingeing on biscuits and not fruit all day!

ps am in south - hampshire/wiltshire/dorset area if that helps with any recommendations
thank you

Hi, in same position as you, lost SAHMdom! Had mine done on Saturday morning, really excellent. House of Colour. Good luck!

Tirana · 20/02/2012 18:33

I had mine done with House of Colour, they seem to always get good feedback on here and I thought it was really good and worth the money which was a £100 in the north east.

They basically cover your hair with a white cloth and put a white smock on you to just leave your face exposed then hold about a 100 switches of fabric in different colours against your face. Some really look great and some are draining. In the end you are given a season of colour - I'm a winter jewel and need to wear bright clear colours like cerise and jade green etc.

It makes shopping clearer and easier, defo recommend it to you if your feeling a bit overwhelmed with what to buy.

janmoomoo · 20/02/2012 19:46

I would recommend it. It definitely means you dont buy things that are a waste of money because they dont suit you but you are not quite sure why!

My wardrobe didnt change overnight, but after about 18 months I now have a cupboard full of things that I know suit me, that all go together etc. I havent had the morning "clothes crisis" for ages.

Go for it I say!

JeanBodel · 20/02/2012 19:51

Ooh, ooh, I'm getting this done tomorrow. I'm in Wiltshire and am going with House of Colour.

I am not at all into fashion or looking good, if I'm honest, but I like to think that on the rare occasions when I choose to scrub up, I dress suitably and with taste. Hence me going to House of Colour, because I just can't decide whether or not brown is a good colour on me. :)

Also, I've heard they'll flog you the perfect shade of lipstick, and I could really do with a bit of colour on my face.

Onlyaphase · 20/02/2012 19:51

I had mine done earlier this year at House of Colour. Loved it, and it has made so much difference to the way I dress now. Its given me clarity, impetus and a focus for thinking about clothes and colour in general.

I've managed to declutter my wardrobe, charity shopping and Ebaying all sorts of stuff so far. It is so nice to open my wardrobe and only have things that fit and suit me hanging up in there, and to have a relatively empty wardrobe as well, it is very freeing in an odd way. All I've bought so far is about 3 scarves and a couple of Tshirts from Sainsburys, so it isn't costing me a fortune yet. Shopping is so much easier now too.

babygsmummy · 20/02/2012 21:55

I had mine done at work, luckily I get 50% of for my uniform at work.
My whole wardrode has changed I never wear black anymore and my style has changed.I now wear everything in my wardrode (not all at once lol) instead of 25% of it.I actully enjoy shopping now.

The maddest thing for me was that she told me I had green eyes I was 34 and always thought they were blue.

Because I have seen the benifits I would definatley get it done.good luck and enjoy.

shelley72 · 21/02/2012 07:43

thank you for all your replies. i am going to start making enquries today about going for a session. does it take long? was wondering if it was the sort of thing i could take DD to, or if i would be better waiting for a weekend appointment so i could go in peace alone? maybe she could do her colours too Wink

jeanbodel is there anyone that you could recommend, as you're in wiltshire? and poppycat04 does the 'lost' feeling you get when you become SAHM stay - i am only a few weeks in and feel a bit Shock by it all. it sounds as though it has really worked for all of you!

I'm in the same area as you as keep meaning to get mine done. There is someone in ringwood iirc.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 21/02/2012 08:01

Thankyou for starting this thread!
I'm in exactly the same position and this sounds a great idea - iv just googled them and found my local rep so thankyou.
Let's hope we both feel better soon !

KristinaM · 21/02/2012 08:06

It takes several hours so worth going at a weekend if you are nit bf

If yiu are bf thne go now while baby is tiny

Loads of threads on MN abut SAHMs who feel a bit lost style wise so you arr defo not alone

shelley72 · 21/02/2012 08:29

well yes i am still feeding tho DD is now 21 mo so she will manage without me for a few hours! as for the SAHM thing, i had no idea (possibly i am terribly naive) that being a full time mum would affect me so much - and not just in terms of how i look etc. i am def a worse mummy for it i think, though i am hoping its just the initial shock and it will all come good soon ...
will check out the lady in ringwood then Smile

I haven't had mine done properly but would love to! Having said that, I have worked out from basics that I am pretty much an Autumn, not sure about warm, cool etc. but definitely it has helped me avoid colours that really don't suit me (bye bye black and grey!)
Friends of mine had it done and it cost them about £100 each as well, so I think that's about standard - good luck, enjoy it! :)

BloooCowWonders · 21/02/2012 11:45

House of colour here too - FAB!!!

I wanted to go do I could have a good clear out of clothes. I'm left with everything that suits me now. I'm a deep summer by the way. :)

But I was quite shocked by the result as is always liked wearing rust/ orange/ muddy colours. Completely wrong for me, and when she puts the right colours around you the transformation is amazing!

Do it:)

KristinaM · 21/02/2012 12:06

Sorry shelly, i misread and thought your baby was only a few months. Well defo go without her, i dont think they would let you take a mobille baby anyway. You need to be able to comcentrate.

If you have the spare ££ i would go for it

shelley72 · 21/02/2012 15:44

my goodness, there are a few consultants that seem to be in my area. any tips on finding a good one - or do you just choose one who looks good in their photo?! also it seems that they do classes in 2's or 3's - so do i need to find someone else to come with me?

OP posts:
daisie4 · 21/02/2012 17:25

Has anyone used a consultant in the Bristol area that they could recommend?

JeanBodel · 22/02/2012 10:12

You don't need to find anyone to go with you, the consultant will sort all that out.

It is really good that it's not 1-1. You get a lot out of seeing the transformation of another person - it's quite amazing.

shelley72 · 22/02/2012 11:13

have booked Smile.

it turns out that it will be a 1-1 session as i can only go on a saturday. i do hope its ok, as she tried to sell me a style day too (i hate the hard sell)? still i am looking forward to it and hopefully it will be ok, although i may find that my whole wardrobe doesnt suit, then i will have a problem!

OP posts:
Grockle · 23/02/2012 13:49

When are you going, Shelley? Will you report back?

jocesar · 23/02/2012 13:59

Who have you booked with Shelley?

BearlyThere · 23/02/2012 14:01

i had mine done
VERY good
DM me shellster

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 23/02/2012 14:18

Good luck with it. It's definitely worthwhile. The style day is even more useful imo - but they usually won't do that until you've had the colours sorted.
I guess your lady is a bit more upfront about fiilling her slots!

shelley72 · 24/02/2012 17:35

hi yes i am going to a lady in fordingbridge next week, was quite excited until she emailed me to say i must NOT wear any make up to the appointment Shock. since reading about it on MN i think that i may be a winter of some description - dark hair, dark eyes - but we will see!

OP posts:
Grockle · 02/03/2012 19:31

Did you go, Shelley?

harbingerofdoom · 02/03/2012 20:22

No make-up Shock the only time I wore no make-up was in hospital. That can't be right surely....

Otherwise I'd think of having it done.
