New bowl of crisps, tuck in Ruby!

I am thrilled at this Pixi lust. Another of their things wot I like is the cheek gel in natural. It doesn't stay on very long but while it does it's well pretty.

I felt a bit rubbish yesterday and spent much too long hunched over the computer looking at not very edifying things. Today is better. Have shredded, spot cleaned the stair carpet, written a letter to DD who will be at an outdoor pursuity place with school next week and am now going out to buy some fabric conditioner at Wilkos. When the mice are away the cat does rather boring things, it would seem Blush.

Thanks for the offer Stropps, but dp, non violent man that he is, would probably beat you to it....I have never (in (cough) 25 years) seen him quite so angry.
Don't think we would want to extend (big enough for us), more concerned we might be stuck with rubbish ill-fitting windows and thus humoungous heating bills and a rattling draft....

oldqueenie · 08/03/2012 21:50

well in theory you can do nothing without permission... and it being granted or denied wil depend on how much you want to alter the original layout / appearance etc. in short dont buy something listed if you want to change it too much! and if you do get permission there will be conditions about the type of materials etc to be used (ie expensive!).

Blackduck · 08/03/2012 21:52

We are not big converters so I suspect that wouldn't be an issue! As long as we are allowed inside plumbing!!

oldqueenie · 08/03/2012 21:52

oops. x posts bd. you could always approach the relevant body (english heritage and council??) and ask hypothetically...

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/03/2012 21:53

We had to replace wooden sash window with wooden sash window, but had double glazing fitted, which helped with draughts.

oldqueenie · 08/03/2012 21:54

yeah, plumbing probably acceptable!

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/03/2012 21:54

And the cost of replacing a sash window (just the one) cost about the same as a monthly mortgage repayment, from what I remember.

Blackduck · 08/03/2012 22:09

Ahhh MrsS see that's what I don't want to hear....
Anyway we'll have a look, is about the only possibility on the market at the moment.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/03/2012 22:13

I love the way the rest of S & B is discussing BB cream, Kate Middleton's figure, makeup etc, and we are on windows and plumbing!

I have just worked out that we have 13 windows in the flat, so should be grateful, really, that just one needed replacing.

wilbur · 08/03/2012 22:13

God, yes, the cost of sash windows. I long for new ones to block out noise and draughts but we got a quote... I nearly had a heart attack.

CointreauVersial · 09/03/2012 13:15

Good old UPVC double-glazing, eh? No danger of anyone listing the monstrosity we live in; it is so unattractive that the estate agent details didn't even include a shot of the front of the house. Grin

news just in from baby friend

Looks like though the baby did suffer a little brain damage from her stopping breathing, it's pretty minor and shouldn't actually affect her too much, which is brilliant news. I seem to remember reading that the brain can adapt to bits dying off, especially when it's young. Is that right.

Re listed flats, etc, my friends recently had their listed early Victorian flat in Islington remodelled, and had to get permission to move the internal walls, etc. Ridiculous, as the walls they wanted to move were actually put up in the 70s, and they wanted to make it more as it was when built, but that's bureaucracy for you.

Re sash windows, indeed. We've had a quote for getting on for £1000 to replace just ONE window. Unsurprisingly, we opted for some £6.99 window film instead.

Ooh! Just noticed my charity's upcoming table top sale is advertised on the front page of mumsnet (well, in my 'local' bit). We shall be swamped!

Blackduck · 09/03/2012 13:23

CV :) From what I can gather the key 'feature' of this listed building is the front door Hmm
Dp has gone into overdrive and we have four viewings on Monday in a space of two hours. Taking into account the getting to each one I reckon that is 20 minutes max per house - I guess he's looking for quick decision making! (Mind you I can usually if its a 'no' as soon as I set foot through the front door!)
Anyway could be interestng!!

CointreauVersial · 09/03/2012 13:31

Herbs - I suffered from infantile epilepsy as a very small baby; the fits were eventually brought under control by the time I was 6 months old by the use of large doses of steroids. The doctor told my mother that I had undoubtedly suffered brain damage and to expect the worst. If we were very lucky, then I might just make it to mainstream school ("Educationally Sub Normal" was the best hope, apparently).

Anyway, we drank a toast to that doctor when I got into Oxford..... Grin

Good luck with the new viewings, BD; I am certain you will find something even better than the one you lost.

wilbur · 09/03/2012 14:22

Yes, good luck with the viewings, BD. Hope the perfect house is out there for you. At least you get to have a good snoop around other people's houses. Or is it just nosey old me that likes doing that?

Herbs - that sounds v positive about your friend and although I am not an expert I think there is a lot of evidence that brains do the most incredible job of compensating if there has been damage. Is she breathing completely normally now? I know a little girl who is the younger sister of a friend of dd's who had a similar story to CV's, brain damage predicted through infant epilepsy, likely she would not develop normally, but she's 4 or 5 now and running about absolutely fine.

bigTillyMint · 09/03/2012 14:35

Good news Herbs then by the sounds of it Smile

We have a period house (well, London Victorian Terraced) with UPVC doubleglazed windows. I was all for changing them when we moved in, till I realised the cost of replacing, the lack of drafts and no need for painting them Wink

BD, good luck!

We have out-laws for the weekend (will be there when I get in!) - FIL and BIL will take up most of the sitting room and drink the beer cupboard dry.....

TheReturnOfStropperella · 09/03/2012 15:06

Good luck, BD - hope you find something that appeals.

Herbs, sounds like things are looking up for your friend's baby, fingers crossed.

An annoying (well, to me, anyway) catalogue landed on our doormat this morning. As I am struggling to concentrate on a rather dull document, I thought I would procrastinate a bit over a coffee and peruse the contents of this catalogue. Did someone mention big pants a while back? Here, what about these ?

And then I saw this and I realised that I have a fabulous new business idea. I will go to the garage and rifle through dh's collection of shitey old bits of wood and make some "vintage" ladders. It will not matter that no one will actually be able to set foot on these ladders without them collapsing, because they will only be suitable for displaying one's v. expensive big pants on. I will also offer an artisan wall-distressing service . Jeez, I will be quids in.

Blackduck · 09/03/2012 15:10

The words money and old rope come to mind Stropps....
Yes, I am hopeful that dp and I can agree on something - problem is I KNOW he likes the most expensive, whereas I (on paper) am hankering after second cheapest!).

Herbs good baby news - hopefullly, as others have said, it will be all fine.

Blackduck · 09/03/2012 15:11

Stopps, add knackered old wire coat hangers and you are in business ;) here

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/03/2012 15:13

I passionately luff this house and want to move there immediately.

this

It would be hopeless for work, unless I gave up work to write novels and sent DH out to earn what he thinks he is worth.

TheReturnOfStropperella · 09/03/2012 15:15
MrsSchadenfreude · 09/03/2012 15:16

Oh and can you pse sign this petition - this is my favourite place for lunch in London and is an institution. It needs to stay open. Even if it no longer serves Maccabee beer.

Gabys

TheReturnOfStropperella · 09/03/2012 15:17

(See, BD, that last one actually IS money for old rope Grin )

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/03/2012 15:17

Strops, that's kind, but you can't imagine the amount of shit we have already, of our own. Polish pottery, Congolese masks, Romanian wooden shit etc etc

Blackduck · 09/03/2012 15:21

Ponders on who buys this stuff (not your congolese masks MrsS....)......
