Has anyone found a cure for pimply upper arms (Keratosis Pilaris) ?

chocolatespiders · 19/02/2012 09:59

This is for my DD who hates her upper arms. I have googled and found an old thread on here about using soap and glory scrub your nose in it so we will try that.
There was also mention of cream from GP - does anyone know the name of this cream.

Any other magic remedies for Keratosis Pilaris.

Thankyou

Dry Body Oil seems to work for me. Used the Good Works one till they stopped making it or selling it in Boots.
Dry body brushing helps but those scrubby net things you use in the shower made my KP worse.

I have repeat prescriptions of 2% salicylic ointment from the GP (I have never found anywhere to buy this directly).

A 500g tub lasts all year, used twice a day initially and then easing off to once a day. It's quite thick but clear and doesn't smell of anything. The only thing I've found to work, although the sun does improve things too.

I get rid of mine with exfoliating gloves in the shower and decleor prolagene gel after the shower (also has the added benefit of keeping the skin nice and toned - less bingo-wingy!!! Grin)

latrucha · 19/02/2012 12:44

If you can get rid of this, I'll be delighted. I didn't know you could. Does the redness go too? I hate my upper arms.

latrucha · 19/02/2012 12:46

You can get that exfoliator PastGrace linked to on Amazon BTW. Just googled.

PastGrace · 19/02/2012 12:51

Thanks latrucha

I use one of those sponges that are like a pan scrub. Every day. I then use any old body cream. Seems to do the trick.

Agree that sunny holidays help but might be a tad expensive to relocate for this reason alone Grin

bushymcbush · 19/02/2012 13:25

I use an exfoliating scrub of any kind (currently favouring Boots mango sugar scrub) every time I have a shower. Then I use Boots own version of Flexitol, which smells far nicer and does just as good a job. It is thick and sticky but it really does work on me. Twice a day to start off, then once a day, then once it's under control just once or twice a week seems to keep it at bay.

Sorry for sounding like a Boots ad!

chocolatespiders I remember that original thread and I saved the link for the recommended product as my daughter has these spots. It was this that lots of people suggested if it helps

I'm a big believer in good diet leading to good skin being more important than creams.

plenty of oily fish
avocados
or take omega3 and vit E
drink plenty water
turn down heating

otchayaniye · 19/02/2012 15:02

My dermatologist friend says diet (within healthy norms) and drinking water make no difference at all. But you might as well eat a good diet and stay adequately hydrated for your general health and well being.

Turning down the heating is a good idea however.

I'd like to get my hands on that salicylic ointment though. Can I ask my gp?

otchayaniye · 19/02/2012 15:03

It appears you can get it here

Theres a huge long thread in S&B history about this. Flexitol is the answer.

MrsCampbellBlack · 19/02/2012 15:55

I've just ordered that salicylic ointment and will see how I get on. Hope its less pongy than flexitol.

fuzzPigwickPapers · 19/02/2012 17:59

I actually exfoliated and moisturised for the first time in aaaaaages. I realised I am more embarrassed about my rough bumpy upper arms than I am about the multitude of very obvious self harm scars on my forearms. Hmm

It will be nice if I can reduce it a bit :)

rocket74 · 19/02/2012 18:07

The Sanctuary Salt Scrub helped with mine - and also helped a friend psoriasis so might be worth a try. Mine came back with a vengeance after pregnancy.

chocolatespiders · 19/02/2012 20:10

Lots of really good suggestions - thankyou

We should start up a group and do blind testing of all these products to see what works..

Would be interested to know if the salicylic ointment works MrsCampbellBlack- postage seems high on that website but worth it if it works

Neostrata Glycolic body lotion - has glycolic acid so kind of exfoliates as it moisturises ) very, very good results IMO ( I use it everywhere now, not just arms)

MrsCampbellBlack · 19/02/2012 20:51

I'll report back

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/02/2012 20:56

i have this on my thighs and upper arms.... would the creams recommended work on thighs too do you reckon? ive always wondered what it was, i looked like a sodding plucked chicken....

MillyMollyMardy · 19/02/2012 21:03

Just asked DH who makes cosmetics, same answer; exfoliation and something with Salicylic acid (lots of spot creams have it).

bubble2bubble · 19/02/2012 21:03

Absolutely - I had a bit on my legs also, now gone. I think body brushing's good for keeping it at bay too

bonzo77 · 19/02/2012 22:16

I used to have it on arms and backs of upper thighs. My arms are now completely clear. As a teenager I used to scrub them with a green pan scourer and then use my mother's vaseline intensive care. I think that, post pubertal hormones and sunshine have done wonders. The backs of my thighs are still a bit grim, but I do nothing to them and they are their best if they get some sunshine. So never really! Google "tend skin". You can make a home made version by dissolving aspirin in witch hazel then mixing with surgical spirit. The aspirin is like salicylic acid, the witch hazel is anti inflammatory and the surgical spirit is an antiseptic. I found it quite good on my thighs, but am not using it as TTC and you can't use salicylic acid while pg.

Labradorlover · 21/02/2012 10:26

Have ordered the salicylic ointment too. Had looked up the old thread about flexitol the other week, as I have this on the tops of my arms and all over my thighs. After a week of flexitol, I am very soft, but no difference to the bumps yet.

springaroundthecorner · 21/02/2012 11:35

Having told my son (who has this condition on his face as well as his arms)about this thread I am off to Boots for the Flexitrol and Soap and Glory today! I have it on my arms so might do one of each and see how I go.

If they dont help I will try his GP for the Salycilic Acid ointment as he is wonderfully sympathetic about it but couldnt come up with any specific treatment.

Thank you very much OP for starting this thread.
