Has anyone found a cure for pimply upper arms (Keratosis Pilaris) ?

chocolatespiders · 19/02/2012 09:59

This is for my DD who hates her upper arms. I have googled and found an old thread on here about using soap and glory scrub your nose in it so we will try that.
There was also mention of cream from GP - does anyone know the name of this cream.

Any other magic remedies for Keratosis Pilaris.

Thankyou

I would suggest you don't need any of these treatments but simply supplement with Vitamin A as the condition has been linked to a mild Vit A deficiency. Worked for me!

HipHopOpotomus · 21/02/2012 12:17

of course you should exercise caution with Vit A supplement levels (stick to recommended doses) especially if you are PG (no vit A supplements at all), however you can safely take lots of Beta Caratene which the body will convert to VitA. So lots of carrot juice and other coloured veggies may help.

I really do think that those of you who have ordered the salicylic acid ointment will see results. I used to have truly awful keratosis pilaris, but it has now gone completely (although flares up again if I stop using the ointment). I tried all sorts of things over the years, and had several GPs tell me that I just needed to moisturise more, but it took a really sympathetic GP (whose wife had suffered from it) to prescribe this ointment. I'm impressed that you've found it online, will order from there from now on to avoid a trip to the GP.

If urea is good then I'm going to try Balneum, DS was prescribed it for his eczema but then switched to something else, so we have loads left...

I'm determined to exfoliate too. I enjoy it (fruity smell addict - walking past the Body Shop was my saving grace when I had morning sickness!) but I am lazy and TERRIBLE at the whole self-care thing.

Might take a vitamin A supplement as well, and will look into the salicylic acid thingy - disputandum do you think I might be able to get it prescribed?

I had these for years quite badly til a dietician (who I went to see for something else) asked if I had them and said they were a sign of low omega 3. I now take a daily omega 3 fish oil capsule and now just have a very few x

The doctor told us that it genetic, is a result of deformed hair follicles and therefore there is no cure, only ways of improving it.

Goodness knows why it seems to occur mostly on the upper arms?

chocolatespiders · 21/02/2012 19:12

springaroundthecorner- let us know how you get on... Fingers crossed something works.. your first post about your son really pulled at my heart.

I have found another soap and glory face scrub in my draw called the greatest scrub of all and it has the acid thing in. But I am going to go and buy the scrub your face in it one- I used to use it on my face and loved it so it will be a good excuse to treat myself to it again.

Labradorlover- where did you order the acid ointment from?

I've only just realised I also have this on my thighs - much worse than my arms. I hate my thighs because of how they look, so much so that I never look at them or do anything to improve them. Now I've made the connection.

I honestly never knew it was a proper condition - mum told me it was part of my eczema as a child and I never questioned it.

Labradorlover · 24/02/2012 11:58

Chocolatespider Total pharmacy, link on page 2.

Don't know about a vit A deficiency as I've been taking high strength cod liver oil ( spoon from a bottle...hardcore...) for years for my joints.

springaroundthecorner · 04/03/2012 15:22

My son has been using the Soap and Glory spot on with the salicylic acid in it every night on his face for a week now. There is a definite improvement. The skin isnt as red a usual and the texture has improved. He even has it in his eyebrows and they are tons better too. His skin hasnt dried out too much but I am encouraging him to alternate the night time S & G with the Avene anti redness cream too.

I also bought the Flexitol. I will be using it on my arms when the weather gets warmer and will meanwhile stick to my routine of scrubbing and moisturising them.

Once again Chocolatespider, thanks! :)

PerryCombover · 04/03/2012 16:10

Glycolic acid lotion is excellent

anniewoo · 04/03/2012 16:25

Didn't find the Flexitol good.,awfully thick too.

Danceswithdragons · 04/03/2012 16:47

I have found regular use of a body scrub (I use any old one which is on offer!) and bio-oil improves it a lot. It also improves in the summer, when I expose my arms (but not my thighs!) to the sun.

I also read somewhere that neem oil soap is meant to be good too, but I haven't tried it myself.

chocolatespiders · 01/04/2012 18:51

springaroundthecorner- How is he getting on.. Is it the Soap and glory Scrub your nose in it that he is using..

I havent been able to find the Glycolic acid lotion so cant report on that.

Which soap and glory scrub is it? Is it the breakfast smoothie one? Just in boots!

Tiamaria14 · 18/03/2021 11:36

They have a lot of choice on amazon, the acid soap bars and different acid lotions.
my grandaughter has it too, on her face, it's just wading thru all these different creams, its mind blowing. Good luck.

Nitpickpicnic · 20/03/2021 12:26

See the reviews of Paula’s Choice weightless body lotion (2% BHA). Lots of people rate it well for KP. Proper active ingredients.

Carycy · 20/03/2021 15:50

I use a cleanser ( cerave skin smoothing cleanser) that has salyicilic acid in it on my face and extend down to my arms when I am in the shower. To lazy to faff around with specialist products for my arms.

Insomniacexpress · 20/03/2021 19:54

Exfoliate and then quite thick cream, everyday, religiously. I use the Paula’s Choice bha and aha exfoliant for the face on my arms. They also do a specific combo marketed towards KP.

Mellowandfruitful · 20/03/2021 21:33

Ameliorate cream. Specifically for bumpy skin like this. Works on me. Not even that expensive.

strongnosugar · 20/03/2021 21:46

Second the Ameliorate.

WhereAreWeNow · 21/03/2021 06:53

I got a CeraVe lotion especially for this for my DD - I think it contains salicylic acid and urea - but it didn't do anything so we gave up.
