Barbour jacket, anyone got this one?

LibertyGrace never spent this much on a jacket before, wondering about sizing...and length. I am a bit bigger than a 10, but smaller than a 12, so not sure which way to go.

Do you want it for fashion, or warmth. If just for fashion go for it 9they come up small) but if you want to keep warm and dry you want a Belstaff

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 11:38

I want it for walking the dog, but am so sick of looking like a complete bedraggled unshapen mess, and keep seeing other people looking so neat and smart in their barbours...They aren't really my style, I don't like the padded type ones on me...but thought this one might suit and be good in all weather, except freezing?

Just looked at Belstaff, no way could afford!

OP posts:
KWL51 · 06/02/2012 11:40

I would go bigger. I am a 12/14 and My barbour jacket is a 14. it is a fitted style though and one of the quilted ones. From experience with the dc coats i find barbour comes up smaller and all three dc coats ahd to be returned for a larger size, it was onyl becasue i borught mine in the regent street store that it didnt need to be returned.

KWL51 · 06/02/2012 11:42

belstaff hugely expensive. The barbour is fine for dog walking etc, mine is for dog walking and watching the ds paly football/rugby.
I went for quilted so it could be machine washed though. they arent waterproof but withstand showers fine.

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 11:43

ok thanks...and do they last forever? worth the money?

OP posts:
KWL51 · 06/02/2012 12:53

ive not had mine very long. ds1 whos 14 had a barbour liddesdale that ds2 has only just outgrown. it still looks as good as new despite being machine washed regularly.
xh is a barbour fan and has an ancient wax jacket that goes off for dry cleaning annually, and still in good condition, must be 20 years old at least.

SparkyTGD · 06/02/2012 13:28

Agree go for size 12. Am 14/16 & needed the 16 when trying on Barbours.

MadameOvary · 06/02/2012 13:38

A bit Hmm at the price. My Barbour parka was £269 and waterproof, hooded with cosy trim and filled with duck down!
I'd want something more substantial if I was spending that much.
(realises I sound like my mother)

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 14:14

Yes MadameOvary I agree...but thought at least I could wear this one almost year round if I wore more stuff under it in the winter...it says it's waterproof...

could just get this from joe browns cheaper option

Forrestgump · 06/02/2012 14:27

thats a lot of money for a coat of that style, (i agree I would want warmth, or at least a removal layer) though i do see barbours as an investment. my Wax barbour Jacket (which like a previous poster said, goes off for 6 weeks every other year to be re waxed) ive had for ever.

washing has faded the cord collar on my daughters. It hasnt worn as well as i had hoped.

KWL51 · 06/02/2012 14:30

the joe browns one will not be waterproof though. plenty of alternatives on Barbour site for less money. I'd say a hood was essential for dog walking in all weathers.

something a bit cheaper and guaranteed waterproof

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 14:45

thanks for links...just don't do shiny coats...and not black either, which is why thought barbour was nice...think it's soo expensive because it's new season...I could wait until it goes on sale. I need something with a bit of waist, that slightly covers my bum, or I won't feel comfortable...do like that north face one, just don't think it would suit me. Does it even matter if you look good while walking your dog? I'm not convinced...

I think that is a great jacket OP. Dh has a few Barbour jackets and tbh they just improve with age - he gets his on ebay, worth a look if cost is a factor.

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 15:10

and they aren't fakes from china valium?

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 06/02/2012 15:13

God no, not fakes. He got a couple in TK max too and flogged them

valiumredhead · 06/02/2012 15:14

If you are worried though, I would absolutely spend that much on a Barbour, he has had one for 10 years and it still looks like it will do at LEAST another 5. Those things are made to last. A couple of hundred quid over 10 years is very good value.

MrsSeanBean · 06/02/2012 15:48

Why not go for a more classic waxed style? Something like this maybe...?
www.barbourbymail.co.uk/Womens-Barbour-Vintage-Beadnell-Waxed-Jacket.html
The waxed ones are warm and waterproof IME, and some can also have warmer liners zipped into them.

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 17:30

MrsSeanBean, I do like that one...just not sure if I'm ready to ACTUALLY look the part!! I did look at it though...just thought the other one had a bit of originality maybe...wish I could go and try them all on.

OP posts:
8oreighty · 06/02/2012 17:30

hmm but no hood on that one, think I need the hood.

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 06/02/2012 18:03

Fear not re the hood issue - most Barbours can have hoods (available separately) attached - see below:

MrsSeanBean · 06/02/2012 18:04

Ooh and just spotted this - worth a try on perhaps?

redglow · 06/02/2012 18:06
